Ok IM in the military and I plan to go to the con in 2008. Out of personal experience what was it like? Is it wise to go alone? When we "suit up", can we talk or would that be the reason to have a spotter? How long does it generally take to make a fursuit? How much moolah(money....)should I bring to the con? There are many hotels close by right? I know the con usually lasts 3 days, how long will each day generally last? After we suit up, we must stay suited up throughout the duration of the day? Without worrying about money, how much would you spend on making a fursuit? Do we suit up at the convention center or when we are at the hotel ahead of time? Do we need to drive back and forth from the center to our hotels?Or is it walking distance? These are it I have more but its a little too early to ask them. |

This was my first con ever-I absolutely loved it. Everyone is really friendly and the con seemed to go smoothly.
I went alone, but I met up with friends there. Trust me, you'll make friends.
You can talk, of course, but the reason to have a spotter is to asist you in not running people over.
This is something I do not know.
I went thru approx. $450. This included parking, food, registration, and stuff I bought. I was able to crash with a friend, so if you need a hotel room, you'll go thru a bit more.
There are several hotels close, however STAY AT THE WESTIN. You can go straight from the hotel to the convention center without going outside (unless you want to-I personally don't recommend it because it DID rain and it WAS quite humid).
LOL the days began right around 10am-ish and went to 2am +. You can crash whenever you want, tho.
You can go back to the hotel and "unsuit". But there is the headless lounge where you can take off your head and/or suit and cool down. I don't recommend leaving the suit in the room tho, because accidents CAN happen.
Um, I would spend quite a bit on a suit, but that's because I know what I want and it would cost me quite a bit lol.
Suit at the hotel. Easier than carrying your suit.
Again, stay at the Westin. Save yourself a lot of trouble.
If you go to the FAQ's, these are actually answered there, along with a bunch of others. Uncle Kage is really good with his FAQ's. Hope to see you next year! Look for me-I'm one of the few skunks ^^

(Sorta lazy as well,Didnt want to read through all that.I like havin my questions directly answered)>.<
(Havin a spotter.....Is it that difficult walkin around in a fursuit?Or maybe its because it has alot of blind spots?)
Anyway......Thank you and hope to see you in the next con

it really depends on what you want, how much of a demand there is for said item, and how old it is (Is it out of print?). Generally, comics I bought ran about $5-$8, but some were older and out of print that were up to about $20. Art/comission-wise, the average price for a basic sketch was like $10-$15, Ink $20-30, and colored $30-40. There were some which were up there, (I got a colored commission from Flatrat for $50.) It also depends on if the person you are buying from is a big name artist or not because that could be a factor as well, as the bigger name artists can really run up their commission prices. I went out there with $400 spending money (After hotel and transportation) and I have $60 left after a sizable haul from the dealer's den/artist alley.

Which branch?
Im gonna be in Deleware for the next 2 years.Yet I dont know if I would be deployed or not, from there ......Hopefully not anytime soon.
But if I do stay I plan to request leave and then have a blast at anthrocon!! ^o^
(Just need to make the perfect fur suit for me or if not then just buy one and acessorize it my own way)
I would hate to go alone so I propose that we keep in touch via email(VegaCaptain@yahoo.com);And once Anthrocon comes along we will meet up and have a fun chat talking about our wonderous adventures through boot camp....maybe.... (>,<)
Where are you gonna be next year?
Did you make a suit?

I'll be 100% honest-I'm not comfortable with the idea of a complete suit. Just because I tend to get overheated fairly easily and I like not passing out.
I bought a tail, which I am vamping at home, and a set of ears. I'm going to expand to include a "costume" of sorts.
I loved AC. I did NOT run 10am-2am. I pulled my happy butt out of bed around 10ish, dragged it down to breakfast and then to the con no later than 12pm. I was in bed around 11ish every night. I'm not normally an early riser, but walking so much did it lol.

So you have been in a suit?Or did you see others sweatin a river?
I mean,How hot can it get inside the suit?
.....But unlike you I would gladly pull my happy butt out of bed early and leave very late(or early again since it ends at 2 am ^0^)

From what i hear...very. Don't underestimate it.
If you imagine wandering around your house in a full-body snow suit plus warm heavy hat, gloves, and boots for a few hours...well, it's not unlike that. And that's assuming you stay inside.
Our staff work with the building staff to keep the building as cool as they reasonably can, the fursuit events and spaces especially, but it can still be pretty warm for fursuiters. It seems like every year there's one who isn't vigilant enough about dehydration and overheating and just keels over.
I don't know of any furs who keep their fursuits on for a full day nonstop, though there may be a few; i think the vast majority wear their suits for a few hours then switch back into street clothes to rest and let the suit air out.
Of course, it's worth noting that i don't fursuit, so i'm most certainly talking out my rump here.

