Do people wear their badges while out of suit and going out to eat and the like?

Yes, long subject line, I know. Really, didn't know how else to shorten it. But, watching some videos, I've seen a lot of fursuiters with quite a few badges hanging from their necks and a tag on their ears. When they're out of suit to say, go out to grab some food or do whatever, do they generally wear those badges on them still to help others identify them out of suit? I mean, I'm sure having your registration badge is a must to help you walk in and out of the DLCC and Westin but I'm not sure what those other badges would be. So, any insight would be great. |

I wear all my badges (well, all the ones I can fit on my lanyard and shirt) everywhere I go, in or out of suit or convention.

permalinkIt depends. If you're leaving the hotel/DLCC and going into the city, it's generally a good idea to stow the badge(s). They tend to identify you as an out-of-towner with lots of moolah, and can draw unsavory attention to you.
If you're just going out of suit in the convention space, however, then you're okay either way. Most folks wear the con badge and ancillary badges on the same lanyard, or clipped together, etc. so the whole bundle stays together as a unit, in or out of suit.

A number of people have custom badges made containing their name and a picture. Take a look at http://www.graphxpress.com/gall2.htm for an example badges done by Jim Groat. These badges are worn for others to look at and to identify the furry to others. A number of people also have a number of buttons containing various slogans and mottos. Some people will also wear badges from prior conventions just to show where they've been. I currently have about six Anthrocon badges and might wear them to show that I've been around for a while.

And if you want to get one or more custom badges, folks in the Dealers Room and Artists Alley will be selling them throughout the convention.

permalinkI noticed that a couple of con goers were wearing this vertical blue L.E.D. tag that scrolled a name or something down it. Can I get those there or are those things ordered off a website somewhere?

permalinkSomething like that, however, the one I saw was hanging from the person's neck by a lanyard, and was sticking vertically, not horizontally. It was also the size of a fairly big marker. Like a big pen drive.

They sometimes have things like that in the dealer room. Of course, when you see somebody wearing one that looks interesting, you can always ask them where they got it. You can also try places like Spencer's, Brookstone, Sharper Image, etc. Sometime you see them, sometimes you don't. It always seems like I see them everywhere until I actually try to buy one, at which time they vanish.

Actually, you need to wear your convention badge (the official one) anytime you are in convention space. Once you go outside, it is indeed a good idea to tuck it away in a pocket.
The exception is if you are going to one of the nearby restaurants such as Fernando's or the Steel City Diner. They like seeing Anthrocon badges there, and they are just across the street.

permalinkI think I'll mostly be spending my time around the DLCC, Westin, and some nearby restaurants that have been listed on the sidebar menus. I was mostly curious about it when I'd be going out to eat and wearing the badges. Now I know.

By the way: Even though many con badges are laminated or pouched, while you are actually eating it's a good idea to remove them. Tomato sauce accidentally dripped on artwork, is a bad idea.

Please let me elaborate on why you may not wish to wear your convention badge outside the convention center.
You will be a visitor in the downtown section of a large city. While the gracious city of Pittsburgh has really opened its arms and welcomed us like no other lcoation truly has...there are still those individuals who would prey on visitors. Your convention badge quickly identifies you as someone not from the area..and possibly holding an amount of cash or some type of valuable (such as a cell phone) on your person. You are making yourself a target.
There is an additional danger. Many folks commission wonderful custom con badges. These are truly original works of art in their own right. By wearing them outside, you can run the risk of them being damaged or lost due to a faulty clip or inclement weather. The loss of an original piece of artwork is usually fairly difficult on an individual. So it may be best to not wear them outside. If a badge falls off inside the convention space, it could very well (and frequently is) turned into convention security and can be returned to the rightful owner. If it's lost outside, it may be gone forever.
Just a few words to the wise.

permalinkThanks, KP.
So, if I were to de-suit so I could go grab a bite to eat at Fernando's or Steel City Diner, would it be for the best to hide the badges inside my pockets until I walk into the restaurant and then put them back on? Uncle Kage did mention that they like seeing con goers in their establishment and since they are directly across the street.

permalinkThose establishments are pretty close to the hotel, and they don't stay open after dusk anyway, so walking there in full con-goer regalia generally isn't as big a deal.
But hey, we can't tell you everything you should do in advance. The "don't wear badges outside the hotel/DLCC" bit is just a rule of thumb. When you're actually in Pittsburgh, you'll keep that in mind, but you'll have to judge for yourself whether things look safe or not in the specific situations you're in.
There's always some degree of "playing it by ear" when you go to an event like this. Don't sweat the details so much---you'll know what to do

The Rule of Thumb is this: "Convention Identification loses its cool outside of the convention."
Simply put, your excellent badges with wonderful art stop being impressive and start looking dorky, outside of the hotels and convention center. Now. you mention Fernando's and the Steel City Diner, and there are a few other establishments which have embraced Anthrocon fully and support us. You can reasonably view those as extensions of the convention, and wear badges there.. and perhaps in transit, as they're close walks. But if you're walking a block or two, or from the Omni to the Westin/DLCC.. I'd take them off.

I wore my collar, badges, and tail just about everywhere I went last year, and not a soul gave me a real second glance or any trouble about it. I figure if you walk around acting like it's no big deal, then no one else will think of it as a big deal.

permalinkHeh, it's alright, I greatly appreciate everyone's suggestions. I've been through enough "security" detail growing up in Russia, so I was taught to view my surroundings. Vladivostok was a wonderful ground during the '80s. *L*
I just ask because I figured it'd be nice for the Steel City Diner or Fernando's to see that another AC faithful has shown up to eat at their establishment.
BTW, IronWolf, I like your "signature tag". Very funny.

My suggestion is that, as a lot of con-goers who are not suited have small messanger bags with them, stow your tags in there for walks around the city unless you're going into one of the local joints that like to tags. It saves on damage and lessens the risk of losing your pass into the con.
If you don't want to stow them...get a reallllly trusty lanyard and clips before attending the con to secure them in the weather/walking.
