Remember the cartoon film Animalympics which was shown at the 2004 Anthrocon
("Summer Games")? This was a 1980 release; originally a 30 minute version
called "Winter Games" was aired on NBC in 1979, and
a sequel, "Summer Games", was to air the following year but never did,
due to the boycott of the Olympics by several countries following Russia's
invasion of Afghanistan. Animals compete in an Olympiad!

The two films were combined into Animalmpics but it wasn't released
theatrically due to the failure to find a distributor. It did air on cable
and
was issued on video. Tough to find now. Voices included Billy Crystal,
Gilda Radner, and Harry Shearer; celebrities lampooned included
ABC's Keith Jackson, Barbara Walters, and Howard Cosell. One
character--like, a California otter dude, was named Dean Wilson
(think Jan and DEAN and Brian WILSON)...

"It became one of the most popular shows with the Furry/ morph/anthro/funny animal interest internet group."

There are some related items on the Web,
including some clips via youtube

"Now that we made it, we made it to the top..." Do a search for Animalympics
at youtube to find a few more. Music by Graham Gouldman of 10cc ("I'm Not In
Love", "The Things We Do For Love",
"Rubber Bullets').

Copies of the Animalympics video (both authentic VHS and bootleg DVD) go up for bid fairly often on eBay, and occasionally a seller will offer the (vinyl) soundtrack album.

I suppose it's OK to reveal now, we tried our damnedest to contact the director of Animalympics, Steve Lisberger, to invite him as a guest in 2004, but no luck. I was hoping he might have a "director's cut" of the original versions.

Yes, I can believe it'll show up in places like that.

It was fun watching the movie in the Zoo--we even had milk and cookies
beforehand, IIRC. Perhaps at a future Con a film like that could be screened on the BIG screen in the main ballroom. Or play a clip from
it (even off web via YouTube) during the masquerade, just to entertain
us for a few minutes and give a little more variety to the variety show!
Thanks for the effort in trying to get Lisberger to be a guest/get
director's cut!

I actually have a copy (VHS) of that movie. I remember seeing it around 1986-1988 or so...can't quite remember the year. But I remember LOVING the movie! Finally snagged a copy off eBay a few years back. Laughing out loud

I taped it in the late 80s or so, and brought my copy to AC06, but there was no opportunity to show it Sad I could bring it in 07 if there was the interest and ability to show it - (hopefully it wouldn't get played so much my 15+ year old tape would wear out Sad

To follow up on the OP, see the lyrics from the LP (with art!) at #1 and #2
