Short and sweet.
Since me and my bud will be arriving via Amtrak's Capitol Limited #30, which is set to arrive at 5:30AM and as such, we will be in great desire to crash on a real bed. (A cross country trip, I can run and touch the pacific ocean right now if I wanted to ^_^ )
We will be reserving a room at the Westin for the 25th->30th, now, the day we get in (the 25th) theres no "early early check in" is there? Because paying for a 24th->25th extra night for not even being there that first day doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
Figuring as the station is just a stones throw from the hotel and the Capitol Limited being a rather large transit line, they, or someone else, might of encountered this issue before.
Only other question is when will we expect to see the Amtrak group rate get issued?
Thanks in advance!

I don't know of the Westin doing any sort of early check-in, no. Once we get the hotel contract finalized and you go to make the reservation, it certainly wouldn't hurt to ask them -- I'm sure you're not the only person who has arrived early in the morning. I am certain, however, that upon arriving, you could check your bags with the Westin so that you do not have to carry them around with you.
I know that the Amtrak thing is in the works, however I do not have an ETA on that. Uncle Kage might, though.

Sadly as far as I know, no they don't have an early check in
I dont know if it's changed since I was there in '06, but My roomates and I arrived at about 11 AM from the airport and had to wait till 3 pm to check in. Apparently this was the norm since several other individuals, all of whome were not part of AC, ended up having to use their bag check service like us. When your check in time arrives they took our Bags up to our room which was super awesome. We just got our keys and whent up, and BAM our bags were their smiling at us on the beds.
Of course this leaves you with a bit of free time and a desperation to get into a nice comfy bed for a snooze. Sadly I have no idea on how to help with this, unless you want to take my rout and just overdose on coffee and cookies until check in time.
If you go back to the desk at about 1 pm they may be able to let you check in then, depends on if the room is ready or if they are overly strict on their check in process.

Blah evidently I need some more coffee. I'm refering to the OMNI not the westin....lol But I'm sure the Westin works the same. Most hotels offer these services save for the really low down ones like motor hotels and the like.
Lol my appologies for the screw up there.

permalinkCheckout at the Westin is 11am.
Checkin at the Westin is 3pm.
I'm aware of late checkout at the Westin- I've overheard Uncle Kage himself discussing it. (That's as reliable as I can get, short of Jamie telling us.)
I'm aware of early checkin at the Westin- my roomie this year checked in before 3pm. However, we're talking an arrival after 11am but before 3pm. Something like 5:30am-6am, no, I don't expect early checkin for THAT early. I think the smart thing WOULD be to show up, check your luggage with the Westin (I suspect Giza's correct on this), go to the Steel City Diner, eat a leisurely breakfast, then head over to AnthroCon's setup area. Since you're arriving super-early (Wednesday morning) there probably won't be the normal AC hangout areas set up for use already. However, AC staffers will be doing all sorts of things TO set them up, so go there and see what you can do to help out. A few hours later, you should be able to check in (early) and clean up, possibly returning to help with setup some more. (They certainly could use you back...)
Alternately, you could tour Pittsburgh a bit, if you knew where you were going.
Once you hit Thursday morning, the official hangouts will all be in place and in use. Since a lot of the early arrivals will be arriving across Wednesday (even 10% of AC attendees would be over 100 arriving that day/evening), and if you wanted to hang out with AC'ers, Wednesday evening would probably be the earliest to find non-staffers to hang out with. (At least after 3pm, when normal checkin begins.)

Unless Amtrak changes their policies radically, the discount will not work for COACH, but only for FIRST-CLASS. It's likely you'll find COACH more than comfortable enough. *checks Capitol limited line* If the reclining seats (something like 1st class plane seats) aren't enough for you (I can sleep most of my trip if I'm tired), you can look at upgrading to a bedroom for more than plane-fare to AC,(it's a moving hotel room) or to a "Viewliner Roomette" with upper and lower berths (add $114 per run, per room). I figure you will NOT feel the need for that. (For that, you'd probably just fly there.) Basically, under 14 hours of trip, you can "manage" with the coach amenities on Amtrak. (Especially if you're travelling on the "redeye" and sleeping for several hours.) The entire run from Washington DC to Chicago-and this is much longer than you'll need- is 17:30. THAT is survivable in Coach, so I don't think you'll need more. Checked baggage (subject to restrictions) are provided, along with a full Dining car and a lounge.
I do fine on the Pennsylvanian, which does NOT have a full Dining car (just a snack bar) nor a lounge. You youngsters should be able to manage as well.
So, in summary, the trip by COACH is fairly cheap, does not get to use the discount, and is all you'll need to travel to AC by train.

Thank you all for your replies, as it looks now it seems as if were going to have to keep ourselves awake, or maybe grease the management wheels (hey ya never know!)
Heh yeah, the room upgrades for #30 won't be *that* much unnecessary (A good tip to all traveling, if you check with the sleeping car attendant to see what rooms are open you can find the conductor to get you an "upgraded" its cheaper than booking online {by about 50% yeah, I know}, yet the downside is there might not be room, but it doesn't hurt to ask). It won't compare nearly to the 40hour trip from Los Angeles (My friend HATES flying, and well we wanted to do a road trip, and were both railfans, so this happens to fit nicely)
Looks to me now that every thing is all squared away, all thats left now is to wait, and click "reserve"
Looks like my counter has some work to do =)

Okay now, can we reserve our rooms now? There is still a notice on the site saying not to do it yet!

permalinkWhile I would never purposely push the con staff to accelerate the contracts and paperwork necessary to reserve rooms, I am ready to reserve a room the minute the option becomes available. However, I can wait as long as it takes. There will certainly be enough time to get it done before they get sold out (what was it, February last time?).

permalinkAFAIK,
Jaime does not review every thread in every forum.
Jaime works for the hotel, and checks the "hotel questions" forum.
I'd make a new thread THERE to ask Jaime.

If you see a validation error, that means that Drupal's anti-XSS code is getting the better of you. Please try the following in this order: 1) Close the tab in your browser, 2) Open a new tab, 3) Click the above link again.
If that doesn't fix the problem, contact me in IM for more details. This happens so rarely that I haven't been able to reproduce the problem... once I can get it reproduced properly, I can better figure out what's going wrong and give a better list of fixes.

permalinklast year me and a freind arinve around 5:30 am the day we had the room for and was told we had to wait for 6AM to check in so we don't get charged the extra night so as long as you check in at 6am you will be fine

The only way you can get a room that early is if they have one available that has already been made up. That is very, very unlikely to happen this year!
