AC 2007 was my first time attending a con, so I was very excited for it. Rather than showing pictures though, I drew up some comics of each day. These are all true stories, albeit some are a tad exaggerated.

Day One - http://www.furaffinity.net/view/654068/

Arrival at the Omni, first time ever staying anywhere that gives complimentary copies of a newspaper.

Day Two - http://www.furaffinity.net/view/654073/

Actually didn't get to spend as much as I wanted, due to holds on debit cards from the hotel.

Day Three - http://www.furaffinity.net/view/654081/

Doing impressions after drinking is never a good thing.

Day Four - http://www.furaffinity.net/view/658127/

Picture sums it up nicely.

Looking forward to next year!

PS - To whomever might have picked up my "freebie" comic that I pinned up on the big pink board, just let me know that you have it and if you plan on posting it online anywhere.

Now now, didn't you see any of the dozens of warnings we posted about that very thing?

Actually, I think I need to take the blame for this. When creating the hotel pages, I did not make the warnings about debit cards as prominent as they could have been.

I'll try to do better on the 2008 website.

Due to lack of any other means of payment, all three years I have attended Anthrocon I have used a debit card.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I've never had a problem. I am by no means well off, but I do keep enough in my account to cover the expense of the hotel and have some spending cash.

But really, the minute I handed over my card to the nice lady at the front desk of the Westen, she looked at it and said, "Sir, you DO know that the hotel places a hold on your account that covers your bill for the nights stayed plus 40%..."

Yatta yatta yatta, even the hotel persons were informing people of this. Between the LARGE warnings issued on the general forum boards, the intense discussion on the matter in multiple threads, the issue frontpaged well in advance of the con, the hotel itself telling people....I don't think there is really much more you can do.

And don't blame yourself Giza. You're doing everything in your power to inform people. At some point, they do have to take the initiative and actually read the warnings or do the research. You can't do that for them.

Have to agree with you there; this affected me too. It's applicable even without a debit card, of course, since you have to leave a deposit in some form.

What I'd like to see is the deposit information posted inseparably from the room rates, e.g. "The AC rate is $105 a night, plus a refundable $50 deposit per night for incidental expenses." The Web site ought not to let anyone walk away with only one half of that information---as happened in my case.

Well even despite being told of the holds, we did end up transfering hotels. We were originally booked into the Quality Inn University Center, but when it was found that the only member in our group who had a car would pretty much not be able to use it due to lack of gas money, we decided to try our luck with the Omni. So essentially I had not one but TWO holds on it, and I thought the first one would disappear a lot more quickly than it actually did.

Note to anyone interested - a hotel will not clear a hold early if you pull out of the reservation early - at least, the Quality Inn didn't. They kept it on there AND charged the price of the one night's stay at the same time, so it was even more than it should have been.

I think the following line sums it up then:

"What the **** is that on the ceiling?! And this painting ... that's not a flower! Oh dear god, it won't come off my fingers! AAAUUUUGH!"

This looks like a job for *cue the music*

COON POWERS ACTIVATE!!!

In order to get around the "hold" you just need to reserve the room on another card that you don't intend to use. Then at check out time you pay for the room with your intentional debit card.
