Comment Moderation is up!

Those of you who have valid accounts as of this posting, you'll be pleased to know that I have enabled comment moderation on the system.

What is comment moderation? Comment moderation is a way for you to provide feedback on other peoples' comments. If someone posts something that you find particular useful, you can mark it as Informative or Insightful. Did someone post something that is Offtopic? Feel free to mark it as such.

How do I use comment moderation? At the bottom of every comment, next to the "reply" link, is a dropdown which lists the different moderation choices. Make whichever choice you feel is appropriate for the comment. Then, at the bottom of all of the comments is a button called Moderate Comments. Click that and your moderations will take effect.

What does this do for me? Let's say you're browsing a thread of comments and you only want to see the comments that are particularly useful. Just go to the "Comment Viewing Options" found at either the top or the bottom of the comments and choose what comments you'd like to view:

  • Positively Scored Comments - All comments which have a net positive rating.
  • Default Comments and Higher - All comments which have not been moderated or have a positive rating.
  • ALL Comments - Display all comments, including those which have been moderated down.

That reminds me of the occasional Slashdot comment that would be seen with a box under it that "rates" it as insightful, unhelpful, funny, or whatnot. This should prove to be quite a useful feature for us all. Smiling

EDIT: After looking at the current comments in another topic, I find that yes, it seems to mirror Slashdot. It isn't a bad thing. It's actually rather cool. This will be very useful. Laughing out loud

Bingo.

Unfortunately, how a comment is moderated is not displayed. I may be doing more source hacking in the future to support that, though.

I must agree with the usefulness of this feature, because as we know, several members (embarassingly, including myself), have posted off-topic or random comments that really didn't contribute to the discussion. I really do like this feature and I should find myself using it more and more in the future. Smiling
