hey guys, haven't been here in a while but i have something i could use some help with. I've recently told my friends about me being a furry, most of them don't quite get it and would like to better understand what i'm talking about. i've linked them to the "what is furry" page on here but they said it didn't help much and i can't find the explanations to do it justice. i was hoping you guys could give your two cents on how to explain what being a furry really means and what it's all about. like i said, i've tried but i can't find the words to give a decent explanation. thanks for your help |

Personally, I explain "anthropomorphic" in words they can understand. Use examples like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Tony the Tiger, or the GEICO gecko. Once tehy understand what that is, I ask why cartoons get all the fun? As long as it's presented in a light-hearted manner, most people get the idea pretty quickly. It's a lot easier to explain something that's already familiar to them...
I'm just cute that way

I live in one of the least Furry states in the US (Louisiana), and the least Furry section of the US (The South), and I have had to explain my Furriness to so many people that I'm starting to become a bit of an expert. o_O
The best way I've found to explain it is to start with the origns (no don't give them a 2 hours history lesson). Start off with the fact that Furry originates from Sci-Fi, I usually say something like "Furry is a sub-set of the Sci-Fi genre. Being Furry is like being a Trekkie." That usually gives them enough info to satisfy the "huh?" part of the explaination.
From there I move into the "why I'm here" part, which is as individual as every Furry in the fandom.
Keep it at short as possible, and it doesn't hurt to write down what you would say, before you get asked to say it. Writing it will give you a different perspective on the words you are using to communicate.
FYI or in-case you care: I've actually explained the fandom to my entire family, most of my friends, and everyone in my church. I've even worn the tail and ears to church before.
Hope some of this helps.

permalinkya that helps, but all of them kno what furries are (got pix everywhere) they're just confused about what i mean when i say it's my lifestyle and i really can't articulate my feelings and thoughts into words. i try, but it just confuses them further. i'm hoping somebody can help me explain what it means to be a furry.

These two explain it far greater then I could. If what they say applies to you, or inspires you to think about what being a fur really is to you, hopefully it can help ya out.
