Headless Lounge

Im going to be 2 here and have a little bit of a rant

The headless lounge, a few of things:

1 - They were not that well sign posted

2 - Not enough fans

3 - When the sign says 'Fursuiters and Assistant Only'....Shouldnt that mean ONE assistant, and not 3 or 4 like i saw some people having, it started to get a bit crowded at one point, i hope next year there might be some way of regulating that

Ya I ran in there to deliver a serious message and noticed how packed it was. Since I wasn't with a suiter I got cussed at pretty much >< and I didn't get to deliver my message and cause of it I think someone go pissed off at someone eles.. =O

Regardless if you with a fur suiter or not, the behavior you received in the fur suit lounge is totally unacceptable. If you really had a legitimate reason to be in the lounge then you should have not been pounced on by anyone.

I will agree with you on the fan issue, I did feel that extra fans in the headless rooms would have helped. However as far as the one assistant per suit, I must disagree with you here, my shark suit requires a minimum of two handlers if not three. Getting in and out of the suit requires a team of trained pit crew workers, just like NASCAR. In fact I was joking with a buddy of mine at the con, and told him I was going to make up tee shirts for next year with “sharkys pit crew” printed on them.

But I cant use NASCAR due to copy right issues, so maybe we can use “NASHARK” or “NASFISH”..

I can second that it takes more then one handler to get you in and out of sharky. Another fursuiter and myself helped you into it before the dance the day of the masquerade, and neither of us having done it before, it made for a tricky time. I do not think that anyone would give you any trouble if you wanted several handlers with you.

If the dam suit were not so fun to wear and suit in, than I would have scrapped it long ago. It amazes me how much children love the suit, we do local suiting at a state park back here in maryland. Last year we had a large event, we had been suiting all day and were all very tired.

I finally took a well earned rest from the shark suit (weights about 30 lbs) and went out in much lighter full body cougar suit (Carson Cougar)

A little boy with his father comes to me, He gives Carson a nice big hug and then promptly asks, "Mr kitten I am looking for the shark, have you seen him"

I know that in the Westin, we had a nice big sign on an easel in front of the lounge. I'm not sure about the DLCC, I'll check into it.

2 of our large (3 foot diameter) fans were actually damaged in the truck ride over. There were rather large dents in the side of them that obstructed the motion of the blades. (We did get them working later in the con, thanks to some help from Mrianti)

We'll see what we can do about crowd control in the fursuiter lounge in future years.

Philly to Pittsburgh on the PA turnpike is the definition of "one hell of a ride".

I got to ride in bouncy along with Sam for the 2006 convention.

It was anything but boring.

I remember driving up the on-ramp onto the turnpike around 8 in the morning just outside of Philly, doing about 30 miles per hour, and feeling every single bump on the ramp, and thinking to myself, "Oh boy, THIS is going to be a fun ride!"

I am not sure if the problem was too few fans, or just that the ones we had were being incorrectly utilized. The large floor fans were being used to dry out heads instead of to cool bodies. Each lounge did have a small table top fan for drying heads that worked really well, but only one person at a time could use them. Maybe next year we could get a few more small table top fans for drying out suit parts so that the large fans can be reserved for cooling down bodies.

Hey, super-sponsor registration wasn't a half-bad stab at it Smiling

Are there particular requirements on the fans needed for the headless lounges? I'm thinking of those el-cheapo 20" plastic box fans that can be had for $12-15 a pop.

There's a store here in Boston that set up a vertical 2x3 array of those on a tube-and-wire shelving unit, and with those puppies running on high, you got basically a solid indoor gust of wind. I'd imagine something like that could work pretty well without breaking the bank.

All I was hoping to point out was that when the large, hundreds of dollars a piece, fans were aimed to the ceiling with three fursuit heads sitting on top of each one they seemed slightly wasted. Being but a lowly biology student I never claimed to have the best solution to the problem of fans or funds -- perhaps we should pass the job of solving both issues to the botanists or the geneticists.

I brought a yellow table top blower fan, $40.

and I had a small powerfull house fan for bodies.. I can't remember how much that one was..
the giant big fans that the con provides, those are like 200-300$

couldn't bang the dents Out?

Sure, I'll just beat on sheet metal with my fists. What could possibly go wrong?

And before you say it, no--I suspect the union would have issues with us using tools to repair equipment.

Thank you for all the replies

When i saw '1 assistant to 1 fursuit' I understand that there are special cases, but i saw some furs having 4, 5, 6 'assistants' in there. One i saw with 10! That i did not like

We don't have enough staff members to have someone in the Headless Lounge for the entire time it's open...

..unless someone would like to volunteer...!

Personally, I do not see a problem with saying, "Hey, it's getting very crowded in here! If anyone is not actively helping someone in or out of suit, can you exit the room to make way for others?" in the thunderous bellow for which I seem to be so well known.

(Of course, part of the problem is that some folks take the word "Lounge" too literally.)

The headless rooms were in the same places as last year, the Washington on the 2nd Floor of the Westin Hotel, and the room across from the SoPB in the DLCC. They could have been more labeled, though, I agree.

2 - Not enough fans

This I agree with. If anybody has giant fans, please bring them if you can! Even in partial suit, I got extremely hot.

One or two assistants per fursuiter is fine, I believe. If you're someone like Sharky or MechWolf, and have an extremely complex suit, then you'll need more than one assistant to be with you. Most veteran fursuiters, though, needn't an assistant.

I'm here to help the fursuiters regardless, so if there is anything that I can do for you personally, feel free to tap me on the shoulder.

my 2 fans were the first fans and only fans in the lounge in the convention center for like the first few days.. I had a yellow blower fan on a table, and a metal floor fan on the floor.. I later had to take the floor fan to the fursuit meet and greet panel, thats when I started to feel ill.. I think I overdid it that day, and felt like crap the rest of the weekend.. even ended up in the hospital for a few hours friday night/early sat morning.. really ruined my weekend.

And thanks that you had your fans in there
i first got to the lounge and thats all there were

We had a sign outside the room, and in the program guide, there was a specific page made with a "WHERE TO FIND THINGS" header. It had a section boldly titled THINGS FOR FURSUITERS, and described exactly the location of both fursuit green rooms.

I really don't know what more we can do. We can't afford neon.

you know, i would bet that there's a sign-maker in the fandom that might be persuaded to make one if you're really keen on the idea Eye-wink

I think part of the perceived issue with fursuiter assistants was the fact that there were alot of fursuiters at the con. I noticed many furs visiting in the lounge that were fursuiters OUT of suit. This may have appeared to be assistants when in fact they were just furs socializing out of suit.

I think we need to look at ourselves and remember, when the lounge starts to get full and you are out of suit or cooled off, you need leave and make room for others.

I believe we were afforded adequate square footage. Once the fan issue is resolved it is up to us to keep "our place" in order.

One is about 6" wide, the other is about 12-18" wide. They're not much, but they might be nice for drying out a head.

i dunno, i thought the drive in was actually quite beautiful! though, considering that it was right after a rainstorm and there were clouds creeping through the rolling hills and trees (*swoons*)

though, i was coming from the north and on that highway that passes through that beautiful (as is) valley kinda deal.
