Baker Bunny's Catering for 08 Room Parties
|
|
Hi Hi all I hope I'm not bothering anyone but at AC this year my freind Kenji had an Idea and I want to run it by you folks. now I know why I can't sell cookies and Cakes at the con, non competitive clause and the like so my freind had an Idea that maybe I could Cater Room parties. The basic Idea would be that I'd take orders over the internet, for cookies, cake, pies and the like (I don't have a set menu yet this is just a prelim) I'd charge a fair price for suplies, labor and shipping (which I'm sure will be the major money factor). then in the moneths before the con I'll bake the goods and prep them for shiping, then about a week or so before the con I'll ship the individual orders to the hotel so that the con goers can pick them up at the hotel when they arrive. ready for any sort of party they have planned. I'll still be preparing my own batches to hand out mind you so don't wory if you don't wanna place an order, (though I might make a small side business for small in con deliveries of special orders.) My first question would be to any constaff who might see this, would this be okay? I don't want to violate the rules. I thought since all hand ling of money and such would take place outside of the con this wouldn't voilate the rules. and my second question would anyone be interested in this sort of thing? well thats all for now hope to hear from you soon. |

permalinknot quite but belive it or not I do have plans on how to make Crunchy frogs and cockroach clusters, I've just got to work on my chocolaterring skills
I'll see if I can scan the pic from my cook book but basicly Caramel lizards are type of molasses cookie coated in caramel, and nuts and shaped like lizards
I can also offer buckets of chum, hot dog cookies (though I'll have to make a test batch to see how they taste, though don't wory they don't taste like hotdogs) and maybe the crayon cookies if I can get the flavor right
Czech bear paws might go over realy well too... *starts to ramble*

This question is best left for Jaime, who will be back on duty after July 16. Like the rest of Anthrocon's staff, she takes some time off when the convention is finished!

Unfortunately, the hotel does not allow any food & beverage that is not purchased by the hotel in sleeping & meeting rooms. Sorry for the inconvenience.

permalinkOkay, I'm curious about this now. Would that mean that ordering food from restaurants isn't allowed? This seems like the same idea, though I suppose maybe the locals have a deal in place with the Hotel.

permalinkyeah wow never heard a single hotel or any lodging place ever say you can't have your own food there. this would be a first and if that is so i definatly will never stay at the Westin cause well I bring my kids and they have their own snacks and such i always bring along.

I'll preface this by taking off my staff hat and setting it over there, since this has nothing to do with Artists Alley or Con Store. That having been said...
Let me see if I can explain this in a common-sense kind of way. The hotel policy is as stated above.
Does this mean that they are going to search every piece of luggage that goes to every room? No. They have better things to do with their time.
Does this mean they are going to stop coolers from going to people's rooms? Unlikely. After all, many rooms have refrigerators in them already.
Does this mean that housekeeping is going to bust you if they find a bag of groceries in your room? Of course not.
However, does this mean that they are going to put the kibosh on an offer to cater events in their hotel for money posted on a publicly-accessible message board? You'd better believe it.
Hotels make their money not only from sleeping rooms, but from catering as well. Advertising such a thing is not only direct competition, but also for a lot of hotels, their insurance policies are written such that coverage is provided only if all food is provided by the hotel, for food safety reasons.

I was sure they wouldn't search the rooms for food but what you've said makes sense. It's been a whils since my hospitality management classes.
oh well it was an interesting idea

permalinkIt's a thing called "corkage". A major part of the income of a hotel comes from the food they sell. They have a right to refuse other businesses from competing on their property. Pizza and other food delivery is apparently an exception. Also you can bring outside food in most of the time. You cannot, however, cater a party or the like.

I know this is just going to come out sounding all wrong...
but... if I read the response right... Baker Bunny can't do the catering in the hotel itself...
is there anything that would stop him from having the catering elsewhere... say like the roof of the convention center or on the of the patios?
Failing that, would there be any... local issues... that would prevent Baker Bunny from providing food for any nearby parks?

Doing anything like that in the DLCC would almost certainly make the unions there unhappy.
In the parks, who knows?

I'm sorry... I'm not used to dealing with or considering unions. They've pretty been much gotten rid of where I live. I still forget that some cities have them.
