The title pretty much sums it up Smiling

Although I didn't really do much of the partying thing at all this year (okay I caught the tail end of a party at 2 am on the last night of the con), I heard a lot about some "Blue Oasis" getting shut down because of noise complaints. I wasn't at the party but a lot of furs were miffed (the theory being that the power of prude toppled over yet another monopoly of fun), but yet again I wasn't at the party so that's only speculation by a lot of furs that were at the party.

Anypoop, I was wondering what thoughts would be on adding to registration the option of reserving a room on the "quiet floor(s)"?

Basically something just for compromise because we all want to have a good time, and that's why we go to AC Smiling

If it was due to someone wearing their Prudezilla suit and trampling Funokyo, I'd personally be really sad if I was kicked out of the hotel all on the account of someone looking for the self gratification of bringing people down just 'cause they feel that other people having fun is some kind of personal stab at them.

(I used to be one of those people actually, until I just gave in and tried having fun)

Heh, it sounds bitter, but I'm not trying to be. I'm just offering a suggestion and an observation/concern.

The name of the party is Frozen Oasis. And we don't know the exact reason it was shut down, other than a police officer stopping by at 1:30 AM and asking them to shut down. (The music was turned off at 11:15 PM, so it certainly wasn't noise)

Otherwise, all floors in The Westin are "quiet" by default. In fact, the Frozen Oasis folks went the extra mile to keep the noise of their party from getting out into the hallway, and did a pretty job at it.

Indeed - Hotel patrons have a reasonable expectation that they will be allowed to come and go to their paid-for rooms, rest and relax without the frantic sounds of a base beat booming through the floor sub-members or throught the walls (an entire room wall is resonant at those low sub-woofer frequencies; the other, higher-pitched sounds of music are often effectively blocked, but not the base stuff), and to either work on their own projects or presentations to their own guests, or just sleep.

I did not go to the Frozen Oasis party; didn't go to any parties that required enduring a wait for an elevator to get me up to the suite levels. But unless FO had a suite that was on a floor with no other guests, I find it hard to believe that the presence of their "private party" and the mutitude of furs going to and fro did not have some impact on non-AC guests, who might not have bargained for rooming next to a discoteque.

The sound might have been quite tolerable in their own suite, but those base notes sound without diminishment throughout the whole floor, sometimes.

Were all of the AC guests who attended this party quiet and well-composed and considerate of the other folks in the hotel? Heck - I was at the William Penn, and had to endure loud and obnoxious furfen, totally oblivious to the fact that they weren't in a football stadium, stomping down my hall late at night.

Oh - and for the record, I did attend the FO party at FC this year; the second time through, I brought Jerry Pournelle with me. I had to wear earplugs, but I was prepared for that. Dr. Pournelle, who served in a field artillery unit, didn't need to worry about sound levels.

We both enjoyed the party, while we were there. Someone - perhaps Soron - handed Dr. Pournelle a glow stick on a string, and I'm quite sure that there was at least one flash picture taken of him with a daquiri in one hand and a twirling glowstick in the other.

The door attendant/bouncer - again, I think it was Soron - was most diligent in making sure that only folks "of age" came in, and put those wristbands on us for tagging and verification. So I know that the Frozen Oasis folks do abide by the restrictions and covenants put upon their ability to present a party.

But this does suggest the virtue of having a "party floor" in the hotel. Easier to control, and party-oriented traffic pretty much doesn't tie up the hotel elevators, in going from floor-to-floor to sample parties distributed all over the place.

Oh yeah and a special thanks to you for directing me and some friends to finding that party on the 9th floor on the last night of the con Smiling

(we were in the elevator waiting area on the 25th floor when you got off and asked if you knew of any party happenings)

I had another idea similar to this, but it was mostly in response to the reports made by the cubs and brewers that furs were apparently "barking all night". While this is likely a load of crap on their part. It might be an interesting idea to allow the hotel one or two floors reserved for non con attendees so there isnt so much of a clash between furs and people who simply came to stay at the hotel.

I beleive it would be difficult to discern over the internet who is going to the con and who is simply staying at the hotel, but one floor set aside for people who dont want a lot of commotion would be something to consider. A quiet floor would do this too, but typically both these problems would be resolved if folks would keep their noise levels down.

Something to consider,
CJ

If it were that simple, we surely would have done it.

So there WERE parties after all...
I knew I should have checked the topmost floors, but me was too lazy to queue for an elevator or climb up all the way too. O: )
Are there actually non-con guests at the Westin? Isnt it like, booked out by furs half a year before the con already?

edit: pro designated floors. Good thing.
