I already told the westin about this issue this morning, but I figured I'd post this here as well.
Several of the room number placards on the 17th floor (including my room's) were vandalized between Sunday night and Monday morning.
To whomever was doing this. You're not being funny, you're not being cute, you're not being a badass. You're being a schmuck plain and simple. Why someone would ever think this would ever be acceptable, at a convention no less, is beyond me. The hotel does indeed like us, except when crap like this happens. Then it comes out of their pockets to fix the mess because someone had to get their jollies breaking other peoples property.
I do hope that whoever did this is caught and they are banned not only from the hotel but also the convention at large.
Unless they bill Anthrocon, in which case it comes out of Anthrocon's pockets - you know, the funds to pay for your convention.
And Namrepus, knowing Kage's tolerance level for this kind of behavior, about the best they could hope for would to be banned from Anthrocon. Other alternatives are... messy.
Anthrocon will indeed be charged for the repairs. And our relationship with the hotel is damaged just a tiny bit more.
I sincerely wish I could be around when this sort of thing goes on just so I could personally deliver the offender to you and the Sheriff. I'll put my feelers out and see if I can find out any info, people for whatever reason like to report things to me.
Is the following feasible/worth pursuing?
1. Find out everybody who was on the 17th floor.
2. Ask them individually whether they know who might have done this, starting with those in the undamaged rooms.
This assumes that (1) the perp was staying on that floor and not picking one at random to be an a**hole on and (2) his roomies are willing to do the right thing and turn him in.
I don't think legally they can do this without getting a warrant. Of cource I'm not a lawyer so I don't know.
However, I do think that someone will screw up somewhere. One of the numbers or pieces of them will turn up under a bed or in a drawer or someone will brag about it on facebook/twitter/FA/DA/etc/ and you simply go from there.
Actually as a non governmental entity and a voluntary association, Anthrocon is not bound by the 4th amendment for the purpose of reasonable questions. Anyone who has any information on this should be happy to come forward however, because it's the right thing to do personally, and for the community.
Right. But the Westin are the ones who would have the lists to those who were registered in those rooms. And they are under no obligation to my knowledge, contractual or other wise, to turn over who was registered to those rooms for any reason except to police with a warrant.
Not to mention. If the person who did it was someone who was simply visiting the floor and their friends had no knowledge of them doing it. Then there is a dead end.
That's a shame.
Somebody, somewhere had to have seen it. People don't usually go around doing this kind of thing alone.
If it will help, My roommates and I heard some commotion in the hallways arround 11:00 or so last night before we went to bed.
I was on the 17th floor (1717). I don't recall seeing the vandalism, but I wasn't paying attention, either. What kind of vandalism was it and on which rooms?
I was in 1719. The glass and plastic placards that had the room numbers on them had their numbers removed some how by force.
My room had the 9 removed I think. I know that 1718 had everything BUT the 8 removed.
Wow. That's not even "fun"vandalism (where there's artistic merit). That's just being a dick.
I texted my friends to see if they saw anything. There was 5 of us and we congregated into my room that night (some of you may have heard us). I don't think it was any of them. I was with them the whole time, and they aren't assholes who would do something like this anyway. I hope this is rectified!
EDIT: One of my friends said he saw a room with a missing number. But it was near the elevators and he wasn't sure if it was on my floor. He did say that there was a "2" involved somehow, though.
EDIT 2: My friend said it might have been one of the rooms near me. It was before we got to them though. I think it was around 11 when we got in. But it could have been a little later too. Don't know if that helps.
This happened to us last year. Our room number plate was ripped off the wall. We reported it right away, and the Westin staff still tried to charge us for it, even if we didn't touch it. Thank goodness Uncle Kage stepped in and told us it would be alright. But the convention shouldn't have to cover this sort of thing, it just shouldn't be happening. Shame on anyone who thinks that's a fun and good idea.
We should make a pool to offset the cost. You're right. Can Kage get us a dollar figure? I'd donate to the fund. Even though I wasn't involved, we really shouldn't let this come out of anthrocon's pocketbook.
I sent a PM to Unclekage asking if he would like this and if he could get us an idea on the dollar amount it would cost. I definitely will get this going when he responds!
Well let's not forget that this might've occured on other floors as well, signifigantly costing more than only a few rooms but many many rooms over many floors.
I'm fully aware. But crowdfunding can get a lot if people are willing (I know we just spent a ton on the con, but it doesn't mean everyone's totally broke). But even if it lightens the cost a bit, it might be worth it.
I agree with Pamiirug.. I would also be willing to donate.. but I hope they are found and charged for the damage.
how could someone think this would be funny??
