Okay, so I'm quite new to this whole furry fandom thing, so far I love it, and fursuiting looks like LOADS of fun and I've always loved being creative and such..and making my own fursuit looks like the perfect opportunity to be creative And so this brings up my questions. How much roughly would it cost to get the materials together and the such, we don't have alot of money 2ndly how long did yours take to make? 3rdly and last, I live in a community that if they heard the term "furry" they would be like "OMGLOL" so I would have to keep it to my own, and trying to make a fursuit, that wouldn't be the easiest task, how would I go about keeping this my little secret? So there they are and any help is greatly appreciated |

I can only answer part of this since I have not had the chance to build mind yet. I did gather all the materials I needed except the foam for around 150.00 but that is also because jo ann fabrics was having a sale on faux fur.

permalinkOh, not as much as I had thought, also I don't know what materials I would need, I would definantly use faux fur, that stuff is awesome, but as for the head goes...I'm completely lost. I plan on this being a full suit.

permalinkoh and www.denverfabrics.com is a great place to get fur. they have 1cent swatches to get for testing and i have purchased their fur before. rather good sturdy quality at really good prices.
heads are made from many things. most make them from carved foam or plastic canvas. that or they take foam strips and glue them together int he shape. I made a aluminum/ plastic hybrid. the aluminum produces the sturdiness and makes sure the head does not collapse under weight. it also is very light. the plastic allows for the fur to be attached. I'm workign on version 2 soon. version 1 was a prototype to see what i coudl do with basic layout. ^_^
there are many tutorials on how to do it. some harder to understand than most. i found it easier to glance at them and then engineer my own i find it more fun hehe

I would set aside around $200us for the suit. This is more money then it will take, but the extra will provide a buffer if you have anything unexpected come up while you are building the suit. It takes me about 2 or 3 months for a fullsuit. As for the third question I would say just don't wear it out of your home for the third question, but I have never tried to hide my suits so I might not be the best source of information on this point.
Halfway or so down the page I have linked to there are some good links to construction tutorials:

permalinkyeah aroudn 200$ and lots of time. my head isn't made of foam. it is a aluminum/plastic hybrid i'm workign on. that plus the fur puts the head at around 50$ not bad huh ^_^. as for the rest of it. the fur for the body (depending on the brand nad length) will cost aroudn 85 to 100 for the yardage needed. again this all depends on what you are aiming for. if you are looking for special legs, foamed out muscles, etc that adds to cost. In the end the biggest cost is the time it will take to produce.

permalinkAh, thanks everyone, this won't cost nearly as how much I had thought, as for building it, I have a ton of time on my hands usually. The problem is living at home and parents, they wouldn't accept this sadly enough so I guess I may have to wait until I move from home.

If you could find others in your area, you could start a club and have "work nights" where you all get together at someone's house and build stuff. We had about 6 people over at my house gluing the holy heck outta stuff once a month until we all had suits.
We actually built an entire fursuit (and a nice one at that!) in about 3 hours once, but I got some serious sewing machines here.
Its also easier to explain costume building in October, due to Halloween. And... for some reason, parents don't freak as much if you are building a costume for a sci-fi convention, rather than for a furry convention, so some times you have to fib a bit. wink wink
