For those of you who don't know XKCD, it's a hilarious and awesome webcomic that is rather simplistic, but very witty. It is located here: www.xkcd.com. For those of you who are new to it, or haven't realized - there's mouse over text on every strip, which usually adds something pretty funny to it.

These are a few of my favorites:
Centrifugal Force
Substitute
Commented
Reload
Ninja Turtles
Hamster Ball
Online Communities
Shopping Teams
...er well I guess that's more than a few, but this comic's pretty good in my opinion.

On to why I'm posting...
So there's apparently a meeting occurring.

This meeting is in response to this comic here: Dream Girl. Those numbers there in the comic, are a latitude, longitude, date and time (if you didn't see that already). There's a lot of discussion over on their forums about going to this location at that time. It's a little bit north west of the center of Boston, in the North Cambridge area. The time would be this Sunday at around 2:38 PM I believe.

I was wondering if any people from here are thinking of going, because it promises to be a pretty interesting if not completely random event. I think I'll be taking the train there with a bunch of college people. At one point it was mentioned that over 700 people had joined a facebook group saying that they would show up for said event. 700 people mobbing that little park is going to be insane, but awesome. There are some plans to move everyone to another nearby and much larger park.

Just wondering what other people's plans / thoughts were on this.

Yes! I love XKCD. This is one of my favorites:

I personally interpret that comic as one way to describe the furry fandom and the social interactions between its members and the rest of society as a whole. Then again, maybe I'm just over-analyzing. Sticking out tongue

I had no idea there was a meetup planned. That sounds pretty cool. Don't think I'll be able to make it, though.

It was a load of fun! I took photos, and so did some of the people that I went with. I compiled them into a photo gallery. I was the guy with the red fox tail. The guy in the green shirt mid-way through the photos is Randall, the comic artist.

Here's a short write-up of how it went, when I reported it to my friends in an email.

We left on the train to get there sort of early. Once were on the red line train in boston, we started noticing various other people going to the XKCD thing. When we all got off of the train, there was a fairly decent mob - of somewhere around 20 people all headed there. When we arrived at the park, it was already getting decent amounts of people.

The park was gloriously renamed the "Xity of Kambridge, CD - Randall Munroe Sweetass-Park (Previous nesting ground of the Dromaeosaurs), and there were many other signs that were posted in various places. I believe that they were probably made by Randall himself, but who really knows.

Anyway, there was a large junglegym thingy close to the middle of the park, and people began climbing up onto it to secure spots and what not. There were a lot more people arriving after a short while. It was fun to talk to the other people there. All of whom were of course fans of XKCD, and therefore they were awesome. There was also some musicians around who played some music.

Around 20 minutes until 2:38, there was a seemingly unending stream of people entering the park. It was basically shoulder to shoulder - unless of course you sought higher ground - in which case you were probably standing on top of someone. At 2:38, Randall showed up, and he brought with him some very large boards. One of them had the Dream Girl comic on it, with the omission of the last statement.

Once he made his way around the park, he set up the boards on the chain link fence and said: "I dunno, maybe wanting something does make it real? So clearly, the comic needs to be corrected... We have 20 or 30 sharpies here, and about 40 feet of whiteboard for filling in the last panel. So, everyone fill in something."

Following the mad rush of the near 1000 people mass to write something on those boards, he began signing things that people handed to him. He was pretty cool, and friendly to talk to. The mob of people had us all closed in so tightly, that I was close enough to him to hear him get interviewed a few times.

After sticking around for a while afterward, we set out to try to catch the train. We failed, but ate nice food in china town. Then we took the next train.

Overall, it was a fantastic day, and it was a lot of fun.