I'm sure Kage already has people dealing with it/planning to make sure it happens less in the future. Just don't turn it into a witch hunt.
i hope they r caught and unclekage well let us do the donation thing that wold be a real help to anthrocon. as for next year this may sound silly of me but i plan on investing in a nany cam so i can have it stuck im my window just in case any thing like that happens to my room cause they would be caught on tape.
Whether or not they're caught, I just want to help fix this and hope that it doesn't happen again. I'm sure Kage would be glad for our help to pay. I just have no idea how much repairs would cost for this (even in a ballpark range) so I asked, partly to let him know so they can get the donations, and partly because i want to set it up without asking too little or too much money.
This is my first chance to read up on what everyone had to say about the convention, reliving in my mind what it was like for me while imagining what others enjoyed at the con' by reading their experiences in their own words.....then, I read this.
I really don't know what to say, but I'll try my best to put into words on some of my thoughts. What the general talk about this that I'm reading is on the who may have done this, what it will costs and where the money will come from to pay for the damages. No matter how any of the questions are answered or how this gets resolved, it will never change one thing, and for me the most important one I think everyone should remember....it will never change the simple fact that it happened.
Uncle Kage said.. "And our relationship with the hotel is damaged just a tiny bit more." and for me being in my first Anthrocon Convention (well, the first furry con' of any kind for me, really) I just don't know the history of what other things that happened in the past, both what has been openedly talked about or may have been kept quiet because that was for the best. So I really don't have a clear understanding on how bad this "damage" may be.
This was my first Anthrocon, my first stay at the Westin and my first time in Pittsburgh since 1989. I have nothing but kind words to say about how the Convention was run, the facilities of both the David L. Lawrence Convention Center and the Westin Hotel along with the volunteers who helped with the convention and the staff of both the DLCC and Westin.
I was on the 19th floor in the Westin (room 1915) and two floors above where the vandalism occured on the 17th, so I had no idea about this until I read the thread. Now I understand that staff at the Westin does read this site and what is posted here, so I like to say to them the following...
I am very sorry to hear that something like this has occurred. From everything that I've learned about Anthrocon, you the Westin, the DLCC, all the other Hotels and the city of Pittsburgh have always welcomed the Furry Community with open arms when the convention comes to your town, so I'm sure you would never take the actions of a few to judge the furry community as a whole beacuse of this. I hurts me to hear when things like this ever happen.
I like to say to the Westin, for both myself and my group is we thoroughly enjoyed your hospitality during our stay, your very helpful staff and look forward to being with you during next years convention.....Thank You!
I wish it was possible to "Like" comments on here.
Also in reference to the above thread I too would like to contribute to repairing the damage as the Westin has always taken great care of me over the many Anthrocons I've attended, especially this year when "Passkey" didn't inform them of my date change in March and they thought I was a no-show. They found me a room day one of Anthrocon even though it wasn't their mistake that I lost mine. I even got to personally meet Kelly Pry finally this year and she was incredibly nice to me, and remembered me from previous years where I'd booked a suite.
Great people who don't deserve what they have to put up with from that tiny subset of this fandom which inexplicably wishes to tear down the best of what we have. I would love any additional opportunity to show them that the majority of furries are decent folk by helping to pay for the damage our few miscreants have caused.
You can "like" comments. Just vote five stars!
My friends and I made sure we tried to make the housekeeping ladies lives as easy as possible by cleaning up our room to the best of our abilities whenever possible. And yes, we did tip the girls as well. The staff at the hotel did so much for me this weekend, it wasn't funny. From the 2 clerks who helped with getting into my room early and resolving an issue with the keys as well, to the doorman who helped me with all the stuff I was bringing in to the hotel when he saw I was struggling to juggle it all. Every time I have ever stayed at that hotel, it's been an enjoyable experience.
Frankly, I can go on about how the local anime con has been effectively banned from the Westin because of this kinda crap, but I won't. The point of that is moot right now. I, for one, do not ever wanna see AC befall that same fate because some moron thought it would be funny.
I would hope that others wouldn't want that to happen as well.
To put it grossly, most attendees would be very happy to kick these morons' testicles up to the level of their tonsils... and to have them banned from Anthrocon for life. Unfortunately, Anthrocon will only do the second.
This makes me so sad. The furry community is one of the most warm and welcoming communities I've ever met. It's such a shame that just one or two people can cause so much trouble for everyone else.
I was up on the 12th floor, but I left Sunday, so unfortunately I couldn't witness anything.
I would be happy to contribute a little towards the repairs. It's the least I can do for the pleasure I had meeting you all.
I still haven't heard yet from UncleKage. I'm sure he's busy so I won't expect a response any time terribly soon, so I'm thinking of just setting up the fund for donations right now and leave it as open-ended as possible. The site linked above does require a target amount for the "tipping point", however. I'd like to solicit suggestions for what amount I should put there. When UncleKage gets in touch, I'll update accordingly (hopefully that should work fine).
