That depends!

GENERAL hotel reservations will begin at 11:00 AM EST on Monday, February 3, 2014. We are aware (and are deeply apologetic) that this time is not the most convenient for everyone, but in our experience it is convenient for the majority of attendees. We will once again be using VisitPittsburgh's Housing Service as a one-stop source for hotel rooms. A non-refundable down payment equal to one night's room and tax will be charged to your credit card within two weeks of the time you make your reservation.

Hotel reservations for SUPERSPONSORS will begin at 11:00 AM EST on Friday, January 31, 2014. An email with instructions will be sent out to all pre-registered supersponsors 24 hours prior to that time, and a second will be sent out the following day to anyone who may have registered (or upgraded) as a supersponsor in the ensuing days.

WESTIN SUITE reservations will be taken starting in the first full week of January, 2014. Those must be requested directly from anthrocon.org. Further instructions will be published on this site at that time.

Please visit our HOTEL FAQ page where you can find the answers to most of the frequently-asked questions we get.

Yep, most hotel rates are up. Parking should stay the same this year assuming council doesn't raise rates for the garages.

Not as limited, but still limited. The Hampton is not a very big hotel.

Uncle Kage:

Quote:
Actually, the Doubletree also offers suites at a (greatly) reduced rate for us. But indeed, the other hotels do not have a discount for suites.
Information on obtaining suites at the Westin will be published here within the next few weeks. Those are handled directly through the convention due to the demand. Suites will be available at all other hotels as soon as we open hotel reservations.

www.anthrocon.org/node/16577/suites-which-hotelsopinions

So, to head off any followup questions on the subject,

suites in the Westin will be as detailed in the first post.

Suites in any other hotel with AC room blocks will be handled as normal rooms for that hotel
concerning when you can book them, how to book them, and so on.

Last year I went for a Corner Suite at the Westin and the Sitting Room ended up being my "private" fursuit maintenance/changing and sleeping room....

....lets see, I paid for all 6 nights for the Corner Suite but the other two got the bedroom & bed while I slept in the other room with an air mattress....hmm.

If I remember from past years there is no difference for sponsors and non-sponsors in conserns to the suites. It still has to be verified through the chairman and the westin.

Speaking of which, when do we start sending in the requests? Ready to get this party started.

Yes, if I remember correctly it ran almost like a lottery to get a suit or first come first serve correct? I know you had to provide a pre reg number to participate, when they choose who gets a suite though will it be that week and pay the first night or was it that they waited until later in the month to choose them? Just planning on how to run my pays to be sure the money is there Smiling

Is it true that you have to pre-register to reserve a room at the Westin?

If so does it matter what membership you pre-register with?

AFAIK, pre-registration for the con is not required to get a room.

Only Supersponsorship matters in getting a room.  They are allowed to register two or three days early.  Everyone else can register on Feb. 3, 2014, regardless of membership level.

IIRC the reservation system for everybody (not just supersponsors) requested your badge number (thus implying needing pre-reg), but it was an optional field. IDK whether they'll change that for this year (and didn't look through the archives to see the latest discussion results).

See Uncle Kage's reply under http://www.anthrocon.org/node/16340/when-will-hotel-reservations-be-possible-ac-2014   answer 5.  He says that the field will be there (for embership number), but won't be used unless they can work the bugs out.

I beat the rush and forfeit the discount and got a room already.  I want to be close so I don't have to drive across the city to get there after the rooms fill up on the opening day of reservatios.

You probably paid something like double the convention rate.
For that, you got a guaranteed room at the Westin.
(If it was for another hotel, this made no sense at all.)

Granted, the first 24 hours sees a rush of reservations.
The Courtyard (few rooms, all in demand) goes first,
and the Westin fills within 36-48 hours, with the quad rooms
going, generally, the first 24 hours.

As for the rest of the hotels, that varies. The Hampton will
fill faster due to the small number of rooms. All the other
hotels will have rooms for more than a month. The Omni, the
Doubletree, the Marriott City Center and the Wyndham will all
have vacancies for a few months as people fill in the blocks.

If you weren't desperate for a room at the Courtyard or the
Westin, it probably made no sense to pay so much for the
room now. And it's easy walking distance for all the hotels
except the Wyndham.

doesn't matter.  I can afford it, but I wanted a guaranteed room.  I know I'd miss the rush and get screwed anyway.  It will be my first time going along with two other friends that have never been either.  I've never even been near PA.

It depends on whether you want to pay $175 per night or $350.   (estimate after taxes.)

