Oh lordy. I was at breakfast with some co-workers yesterday; I had mentioned that I had been off working at a convention in Pennsylvania and one of them, a huge Cubs fan, said, "Wait...where was this convention?" It turns out that Anthrocon got a mention on the Cubs broadcast as well. That fun awkward explanation of furry fandom to one's co-workers ensued

They make it sound like drinking next to a Raccoon is a bad thing, lol. But it was most likely a good move not to stay at the Westin. Just think of how much more crowded it would have been.

So, thus far the only bad or otherwise demeaning press AC has gotten has come from two different sports organizations. Kinda makes sense... I wonder how they feel about their own mascots...

Chicago Cubs Mascot:
Why...they don't have one.
Conclusion: They're both just jealous.

permalinkHere's another "Brewers and the wacky animal people" article, with a great photo (and some not-so-great comments):

permalinkI don't even think the best nights sleep in the world could help the Brewers anyway. They should have just joined the party.

Blarg, that one "alphawolf" guy's comment is not mine.
I do have an NC State Wolfpack shirt I bought sometime in 1989, though.
(where'd that name-change thread wander off to...)

I can see some of the Brewers are so childish that they can't take responsibility for their own poor performance, and need to attempt to use any excuse offered to draw attention from their own need to do their job better.
From the link:
So they travel a lot, and stay in hotels a lot. That means
they should know-better than I do, who does not- how to
address problems with their hotel stay.
I believe this is completely true. They talked about the
other guests. Didn't bother to LEARN anything about the
other guests, but they talked about them.
Close mind and open mouth.
Typical and sad.
We're supposed to believe that
A) he stayed in a hotel room, which he does often
B) an adjoining room had noise coming from it ALL NIGHT
(regardless of the TYPE of noise)
C) he lacked the wit to call the Front Desk (the
instructions are right on the desk phone) and say
"the room next to mine is noisy and it's 2am"?
I think he's demonstrated he's ignorant and undereducated,
but I don't think he's THAT stupid that he wouldn't call
them. He HAS to know how to use a phone. He HAS to know
when and how to call the front desk in a strange hotel.
But hey, any excuse to explain away his poor performance at
the game, right?
Then again, it's not like the regular readers are any
smarter-the responses displayed a similar level of
under-education.

Speaking of unexpected press...
This isn't about Anthrocon but it's epic failure in nature will give you a good laugh. Theres a grand total of a 0% chance this article is real and looks like more ungrounded furry-bashing.

Sadly, this happens every so often. Some columnists aren't diligent enough to check their sources, and simply pass on the same tainted information. We've known about that ridiculous vanity fair article for years; it was conducted based on interviews with a few people who happen to have had viewpoints that are extremely unusual, even for furries, but nonetheless sufficiently salacious as to make for an easy sell.
If this columnist had bothered to check her sources, she would have found that the furry community, by and large (and to the extent that they knew about it) was deeply offended by the vanity fair article and that it contains several glaring inaccuracies. Sadly, though, i think she just assumed that a widely distributed magazine article would be well researched and accurate, so she passes on the same old rumors and stereotypes that have been trotted out for years.
I'm tempted to send in a response politely pointing out the inaccuracies and directing her to wikifur for fact checking, but i'm not sure how much good it would do. I'll have to think about it.

permalinkWonderful.
I read the beginning and skimmed the rest- because I felt my
IQ score dropping as I progressed.
May I suggest he actually consider THE TEAM responsible for
the performance of THE TEAM? When I'm less than 100% at my
job, I don't get to offer excuses-I'm expected to take
normal measures to ensure I am prepared to work.

With crybabies like that on the team it's no wonder they performed so poorly.

permalinkThe Pirates should be in town during the con next year and have a "Furry Appreciation Night". We obviously contributed to the utter pwning of the Brewers and the Cubs, as they went 3-1 and 2-1, respectively.

*exhibits a shifty apearance* Yeah, it was all just chance that the other teams happened to be staying at the hotel... it's not like the Pirates paid everyone at the convention to make sure the other teams were too tired to play...
They only paid me. >:} *waves his two cents around triumphantly* ;P
