On Friday, at Fernando's Cafe, AllFur Radio was having a live show. During said show, someone showed up and started being extremely rude and harassing the furs because they were getting discounted food. Fernando chased the person off the establishment, and told them not to harass the furs. This person decided to pick up a brick and smash it over Fernando's head. To me and several of the furs I have talked to, Fernando is a hero in their and mine eyes. I would like to ask all of you, if you can draw, please send him a get well soon drawing, and even if you can't, to possibly send him cards, whatever you can, a token of affection for this local man who stood up for us, even when he didn't have to. I was really happy at seeing the local restaurants roll out the welcome mat for us this year... The pawprints on the sidewalk, the custom t-shirts for the weekend, were all terrific.
Really hate to see crap like this go down and I really hope it doesn't sour any of the locals on us next year. Keep us informed about anything AC does for him and I'll be happy to contribute whatever I can.

It was nice to see how some of the local resturants were so welcoming to us. I love how they had that special going on for us at the sub shop, I'm guessing it's Fernando's. But yeah. We do bring them a lot of business when this kinda stuff happens. I really can't talk about last year and all that since I wasn't at AC last year and this is to talk about the 07 con.
But yeah. I didn't see the thing happen and didn't know about it like, almost the con was done. That place was so nice to us, and hearing about someone bashing his head with a brick. That's just rude, wrong, and inhumane. He's just supporting us and all that, and helping along with the economy and what not. So yeah...I liked that place ;_;

permalinkI believe it was Friday morning when I was walking down Liberty to get some breakfast when I saw some woman using chalk to draw the pawprints on the sidewalk that would lead into the restaurant. It was even complete with a picture of a lion's head at the beginning of the path. I complimented her on her work as I passed by. And I'm glad I did. It rained while I was eating, and on the way back to the hotel, the chalk drawings were gone.

permalinkoh, that makes me feel better that he'll be ok. i got the same story as that, cept it was a hater not a bum. but im glad all is going to be taken care of. oh, and Kage, make sure you tell him that all us furs wish for a speedy recovery. ^_^

I too agree with everyone. I cannot do anything but express how amazingly relieved I am that he will be okay. I'm glad the man in question is in custody, and all I have to add to the mix is that he is very very lucky that I was not present at the time. He'd be begging cops to arrest him when I was finished. I've hurt men far worse for doing far less.

Sounds like maybe we were all lucky you weren't there at the time.
I appreciate your anger over what happened--it was awful. There's no way that the owner deserved that.
At the same time, tho, i really don't think it would help us as a community to gain a reputation for violence, even violence in defense of innocent people. One of the things i like about the furry community is that generally, in my (admittedly limited) experience, furries are some of the most friendly, peaceable, mild-mannered folks ever.
Coming after the panhandler might also have gotten you in trouble with the local authorities, and i don't think the owner would have wanted you to get in trouble in his account. Plus there's always the chance that you yourself could have gotten hurt (anyone who gets tasered twice is probably pretty formidable), and none of us would want that, either.
I don't know if it's any comfort, but from what i hear, getting tasered is right up there, fun-wise, with sticking your tongue in an electrical outlet. I'm sure the panhandler was very unhappy about the whole experience.

I agree with you completely. I do indeed understand that such an outburst would probably have only led to me bleeding and most likely having to be apprehended myself. It just gets very difficult sometimes. Spend a long enough time as a soldier and you start forgetting how to solve problems without violence. Even I could doubtfully hold myself back, even at the prospect of besmirching the furry reputation.

I can honestly tell you i've been tased twice (both times completly consenual) and it hurt so bad I've had a fear of electricity ever since. So I'm sure this pan handler will remember it. and hopefuly next time he's hungry he goes to a soup kitchen instead of tossing bricks.

This is partly my fault, and honestly, the focus was to just see who would be willing to send him a card or flowers, something to brighten his day. I should have researched my facts, or even better have talked to you first Kage, and for that I apologize.

Wow That is a terrible thing to happen.
I know I havent met the person(atleast not until AC08)
But something like that shouldnt have happen to a good man.
He seems to make all furries feel welcome and thats a good thing.
I will be sure to go by the restaraunt and meet him face to face next con