What do people suggest? I'm going to start it at $500 and go from there. I can edit it later, however. I'll post a link to the campaign in a new thread.
EDIT: Here's the forum post with a link to the campaign: https://www.anthrocon.org/node/13853/starting-fund-contribute-damage-repair-westin-during-anthrocon-2013
1708 reporting in, count us out of list of suspected rooms. Was just wife and myself at the con on honymoon. I did not notice any vandalism but I was not personally looking for something like that too. Wish I saw who though because I would love to have beat them to death with my squeaky ball.... Hmm, how embarrising would that be.... "I got my ass kicked by a squeaky toy."
On a side note, how did the chandelier accident turn out. I was one of the ones helping with making a parimeter to keep furs away from the broken glass at the dead dog...
Oof, that doesn't sound like a fun accident. Hope there weren't any injuries!
This is not a witch hunt. There is no list of suspected rooms.
Yeah, I'd like to mention that I don't intend to, or endorse any witch-hunt type of things, myself. That's not our responsibility. That's partially why I set up the campaign. I feel like it's a more constructive response.
Ehh it was an innocent accident. I was dancing with my mate facing them when it happened. They were tossing and rolling a blown up ball amongst fursuiters. The ball bounced blindly off one of their noses and decided it wanted to go up... Well... up was the direction of the nice chandelier with hanging glass. I think only one fell and broke and only thing I think was hurt was pride as it was a very innocent accident not even from rough play. We quickly set up a parimeter and staff was called to clean it. They pulled a wall across making the room a little smaller.
No doubt that it was innocent. These things happen. Glad it was contained and no one was hurt!
Doesn't the Westin have security cameras for the floors? o-o I see them on the 2nd and 3rd floors (Most obvious one is when you're going up the escalator from the 1st and 2nd floor there's the one above the mirrors on the left).
I roomed on floor 17 of the westin (Was 1716). I had 3 others with me but 2 left Sunday at 1pm, and the other left at 6AM. I had left around 11:15AM Monday and had hung out around the elevators waiting for one with a few others, before deciding to take the stairs since I wanted to checkout before 12PM.
At the time, room service were walking about up there and one gentlemen had managed to catch me before I was leaving since I had left my phone charger in the room and gave it to me. So the vandilization might have occured after 11:45AMish.
How were the signs vandalized cause I didn't see anything at the time. o-o
XD OMG I remember you!!! I was with the girl there when the elevators went into service mode. Glad you made it down the steps okay with all that stuff. I wound up doing the same too after NON of the elevators had any room what-so-ever.
I checked out and made my statement to the westin at 9:10 according to my emailed reciept. So to say it happened after 11:45 is incorrect.
Then they must have been fixed up before I exited my room because I do not recall seeing anything vandalized in my hall on the 17th floor.
Room service was present too, but they were cleaning rooms.
Unless and until the guilty party is identified, we can't be sure it was an Anthrocon attendee. Some years ago, another major furry convention had the fire alarm go off for about 3-4 years running, and in at least one instance they're pretty sure it was caused by a non-attendee (presumably a troll/hater type) who lit a smoke bomb in one of the stairwells.
Try to imagine these sorts of incidents from the perspective of the hotel management. Even if you could prove that it was caused by an outsider, they could counter that it happened at their hotel because your convention was here, regardless of whether it was someone attending the convention.
The person could easily have been a non-attendee who used the opportunity of the commotion of people leaving the Westin that morning to vandalize the 17th floor. It is hard to say whether it was a con attendee or not. :/
The next sports scandal will be a player caught trying to get a certain convention banned.
this certainly is bad news.theres always one or two people (usually in that 16-25 age group and male ) who have to do stupid stuff. "this is why we cant have nice things!" ;p
i myself was on the 18th floor, so i didnt see anything but it disturbs me to no end that it "could" possibly be one of our attendees thinking this kind of thing is funny. it isnt. it hurts our relationship with the hotel and gives us a bad name, and that is not what we are going for. So, to the hotel staff and management, i apologize profusely for this kind of thing. its immature and stupid.
I noticed the difference in the numbers on Saturday night after midnight, when I returned to my room, but it never occurred to me that it could have been vandalism... I was just confused, thinking, "Weren't these numbers a different color earlier?"
I was on the 17th floor also. I was VERY disappointed to see numbers missing next to the room doors. Then to see a couple of drunk furs walking with the numbers stuck onto their foreheads. *facepalm* I can't remember if they were wearing their badges or not. Sorry...
There was a loud room party on the floor, so I suspect it was one (or few) of those attendees.
Apparently this has been an ongoing problem since 2006. There are people to attend the convention who are decent and there are those who are idiots. Then again, those who are drunk do stupid things. I'm guessing that the result of this is the increase of the con hotel rates each year.
