Hehe, we've got ratings! Can I ask why? I'm not complaining. I just am curious as to why. I mean, I am a fox. I think its funny that all the ratings are nice no matter what. Even one star is "Not so Great", while two is "good". |

Uh-oh, the secret's out!
As some of you have noticed, I just added a ratings system, but had not yet made an announcement. There are a few reasons why I put ratings on:
1) To encourage user participation in the forums, and provide tangible feedback and encouragement to users who make quality contributions.
2) So that, at a future date, I can do a little data mining on the vote database and see what kinds of topics and subject matter that users like.
3) I can periodically see if there are any users who consistently receive low ratings, contact them individually, and perhaps provide them with some advice or suggestions on how to better contribute to the community.
That, and, I must confess that the idea of having ratings seemed pretty cool.

Actually, the last one is pretty cool. I'll actually vote because of that.

I noticed a bug. On certain posts the rating thing will flicker when you try to rate it. It will move. Making it really really hard to vote. Rate. Whatever.

Yeah, I saw that too. I'm trying to come up with a way to reproduce it reliably before I report it.

Although seems kind of strange you can vote for yourself.

permalinkWhy not? Presidential candidates get to vote for themselves too
Of course, I wouldn't. See, part of my Presidential strategy would be to specifically vote for the other guy myself. That way, I have an excuse no matter what happens. He wins, he sucks "Well you should have voted for me". He wins, he rules, "Hey I voted for him too!". I win, I do good, no problem. I win, I suck, "Well you should have voted for the other guy. I did!"
It's fool-proof!

I noticed the ratting a day or two ago but thought nothing of it. I just shrugged and knew someone else would say something. Was also waiting to see an announcement about it.

Well, I'm afraid I have a bit of bad news... I was doing some debugging, and learned that the ratings module (jratings) just makes an INSANE number of queries. I was literally seeing hundreds of queries on a single batch of comments for a forum post. So, I had to disable voting on comments.
I left on voting for posts, since that seems to have saner database usage, and we'll see how that works out.
