Dealers Wandering Off

Hey guys, I have a small question. I read through most of the site, the dealer's den packet and helpful info pages, and looked through what I could on the forum, but I haven't found the answer to this question. This will be my first time at AC, first time in the dealer's den, and also my first time suitting. So pretty much, I'll be a newb to just about evverryyttthiiing. What I'd like to know is, can dealers leave their tables to engage in AC events? I didn't see too many events that I just HAD to be in, but I would like to participate in things like the parade and such. I know that lasts only an hour or so. I don't like the idea of being away from my table, since that means I could be passing up potential customers, but there are a couple events that look like fun that I would like to experience while I'm there. I just wasn't sure if there was a policy on that or not. I know artists in the alley aren't allowed to leave their tables for more than is necessary to eat, drink, and...ya know. Otherwise they'd lose their tables. But seeing as I paid for mine, does that mean I could technically come and go as I pleased? Just wanted to check and see. Sorry if this answer is listed at, oh, I dunno, the TOP of the page or something obvious. Thanks guys! |

I think you will need a sheet to cover your table, and goods for sale while you are away.

This is a surprisingly common question this year, and I'm startled we didn't document it better!
Oh defintely--you are more than entitled to leave your table at any time you see fit, for whatever reasons. We actually encourage dealers to spend some time wandering about, seeing panels, participating in events, and basically sampling the convention itself. The room is monitored by security during all operating hours; we suggest that if you're completely gone for any long period of time you at the very least cover your table with a sheet (which, please not, we cannot provide!) and note that you are gone for a spell.
If so inclined, you can also have someone monitor your table for you while you're gone; so long as they've been approved by you, we don't mind someone sitting about and minding the store, as it were. You can even continue selling your goods while not in, though taxes are still your personal responsibility.
We could certainly not tell our dealers to sit on their bums for three straight days, as we're putting on the convention for you blokes as well, and we want you to get out there and enjoy!

permalinkIs it really? Wow, I guess other folks were having trouble finding the answer to it as well! I'm glad I asked here. :3
And that's awesome! I didn't think we'd be restricted, but I wanted to be sure I didn't return from an event just to find my stuff sitting out beside the convention doors or something. Now that I know that, I'll need to review the program schedule and see if there's anything else I'd like to hit up.
Thanks Foxish!

permalinkWe in Security to patrol the dealer's room while it is open, and while we can't assign someone to watch your table in particular, we do watch for obviously closed dealer's and will challenge people who are poking around them too enthusiastically.

permalinkI know a lot of experienced dealers that are tired of spending the entire con chained to their tables, and want to actually enjoy some of the elements of the con for once.

We ask dealers who wander off kindly not to wander too far to the north, lest they fall into the river.

I can't say much about the "cool"--this is Pittsburg in the throes of July after all--but I must admit, there is a high quantity of "down"!
