Why would ice be full of chemicals? o.O

It's nothing more than frozen H2O. Perfectly safe for human (or reptilian) consumption.

Well, I don't think it has chemicals, but the ice machines are made by Soylent Greens.

Just checking, because the ice machines that make ice for the case's at work (seafood, meat dept etc) have somthing in it, cant remember what, but we've been told, 'sure, it can be used for your coolers, just dont put it in your drinks'

That makes sense, they probably put something in it to make it stay colder, or thaw slower, or sterilize it, or something. But, ice machines in hotels, restaurants, grocery stores, and other places are generally meant for human consumption, so you'll always be fine there.

Actually by law you can't put anything but tap water into publicly available ice machine but tap water. So if you don't have a problem with the tab water, you won't have probably with the ice.

Assuming the hotel is following the law about cleaning their machines on schedule.

I heard they used Hydric acid in those ice machines.

yup. Ice machines are notorious for using Hydric Acid, which is quite lethal in high doses, a major component in Acid Rain, used as coolant in Nuclear Power plants, it contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape, it's used as a fire retardant, accelerates corrosion in metals, can cause major tissue damage in its solid form, and can be found in the excised tumors of cancer patients!

What he said.

It can also cause very serious burns if handled improperly. More info can be found here.

Yes it can. My ice machine here at home has been adding more and more Hydric Acid to my ice

Pittburgh's water is both chlorinated and fluoridated. In general these don't bother most people in the concentrations in the water. Like any chemical however, there are some rare people that will be disturbed by it. If you're from an area with neither, you may notice a slight off taste.

The ice machines may or may not have water filters on them to take the chlorine back out.

Not sure what chemical they could possibly be dumping in your machine at work, but it may not be chemicals at all. Many machines don't get cleaned as often as they should and thus are full of bacteria. If you're working in the meat department, this is especially likely as you're handling raw meat and handling ice. People have a chance to taint the ice every time they get more. its fine for meat and fish since people will be cooking that. If you're going to eat the ice though...

Machines often don't cleaned as often as they should because it requires shutting them down to do it. Businesses that need ice constantly (24 hour places especially) are most likely to skip maintenance.

The hotels should be cleaning their ice machines on a nice regular schedule. They have multiples, so shutting one down to clean it isn't a big deal. Just be wary of some of the fast food places and bars. Due to their high volume, they're less likely to clean the machines. If the machines doesn't look like it's been cleaned anytime recently, skip ice in your drinks. You'll be meeting enough new and interesting germs already.

I had no problem with the ice last year. The only difference is that the water doesn't come from Lake Ontario. Either way it's very safe to use in drinks.

well.... >.> a couple things

a) if you make your own ice, don't get it out of the river
b) the only chemicles within the ice machine is a brain control chemicmal...so if you are going to drink it, remember: Freezer grade tinfoil, round into conic shape with taipered point slightly bent to the left, and shiny side out. MUST be shiny side out!

so other then those 2 points your safe.

i would think that the difference between ice machines made for cold storage and packaging use different methods and chemicles then ice machienes used for concumption/ingestion (pardon my spelling it's been off for a while now :\ )

soo if your ok with abit of floride you should be fine! just think of getting ice out of a giant ice box and your fine Smiling

I think there must be something dangerous in the ice machines, because the last time I was in Pittsburgh, people started growing tails, and had taken to wearing unusual costumes to make themselves look like furry animals.

Be afraid! BE VERY AFRAID!
