The best part of that article people drinking it and noting that they are in a state of altered consciousness.
Well DUH, a 124-proof drink will do that to you!
I must try some.

ever get the impression that the author never reads the adjectives they put in news articles?

permalinkFrom what I've read, it's supposed to be diluted with sugar and ice water just before imbibing. The water makes some of the dissolved solids precipitate resulting in a cloudy beverage, not unlike ouzo. The sugar helps make the whole thing palatable.

The point is that the beverage contains mugwort & wormwood, thus tastes nasty and literally poisons you.

I thought absinthe makes the heart grow fronds.
Seeing as, you know, it has some hallucinogenic properties...

Ah yes, it's essentially made of distilled ethanol extract of mugwort/wormwood, and two other herbs.
Mugwort and wormwood have some hallucinogenic compounds, and are also the original source of the anti-malarial drug, artimensin. They all over the place, common perennial weeds most people overlook, often found growing in large patches amidst clumps goldenrod, ragweed, and other tall weedy plants.
They're from the family Asteraceae, which includes genera of many well-known flowers, such as chrysanthemums. One might note the pungent aroma of mum foliage, and that it has some similarities to mugwort aroma.
But, it contains thujone, a somewhat toxic monoterpene compound that acts as a GABA-A receptor antagonist, causing overactive muscle contractions leading to spasms and convulsions. It may also cause premature labor in pregnant women. As such, the plant should be used sparingly along with other plants containing significant amounts of the chemical: juniper, tansy, and sage. However, absinth, being distilled, has very little of it.
It has some coumarin and coumarin derivatives, which are precursors of anticoagulants like warfarin, so people with bleeding disorders should avoid it.
Consumption of the plant is also said to increase lucid dreaming, through the actions of several of its other chemical components.
This concludes the biomedical study for the evening. You're welcome! :3

Its about time that its back! Importing this stuff costs so much >.>....its almost not worth it....ALMOST...but that may just be me
- Login or register to post comments
permalinkIf you've been importing it,
don't lose the importer's contact information.
The stuff allowed to be sold in the US has negligible amounts
of the hallucinogens.
It's still 124 proof, but it won't make you see stuff.
Not that I'm willing to take anything that makes you hallucinate.
My life is surreal enough. It's not even shocking anymore for me
to be on vacation and think I see animal ears and tails on people
walking around.

Pfft, if you really want the hallucinogenic effects that much, mugwort and wormwood species grow pretty much everywhere across the country. The railroad tracks here in Philly have practially fields of it growing on the sides. It's related to chrysanthmums, actually, with very aromatic leaves.
Course, you risk liver failure from the thujone content of the raw plant...
Just make sure to write me into your will.

I like Absente actually. it's pretty sweet and mixes well but yea, it's not the real stuff. And actually literally every liquor store I know in my area in NY sells at least one brand of absenth; usually Lucid; Absente coming in second, and Tormentor is a little ahrder to find. Supposedly there's a fourth and I've heard rumor that American production will be starting up soon, all teh stuff currently available is imported from France.

It rather sounds like another day at the bar to me.

Of course! But then again I don't have your history with absenth, nor do I ever. I do pity you though, I mixed up a nice tall glass of absente a few weeks back... I'm sure yours was worse but I have an idea.

sadly the aforementioned drinks were not absinthe, just examples of drinks with destructive sounding names.
I haven't had the pleasure of trying the green fairy yet, though now that its easier to come by, I do intend to. I will (within reason) try about anything once.
EDIT - oops, misread the previous post
