Anyone who attended the Closing Ceremony knows that Uncle Kage announced one of the GOH's for Anthrocon 2008: Floyd Norman, an African-American that was an important animator with Walt Disney in the 50s and 60s, and continued to do storywork for Disney and later Pixar into this decade. He is also one of the more prominent voices that decries the cheapening of animation.

Uncle Kage stated that Norman is a very modest man, and bristled at the idea of being a "Guest of Honor", so he is officially referring to Norman as the "Guest of O.K."

However, there is one note I want to make. Uncle Kage mentioned that he is, like, 81 years old. However, I looked him up, and according to IMDb he is actually 71. His listed birth year is 1936.

That made me breathe a huge sigh of relief. I mean, if he's 81, I was scared he may not live to next Anthrocon. Now I'm fairly confident we will indeed see him next year.

While I understand that we're reading words on a screen, that is a human being you're talking about.

Mr. Norman will no doubt have some very interesting stories to share with us. I can't wait Smiling

He decries the cheapening of animation? Well I certainly must meet him! That very thing was a major impetus for me in starting my own independent animation company.

Animation is an art form and should be treated as such... although given what is considered 'art' these days (rolling nekkid on a canvas after covering yourself in paint), perhaps staying away from from the popular culture would be a good thing. Sticking out tongue

But yes, most animation made in the States these days is pretty poorly made, though I seem to see a reversing of that slowly starting up here and there. Writing is the big thing. Without good writing it doesn't matter how pretty the pictures are. That's why Pixar's been kicking ass and Disney had to go crawling to them and beg them to come back. They have the best CG possible and clever stories to boot.

John Lasseter likes anime and wouldn't have ripped off "Kimba". Nuff said. Eye-wink
