The day after - have the barebones up until monday?

I really liked the con. So many nice folks. And some really nice events too...

I just would have loved though to hang out a bit with folks for like a day longer, maybe catching up with some of those who had been busy in the dealer's den or at panels, or drawing their commisions because they were busy in the dealer's den or at panels before; just chatting or going someplace to eat with friends that were too occupied until sunday or whatever.
But with everything being torn down on monday morning and the zoo closing already it was pretty hard to even make out who was still around...

So... Who else thinks it would be great if the con went on for one more day, not full scale with scheduled events (perhaps?) and everything but just, like, shrinking to the third floor, with zoo, tigerden internet access, pinboard, maybe admin desk?
Just so there still IS something where the remaining folks can hang out, regroup, or pass away the time till their flight or ride goes?
I also think more folks, especially those who have a pretty long trip, would like to stay another day if there still are at least the barebones of the con around, especially if it becomes an official day of the con, anthrocon hotel discount included. Also would make room parties on sunday more comfortable if staying longer than monday morning doesnt hurt.

Arriving by plane rather late in the evening usually, I also try to arrive one day early as well, on wednesday in this case, so... if the hotel con discount rates could be negotiated to be from like wednesday to tuesday, that would surely be a nice help too. O: )
(knowing myself and my luck, they likely ARE already. Smiling Anyway: Yeah for furry socializing beyond sunday!)

Oh, I totally agree with you 100% on more time, but the con staff and the artist-types would murder the world in the worst of ways if they had to go for more time than they do already.

I'm all for a week of pure con goodness though. Not gonna happen, but a bunny can dream.

Perhaps an underground movement of persons booking facilities at the hotel for pre and post con activities?

Well, part of the issue is the cost associated with keeping those spaces. We pay quite a large amount for those spaces. And as nice as it would be to keep them...they really are pretty expensive.

Now that's not to say that congoers can't stay an extra day or two and enjoy a little extended vacation. (I myself went riding roller coasters in Ohio immediately after the convention with a group of furs.) But keeping space in the Westin is really pretty cost prohibitive for us. Also it's not to say that folks aren't arriving earlier and earlier to get in more quality time with their friends. (I heard of people arriving as early as Monday at the hotel.) That's always an option as well.

Sadly, there is a time when we just have to acknowledge that the convention is over. Staff has to turn in our radios, pull down our materials, pack our gear, and get our equipment ready to go to the storage locker. It's also a time when the we can catch our breath, look around and see that folks really did have a good time, and had many fond memories that they will take home with them. It's then that we make our resolve to come back. We'll have an even better convention next year, with more friends and more good times and more memories.

I'd have to say i agree.

Even if we could afford the space, i can't imagine that it would end there. I'll say what KP isn't (probably for diplomatic reasons, but what do i know?)--if there's one more day of the bare bones space, you know KP is gonna be under pressure to squeeze in just one or two more workshops or other events, maybe one more dance...and then a few more...and then a few more...

Before you know it, the whole con is a day longer, and then ppl are asking the same thing about tuesday that you're now asking about monday.

Also, the longer AC runs, the higher the registration fees go, because something has to pay for the space usage. We have folks struggling to cover their costs as it is.

I'm as sorry as anyone to head home after several wonderful days with y'all; it's a special joy, and i'm already looking forward to coming next year for as long as i reasonably can. But on this one, i think the staff do have to draw the line (since there's no way we participants ever will), and sunday is as sensible a place to draw it as any.

As KP points out, though, there's really nothing to stop you from putting up a sign and gathering together all those flying out late monday for a post-con frolic. As long as the staff don't actually have to do anything...

While an extension of a convention sounds like a great idea to the fandom, here's what would happen. There would just be more and more parties till the wee hour of the morning on Tuesday. LOL. Last year I got to the hotel on Wednesday and I think that was perfect. There were a few furs there suiting and hanging out in the lobby, having sort of a fur/mundane mixer. This year I wasn't able to get there till midday Friday Sad and I agree that I didn't get the full con experience.

Aw... not even the zoo? PWEAAAASE. O: )
Costs is a very understandable reason of course. If even that one storey is too expensive or one has to book the entire convention centre or nothing, its perfectly clear that it wont be.

@Aiden: I wouldnt mind parties until monday or tuesday morning. And I guess there even are some without an official monday already. I just wouldnt know, having no idea where the furs that are still around are, without a central place to hang out or the pinboard Smiling

Finding some furs to hang out with until Tuesday really is just by word of mouth. I had the opportunity to hang for a little while longer but decided to just go ahead and get my coon butt back to Chicago and take what I've learned and prepare for the next con (probably MFF). Best advice is to start your OWN room party. Get your room till Tuesday and let people know that you're staying and everyone's welcome. I'll leave it to you to work out the further details. Especially in furry, if you can't find a group to meet your needs then start one.

We had this same discussion about running more events Thursday. We'd just end up with people asking for Wed events eventually....

The convention has an official start time, and an official end time. There's nothing saying you can't arrive sooner and hang out (which I did), or stay later and hang out (which many people did.)