Since you double-posted, this time we'll double-answer.

If you really don't care, you can contact the hotel and
make a reservation now for their normal rate. That
should be about double what the rest of us pay.

As far as AnthroCon is concerned, the reservations
(the room blocks) should open end of January/beginning
of February (depending on what is specified.) There
will be announcements and a countdown as the date and
time approaches. There should be over 1000 rooms across
all the hotels, and they will fill up either
immediately, or over the coming months (depending on
demand for the hotel and the type of room.)

Also remember that AC gets credit for all the reservations
done in their room block. If you reserve outside that,
then you're paying more AND AC isn't getting acknowledged
for bringing you there.

No, parking fees are separate from the room charge at the Westin, and we do not get a discount.

If you want to go "cheap" that can be done by staying at a place a few miles outside of the DLCC, but part of the fun can be found staying at one of the hotels that are walking distance and close enough that even in the hotel, you feel like it is part of the convention....the Westin is the best for that. It can cost you around $140 per night, but that is the Con' rate and around half what it would have cost and it can be split with a friend or two staying in the same room with you.

This will be you first Anthrocon and I'm sure you will have a great time. Going by your location in your profile, DLCC would be around 400 miles from the southwest part of CT (like Greenwich) and around 475 miles say from Hartford CT to Pittsburgh PA.

To get a hotel rate as low as Anthrocon's, you'll have to stay a bit far away, and any savings will likely be eaten up in taxi/transit/parking charges.

Usually the lower rate are the doubletree, marriot and omni to be within city limit and have that ac discount price, I would watch those ones for when prices go up on the hotels page. Last year they were well priced, we stayed in the marriot and it was a nice hotel and ac got a good rate with them

on hotels, I agree with the rest of the folks here on staying as near as can be to the con as possible.

Now within those paramaters, if your going to try to be as frugal as can be, finding ultimate cheapest rate you can there is one trick I used the past couple years, Priceline. the only hotels 3 stars and up that appear on the name your own price option when selecting the downtown zone(Marriott, Doubletree, Westin(once got it for the sunday night when i decided to stay an extra), The renisance(gorgeous hotel, though with highly limited numbers of outlets), and i think the omini as well can be gotten through price line) The past two years i've gotten the marriot this way for roughly 10-15 bucks less a night than the con rate(And a bit more on the last day if your going to play the two seperate hotel shell game), I'd still sugjest against it for a few reasons, one that you don't have control over the hotel, while the marriott is quite nice its at the edge of the easy walkable zone IMHO, Secondly you pay the whole fee right up front, so if things change your out the whole amount rather than just the normal one night down payment, a third thing about it is you've gotta play the guessing game on it for a while, trying every day till you score something,  Its a headache and honestly I'd only do it again if I was unable to snatch a westin room this year.

Certainly encourage folks to go through the more normal methods of snagging a hotel room though, life's alot easier that way

Mua-ha-ha-ha.... totally worth the upgrade, though it'll be interesting to see how I can swing a hotel reservation in the middle of my work shift.

I <3 my favorite hotel.

I have a question for super sponsoring, if I upgrade and somehow miss the chance for early booking a room on the Friday is there a limited number of rooms for super sponsors or just whatever is at the hotel?

(As the earliest I can book under super sponsor is Friday afternoon as booking a room on a cell phone isn't the easiest thing)

You must upgrade before we open the hotel reservations for supersponsors on January 31.  I may be able to check after that to see if any upgrades have come through in the days after that, but there are no guarantees.

There are not any set number of rooms specifically reserved for Supersponsors. The "perk" is that Supersponsors get a 72 hour first crack at all Hotels that Anthrocon has arranged for special Convention rates for reservations. After that 72 hours, the reservation system is open to anyone.

If you upgrade to Supersponsor and receive the email back in time on instructions and the link to make reservations before February 3rd, then you can take advantage of this perk.

Historically, the Anthrocon room rate has been available for three days before and three days after the official dates of the con.  So, if it was Tuesday through Tuesday last year, it will probably be the same this year as well.

IIRC, the rates will posted shortly before room registration opens.  They will definitely be posted by 1/31, since Supersponsor room registration opens then.

One major hint:  when the rates are posted, there will be two numbers.  One will just be the room cost per night and then another in parentheses.  That is $150 ($165).  (Made up numbers.)  The first number is the official price, but the second is the cost per night with the taxes included.  That will be the amount your credit card will be charged.  (It won't include the pennies, but the dollar part will be accurate.)  That is the number you should use to estimate the real room cost.
