Just a topic for talking of the many volunteering opportunities at AC. I also created this cus I was hoping to find info on opportunities on July 4th. I figure there are a lot of new attendees who want an opportunity to volunteer and if some of us veteran attendees will be willing to share these opportunities with em, Im sure they will have lots of fun. its been a proven fact that volunteering is one of the best ways to socialize with lots of other furs and meet new people at the con. You can also get a sneak peek at the layout of the con center before the majority of the attendees get in, so its a win/win situation. Not to mention you get stuff for volunteering.

Here are the general opportunities that I know of.

Wednesday: No clue whatsoever. heard there was some bag stuffing and Tshirt folding done on the day before as prep work. I also hear there is gonna be some opportunities for folks around Philly to volunteer and get in some extra hours loading trucks with con stuff.

Thursday: Registration(regular, sponsorship reg, and prereg), Tshirt folding, assistance to dealer room setup(small stuff cus the union has to do all other technical and heavy lifting), last minute con bag stuffing, and Door guards(there are a few opportunites in which the Dorsai wont have enough people and a few volunteers have occasionally put to use, especially in guiding lines around registration tables).

Friday through Sunday: Registration(all three types will slowly get combined into one registration table as the day goes by and the crowds and lines get smaller), Door guards(there are a few opportunites in which the Dorsai wont have enough people and a few volunteers have occasionally put to use, especially in guiding lines around registration tables), and also there is assistance for the different panels offered at AC.

AND, thats all I know of. Have never gotten into anything else as the other stuff got taken up by the Union peoples. I suppose as the con builds in size they will need volunteers for other odd jobs, but in the mean time, there aint much else to volunteer for. Not that im complaining bout the union peoples though. MAN was it tough to load a truck with those steel pipes. Especially when the service elevator to the loading dock goes screwy on us. I remember that happening at least once at one of the previous hotels. Very thankful for their help we are. Sticking out tongue

Back to the topic, Yes, if you know of opportunities to volunteer, go ahead and post em here. There are a lot of new furs out there who want to give the program a chance and see some new things. Volunteering is one of the best ways out there to accomplish this.

Just on a side note, I think registration is worth double hours at certain times of the day(particularly the morning till around 2 or 3 PM. I cant exactly recall what else is worth double.

bah, linking people is too easy. *ducks your rolled up newspaper*

Besides, I wanted to give people an opportunity to share their good experiences with volunteering. Lots of good things usually happen for those of us who give our time to the con.

Giza's list includes art show workers, thankfully. In addition to what it covers, the art show staff often also need help finishing up setup of the space.

Last year, the union folk put together the steel frames and hung the peg board. They didn't secure the peg board at the bottom, however, and some of the peg boards ended up pretty crooked or overlapped in their haste. Numbers also have to be affixed to the boards to tell folks where their space is, and two different artist file systems have to be combined/cross-referenced, to create a single packet for each artist or artist representative. The information about this work generally goes out in the artsist registration packets, but i can't imagine petercat objecting to having other folks help as well--he just needs to have advance commitment, so he can tell the dorsai who's coming.

As volunteer jobs go, also, i do recommend working with the art show in general. They're often short on folks to do bag check and door monitor, the staff are a wonderful group, and you get to meet other folks as they come to the art show as well. The only challenge is that once i start working, i often lose track of time and spend so much time there that i don't go on break until it's late afternoon and i'm starving.

meh, tis why this year im bringing a fanny pack full of granola bars and that fitness water stuff for survival purposes. Its better than stopping my volunteer hours to run and find a place that can feed me and it keeps me from spending a fortune on food. Keeps my hunger in check and in the past Ive found its a good way to keep down body fat and control your eating habits.

Not a bad thought.

Doesn't generally work for art show help, tho--ppl get nervous when you bring food too close to art for sale, though we bend the rules some for the reception.
