First, I got the room reservation - at the Omni, because the Westin filled up so fast! Then, got the airplane tickets - From Burbank to Pittsburgh, via JFK - and kinda pricey, but gambling on what rates will be on any given day is just that - a gamble. Like trying to convert your currency when entering a new country, it never seems to swing in your favor. But I had to take my time on registering - had to plan vacation time around work and parents who feel neglected. There was a possibility of spending the convention showing my father around AnthroCon, that he might get a better and truer picture of his son - that may still happen, but at the moment is unlikely; and almost had him cheerfully willing to go to Nurnburgh for EF (dad is quite fond of that town), but this year EF is being held in Suhl - so no EF for me, either. Finally - no further hindrances, and baring acts of God or War, the way is clear! I sent my application and fee off on Saturday. Of course, this isn't the ideal way to do it; EARLY pre-registration saves time and effort for both you and the convention, plus gives the convention staff early funds to do all that preparatory work that must be done, all through the year, to make the convention the best affair that it can possibly be - and having some advance idea of how many are coming certainly doesn't hurt, as anyone who has hosted a party or a wedding or any other grand get-together can attest. So - if you are bound-up in uncertanties, like I was, or are just a procrastinator, NOW is the time to act! We're "danger close" here, people! Last date for pre-registrations of any sort is June 15, a little less than two weeks away...and if you think that the USPS can't find a way to make a letter take two weeks to get from one end of the country to the other, well - you don't understand the intricate, tortuous and warped way in which the post office - ANY post office - works! |

This is not to say, of course, that you can't still go if'n you don't make the prereg deadline. You can always show up at the gather at register on the spot; i did, the first year or two that i went, just b/c i couldn't plan far enough ahead.
Since registering on site generally involves about 2 hours' wait to get registered and makes it easier for staff to plan ahead for the crowd, however, i do recommend preregistering if you can. I mean, you meet some interesting folks in line, but you could do that in the prereg line as well, and still get out in less time, thereby freeing you up to go to other, much cooler events. *grin*
