Some of us are taking Amtrak's "Pennsylvanian" line,
which starts in NYC's Penn Station,
passes through Philadephia,
and ends in Pittsburgh.
The 43/44 line, I think, depending on which direction you're going.

So, who's taking that train, and what days are you taking it?

I'm going 7/4 Wed, and returning Sunday.
How about everyone else?
ANYONE else taking it on the fourth?

Me and my companion will be doing the Thursday Sunday trip.

Tip from last year: when the train is leaving Philly it will be PACKED. If you have more than 2 people in your party, don't even bother trying looking for seating together, you won't find it. Take whatever single seat you can find and sit down so train can get out of station on time. Train was late leaving last year due to people trying to sit big parties together and thus constantly blocking the aisle while looking for 4 seats together. THERE AREN'T ANY.

You'll be able to get up and change seat after about one to two stops. Just plan on sitting apart for about half hour or so. Once some of the local travelers get off, you'll be able to find 3-4 seats together again.

Leaving Thursday, returning Monday.

Hoping not to miss either this year--last time it was corridor train to DC then Capitol Ltd. to Pittsburgh.

(Mental note: the subway moves faster than rush-hour traffic.)

Remember you can nap on the train, and it's a 9 to 11-hour trip, depending on the other trains using the same tracks. So you can get up early and try to make up the difference on the trip.

I made the same conclusion last year, and took the subway to Penn Station rather than sit in a cab stuck in rush-hour traffic. Actually, I had the foresight to ride back a bit to an earlier subway stop to get a seat. This year, I expect to go further back, possibly to the beginning of the route, just to make sure.

Since I'm leaving Wed, I hope to make up Thursday for socializing so I don't have to just charge into the con schedule. Smiling

On the way back, I will definitely sleep at least 1/2 the return trip, catching up from the con. Naps here and there will forestall that, but since I need to, and the train is so comfortable, I consider that a win-win proposition. Now if I can nap on the way TO Pittsburgh, then I'm golden...

Oops.

Missed my train. by a w i d e margin. Exchanged my outbound ticket, trying again Friday morning. Now I wish I was selling something, seeing as I'm $155 in the hole and didn't make it out of NY.
