We'll have a dining guide that is published along with the conbook and can be found in the membership bags that we give out.
Our attendees have said good things about Fernando's sandwich shop and the Steel City Diner, as seen in this pic:

permalinkLast year's City Guide, Pocket Reader and Program Guide are still up.
The Pocket Reader's the AC'07 schedule and the Program Guide is the '07 events.
Those could be useful if someone wanted an idea of what happened and when-
so long as they understood that the '08 schedule will be different, possibly RADICALLY
different.
The City Guide, however, won't need a lot of changes, unless a lot of stores,
restaurants, shops, etc, move.
You can download them as PDF files here:
http://www.anthrocon.org/schedule
At least until they get taken down- which will happen without warning at the discretion
of the staff, so I'd get to downloading them ASAP.
Personally, for places to eat, I'd remember the following:
A) the hotel restaurant is pricey, and has a breakfast buffet.
If you're going to really tuck in for all-you-can-eat, it might be worth your time,
like, say, the morning you leave. Otherwise, I'd skip the hotel restaurant.
B) Across the street from the Westin (directly across) is the Kwik-E-Mart.
You can get beverages from there, and ice from the ice machine on your floor.
Plus there's glasses in the room.
C) If you walk across the street (to the Kwik-E-Mart), make a left, follow the block
around the corner (past Tonic and whatever else), and then walk down about 1 1/2
blocks, you will come across three places to eat:
1-Fernando's, which is the now-famous sandwich shop which offers the AC Special
(Fernando's a hero due to what happened last year)
2-the Steel City Diner, which is the cheapest breakfast in the area I know of
(not counting some places under the hotel I'm hazy about with lighter fare)
3-the Golden something- a Chinese restaurant, which also has a buffet of some kind
At AC'06, there was a guy on the corner Friday broiling up burgers, but he wasn't
there all convention at AC'07.
There may be some other changes before the next con.

permalinkSince you're going to ask about Fernando and what happened last year,
I'll paste the reports.
Uncle Kage said this on his LJ: (7/12/07)

Oh I definately highly suggest the steel city diner. Not only is it super close to the convention centre, but it's cheap and incredibly good as well as filling. My goodness the portions are HUGE for such a little amount to pay.
There are loads of little places to eat around the centre as well, but some can be pricey. Might want to look into bringing some goodies from home as well to save on the moola.

One thing that I'd like to point out:
The city of Pittsburgh has, for the most part, really opened its arms to us. The eateries and establishments around the convention center are looking forward to us returning. Some establishments that don't normally open on the weekends are going to be open just because we are there and they know that WE bring in good business.
So please, visit some of the local restaurants and establishments. We've made a very positive impression on the city and local businesses. Let's continue to show our gratitude for their hospitality by being good customers and patrons. (and always remember to tip accordingly.)

permalinkIn that row nearby, the Golden Palace (palace?), the Chinese restaurant and
buffet, stayed open late Wednesday, July 4, for us.
A number of us early arrivals were looking for someplace to eat, and if that place
wasn't open, it would have been Vending Machine Special for us.
(Granted, service was slow, but they were understaffed, seeing as they expected
to be closed at that point, so I never complained. Good thing I wasn't
famished-but if I was, I would have ordered an appetizer.)
Before I left, I let one of them know that a lot more people were expected in town
for the next few days, and they might want to plan ahead..

I kept hearing about this famous Steel City diner, and now I'm really curious. I'd love to visit this place! Looks like that the business we've given them was just astronomical.
Overall, I think that the city of Pittsburgh has been really happy with the huge cashflow we brought into their economy. Positive atmosphere + large economy = Excellent vacation destination.

Are there any other good breakfast places nearby? I hate to gripe, but I ate there Sat. AM and it was so busy the service was slow, and frankly, their portions are too generous - their French toast was 3 slices, drowned in enough cinnamon sugar to kill three diabetics; I could only finish two of them
But this is still preferable to the hotel's $17 breakfast buffet
Also, while I'm here, are there any good places to get nachos? The hotel front desk said something about some sports bar on the east side of them, but I went looking for it and couldn't find it; I tried to find the Mexican place on 5th and Liberty and struck out there too
Maybe I'll get adventuresome and try the DLCC's chili fries - they looked like a load of food for a decent price, except that on Friday I have a gyro and fries for lunch, and I don't like eating fries thrice in one weekend
(I hit McD's on the way out Sunday night).

permalinkA) The map-grid with the Steel City, Fernando's, and the Golden Palace is H-3.
H-3 shows Bruegger's Bagels at 411 7th Avenue,
and the Smithfield Cafe at 639 Smithfield Street.
Both of those (plus Monte Cello's, 305 7th Avenue)
are thus local, and are listed at the least-pricey in the area.
B) There's some lighter fare in the Westin.
Go to the first floor, UNDER where the 2nd floor area we use is.
If you've no sense of direction, there's 2 banks of elevators in the Westin.
From the front door, the bank on the right serves all the hotel-rooms.
The bank on the left serves the 1st-3rd floors, and the hotel shop is there also.
Walk PAST those. You'll be in a corridor that turns right. You can buy some
really light stuff-which is why I don't know much about it. I bought a beverage.
C) The hotel has a cheaper buffet that is vegan or something-for $12, IIRC.
Granola, fruit, etc. Those of you who want all-you-can-eat grazing might find
that better. (Someone might like it, anyway.)
D) The big breakfast buffet, IMHO, is a good choice for the morning you're leaving,
or any morning you're truly famished. (Any OTHER time, I'd give it a pass.)