Thanks for the info....and description O.o
Ill be sure to gt the proper disenfectants for my suit.
I might try out that ice vest or just get myself a camel pack(small backpack water dispenser, heck its small enough to wear in the fursuit)
I want to wear that suit for as long as I can cause after this anthrocon I dont know if Im gonna be deployed or not in 2009

I'm in the army. I got extended in baghdad for the duration of anthrocon but i get out as soon as we redeploy so nothing will be preventing me from going next year. I have a suit i bought still have'nt seen it in real life yet ( Kinda worries me)but it scared the hell out if my mom she opened the box and the head was on top stareing at her. but i don't want to go alone either so my address is

That would be pretty funny.......
unexpectedly your mom opens the box and just freaks outs,
yea I could see that happenin.
Your suit....
Is it a wolf?
Where did you buy it? Cause I dont think I have the craftsman ability to create my own fursuit.
(But I could atleast draw my dream suit)
I hope that suit fits well and looks decent;that would worry me too.

Well, I've never been in a suit, but I was hugging people and they were HOT. You could feel the heat radiating off of them. Granted the hotal and con center were cool, but still.
I spent alot of my moola on prints, which ran anywhere from $7-10 dollars (I got about 8 prints). Had someone do a badge for me, $25. Had someone do some artwork for me, $15. Plus tail $40. ears $12....yeah I spent a CRAPLOAD.
LOL And I had a very specific reason why I didn't drag my happy butt downstairs until late. ^^ But I'm not gonna get into that lol.

Since other people skipped mentioning it, there are some "fursuit floors" at the Westin. If you're a suitor, definitely get a room at Westin and request those floors. They're basically the lower floors to minimize the amount of transit time where you'll be in elevator and are low enough that you may be able to take stairs if you're in reasonably good condition.
Side note, you will climb a LOT of stairs at the con. Suit or no suit, you'll be up and down stairs a lot more than most people are used to. For the weeks leading up to con, take the stairs at work as often as possible, otherwise you may have really sore calves by the end. I take my dog on a several mile hike everyday but I don't live anywhere with stairs so after several days of up and down stairs, it starts to wear on you.

But it shouldnt be a problem Im in good condition
(Besides Id be havin too much fun to care)
Anyway, do I have to claim them ahead of time?
And they will know what Im talkin about right?

Stairs just tend to work a different set of muscles than most people get running or marching on flat, so even those in good shape can have sore calves at the end.
Yes, you do need to request the fursuit floor ahead of time. The spaces fill up flat. There were 353 fursuitor in parade this year, so that fills up that area FAST.
Put it in as a special request when you make the reservation. They'll announce on website later in the year if they're doing fursuit floors again when they put up the info on booking rooms in the con block. it'll be a bit before they have the 2008 info up. They're still recovering from this con!

permalinkKeep in mind the 2007 messageboard will be deleted to make way for the 2008 messageboard any day now. (Note the other sections already vanished.) So save the good answers for later.
Ok, then, answering in order:
Lots of fun.
Much hanging out with friends, and many, many things on the schedule.
You can download schedule PDFs here:
http://www.anthrocon.org/schedule
The pocket guide is the schedule, the program guide explains each event.
If you look at the "non-fur reviews of Anthrocon" thread
http://www.anthrocon.org/node/1353
and click all of the Mark Evanier links,
you'll get a detailed look from a non-furry.
Unless you have someone travelling with you, you'll travel alone. I've done that each time and done fine. Follow normal precautions for travelling by car, plain, train or bus. Once on the con "grounds", security is EVERYWHERE. It is wise to go OFF con "grounds" with friends, so make some friends there for lunch, or meet some there like we did.
in Summer. If you want one, best to direct questions in the "fursuiter" forum once the new board is up.
Some fursuiters don't speak in fursuit and use hand-signals.
"Spotters" SPOT for you. They see what you can't, and protect you from the people who would love to run up and hug a person who has no peripheral vision and get knocked over. They also are there in case you forgot to take in fluids and cool off, and keep you from passing out. They help you through crowds.
It's strongly recommended that the main or overflow hotel be used. AC gets a low rate because we guarantee filling rooms, and so we need to fill the rooms. That means the Westin and the Omni William Penn. There's a Courtyard by Marriott across the street from the Westin with reasonable prices as well, if the convention blocks are full and can't be expanded further. As far as I know, we've not completely filled the Courtyard plus both blocks yet.
And the blocks fill up many months early. So keep checking in.
Check the schedule that's online!
Events usually start no earlier than a few at 10am, if any. Most will pick up by Noon. (Fri, Sat, Sun. Thu evening, there's a few light social events.) By 11pm, events tend to begin thinning out. AFAIK, 2am is when just about everything has to stop.
If you've got brains, you'll get out before you collapse. If you lack brains, you will collapse and the paramedics will cut the suit off you. Either way, you won't be in the suit for more than a few hours.
Since I worry about money, I spend $0 on a suit.
If you really want, you can arrive in a fursuit, but I would wait until I was in the Westin, and suit up in my hotel room.
The Westin is the main hotel. It's across the street from the convention center. The Omni is a short walk away. The Courtyard is across the other street from the convention center.

