Heyos, all. Furlock here. I'm planning on attending AC '08 with a dear friend of mine as a high school graduation present from my parents. I'm going to be 18, so age won't be a problem. Now then, my problem resides in the price of the trip to get to Pittsburgh. I live in a small town called Yreka, California, and I'm not sure which airport I would use to get there. I'm going to guess that I would have to drive down to the San Fransisco International Airport, but there may be a closer airport, so I'm unsure. Anywho, I was wondering if any of you have a website I could go to to get an estimate. Any help anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated! THANKS! |

I like hhtp://www.travelocity.com - It gives you alot of various ways to compare prices.. gives you a calendar so you can see if flying out a day earlier will save you money, compares all the airlines and airports available to you.
But I wouldn't just go with the price they give you. Once your see an airline that matches your desires, go to the airline directly.. you'll often find they have another flight that might be cheaper than the one Travelocity shows you.
Good luck.

Skippy has good points. I have a few more:
1) If you're 90 days out from the con and haven't yet brought tickets, check www.farecast.com, they have technology which predicts what will happen to ticket prices, and can help you better decide when to actually buy the tickets. (Why yes, ticket prices go up and down all the time...)
2) While you *can* fly out from a local airport, chances are that it will just be a flight to the nearest major airport (San Francisco in your case) and then another flight to your final destination (Pittsburgh). So it may very well be cheaper to drive to San Francisco. (Plus, you won't have to worry about missed connections, etc.)
I guess what it comes down to is to research, research, and research some more into order to learn as much as you can about your different airplane and airfare options for getting to Pittsburgh.
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

permalinkIf a major airport is a REASONABLE distance to drive, I agree.
In this case, unless I'm reading my maps wrong, it may not be.
San Francisco's about middle of the state's coast, and
Yreka (according to Wikipedia) is along the state's north
border, in Siskiyou County.
According to Wikipedia,
*checks Wikipedia again*
Those counties appear to border Siskiyou County to the north and south.
Rogue Valley Airport is served by Delta, United, and USAirways.
========
Redding Airport is served by United.
From Rogue Valley (Medford, OR)...
According to Travelocity, Delta Airlines serves a flight to Salt Lake
City that connects to Pittsburgh,
and United connects to Pittsburgh in Denver, CO or San Francisco.
(They're currently showing the Delta connection as the
fastest and cheapest one, judging only from a random weekday
I selected (6:13 Medford to Pittsburgh.)
Of course, the specific day may have different options- I'm
getting a TYPICAL day.)
From Redding Municipal (Redding, CA)...
United does connections through San Francisco to Pittsburgh.
In both cases, there are other flights, where either they are
longer, more expensive, or offer more plane changes.
The ones I mentioned seem the best choices from those specific
airports to Pittsburgh.
==============
Is it really too long to drive to San Francisco?
Let's see.
A shuttle flight from Redmond to San Francisco is just over 1 hour.
A shuttle flight from Medford to San Francisco ranges from 1:15 to 1:30.
*checks*
That's about the same as a shuttle flight from NYC to Philadephia,
and a Greyhound bus for NYC to Philadelphia is 2:20.
Looks like maybe the distance to San Francisco may NOT be too far
to drive.
*checks*
I don't see a way to get from Yreka to San Francisco by bus or
train, so I see the options as follows:
A) drive to San Francisco, and catch a nonstop flight to Pittsburgh.
If the driving is manageable, that's the best choice.
B) Drive to Medford and catch a connecting flight to Pittsburgh.
C) Drive to Redding and catch a connecting flight to Pittsburgh.
Your discretion which one works BEST for you.

Sweet! Thanks! All of your posts have been incredibly helpful so far, but this one has been the best by far! I thoroughly appreciate all of your help, and while nothing is cast in bronze yet, I think that if I play my cards right (lol, cards mentioned in reply to a user named BlackJack...) and do the proper research, I should be able to persuade my parents to fund the majority of the trip. Again, thanks for all of your help. If you have anything further to contribute, please let me know!

permalinkYou just have to check on this. Twice now, it was nearly $100 cheaper to drive, once to Lansing and once to Toledo, to hop a plane.. which then flew back to Detroit then on to the final destination.... go figure that one out.
