why would you have to tell your parents if you don't want to?
personally i find there is nothing wrong with being a furry, just need to give them correct information on it. sucks there so much bad information, but then again thats with every group there is.

Because he's 12, that's why.
He should talk to his parents, he should not be trying to hide any aspect of his life from them. They are there to guide him and keep him safe.
I have a 9yo and a 11yo, and I have made sure they can tell me anything. I want them to tell me everything.
Please don't instruct minors to deceive their parents.

Minors don't seem to need instruction on how to be deceptive these days. Especially here in Philly where some are already dealing by age 6.
If anything, they need to be taught how to be honest.
Furry is really tricky to try and explain at that age. If parents get the wrong idea, and already have a strong bias, it could be quite troublesome. I'm glad I found out about furry later than sooner, to be honest.

I wasn't trying to have him deceive his parents nor do i think its a good idea to do that. I was more of a general question, but most likely poorly written. I guess i was more curious on if he was trying to initiate the conversation or his parents were.
I was trying to find a post i remember seeing about 1-2 weeks ago that had about 3 good links for information, thought that might be good to offer, but cant find it =/

Lets see, I normally don't give advice in this area, but I think I can help.
Here is a random list I just thought of to help you with telling them:
Show your interest slowly. Try and get a comic or two that is furry related. Show them you have some interest through that.
Try and get a poster or two that is animal related. Dragons, Tigers, Wolves, What ever.
If you have your own computer and your house has broadband (DSL or Cable or something along those lines, not Dial Up), set your desktop wallpaper to something furry related. Nothing to grand.
When you eventually DO address your parents about in person, DO NOT call it 'crap'. Why? Because they might (or not) get the impression that you actually don't hold respect for this or your not seriously considering it as something you like.
Show them the 'What Is "Furry'" page on this site:
http://www.anthrocon.org/about-furry
That normally helps a lot.
Try to show them ANYTHING related to furry that isn't mature or higher rated (DO NOT even mention that kind of stuff to them.) or is fursuit related. Thats for later stuff. The Fursuiting part is. Forget about the mature work.
Thats about everything I can think of. Hopes that helps!

hey i'm new to this stuff as well but in the past i've liked loads of stuff that some see as 'not normal'. eventually they always find out so if they do i advise you just tell them the truth that worked out great for me. now they don't ask questions or get suspicious. but if i were you i'd let them bring the topic up ok?

permalinkthe truth is the best policy with your parents especially at that age and it does pay off if you show they can trust you your age now with little things when you get to be older they wont have as hard a time trusting with big things an
example : when i was little i always asked my mom before i went some where had a friend who didn't just hoped in their friends car or got off the bus at their house
when i got my license and want to go out my mom didn't have a problem with it she didn't even set a curfew but my friends had to fight with his mom every time he wanted to barrow the car
your parents may surprise you you never know when i showed my mother the pictures from AC i half expected her to ask what was wrong with all the people wearing ears and tails she said she wanted to make a fursuit for the fun of it for me to take next year the last thing i was expecting