Well I found out today that even though Im still unskilled in my job(even though its unlikely) I could still be deployed somewhere. Id say 50/50 chance
I just hope I can make it to Anthrocon.
But I still plan to get my suit. I have commissioned someone to do it for me. -Silver from Furrhappens.com-
Lokks like good quality and the price is better then other places that I found.

permalinkHey Vega guy. Your first con experience is going to be overwhelming. It's best for Anthrocon to go ahead and plan to get your hotel from Wednesday-Monday in the Westin or Courtyard Marriot(across the street and vending). Wednesday night and Thursday are sort of meet and greet and informal gatherings. When you get your event schedule, highlight all the panels you'll want to attend. Of course go to "So This Is Your First Furry Con". That will keep you busy enough. Also before the con, talk to some others online who will be there and plan on meeting up with them. When you first get there, you'll have this sense of "OMG, What am I doing here, I feel like I don't belong". By Monday morning you'll break down in tears and not want to leave what feels like family. By yourself, hotel will be around 700 and be sure to get the SuperSponser. It's only $90 more than a regular registration and you get so many benefits that it easily makes up for the extra money that you would spend on stuff anyway. Free con Tshirt. Free artwork by the GOH. Free finger food, soda and water in the con suite. Free upscale luncheon with the GOH. Front row seating at the major events. Not only that, but you'll help to support an event that is there for you and in your interest. If you're worried about the cost then shave the Wednesday night stay from your itenerary and that pays for the upgrade and you don't sacrifice much. You could still get there Wednesday night/Thursday early morning. The hotel let me check in at 11AM to my room. I'm really surprised that out of nearly 3,000 attendees that only 202 people got the supersponsorship. We don't need more attendees to earn the bigger halls, that are much closer to the hotel we just need more supersponsors to help to purchase them.
As far as fursuits go, there is no rule for what you have to do. You can talk in them if you like if you feel that's what your character would do. A fursuit is for YOUR enjoyment. Being in a fursuit is torture, but the fun you get out of it by playing an endless game of charades and getting many, many scritches and hugs more than makes up for it. You could even be in the middle of doing fursuit games and have to leave if you feel too hot.
I hope I didn't overwhelm you with information. Don't be nervous about going. The con is there for YOU to be yourself and have fun.

Depending on how much money I save( I still need to buy the fursuit) will depend if I get supersponsorship.

permalinkNot just fursuiters. When an event says fursuit, it means that it is encouraged to suit up so that everyone can see your suit and know who you are. This year, only about 15% of attendendees even had a fursuit which is way up from 8% last year.
And yeah, watching all the videos makes me wish I was back there.

I hate some of these videos on youtube.
people keep giving Furries a bad name.
All they(documentaries) ever talk about is the furries who take it too far.
(personal opinion)
I love Furries as much as any other guy but Some other guys go over the line and go into extremes.(I wont get into details)
Some things are just wrong and kinda wierd to me.
But again that is just my personal view of things.
I find Furry Fandom just a way to act and be what your heart desires through fursuits(or no fursuit).
I just find it fun and interesting and thats all.
Sorry bout that but I had to get that off my chest somehow. It was really bugging me.

Not normally. They're new.
They're "Special". Make sure to say "special" in the proper tone of voice that implies the quotes.
The Geek Hierarchy may help explain all this:

The furries just tend to be the favorite target for other groups of people that got given wedgies in high school. Though I'm not sure how one tries to give a wedgie to a werewolf...

lol, I agree with fenrislorsrai. The protestors that were outside AC07 were so horribly sad. Holding up stupid signs (were only 2 of them anyways LMAO), getting hugs from our fursuiters (mass hugs), then they got kicked off the hotel property. And then kicked off the property across the street.
I felt bad for them, because they obviously didn't know what we're all about.

I was a nerdy teenager and remember reading Star Trek novels with furries in 'em. Those were awesome!
