Charity Suggestions - 2008 Edition

The Anthrocon Board will soon be deciding on the Charity to support for 2008. If you know of a charitable organization that you would like to recommend be added to the current candidate list, please suggest it here within the next few weeks. Criteria for candidacy: |

Animal Friends or Animal Rescue League of Western Pennslyvania are both wonderful organizations dedicated to saving homeless animals.
ARL is located right in Pittsburgh while Animal Friends is in or around Sewickley.
I'm pretty sure they are both 501 but I'll get more information for you while I'm at work today.
I believe Animal Friends even had a booth in the dealer den last year.

You'll be happy to know that Animal Friends was our charity this past year (2007).
I don't know how I missed the Animal Rescue League, but it's now been added to the candidate list.

Western Pennsylvania Conservancy might work. http://www.wpconline.org/ Lots of land management and habitat preservation, but they also have programs to help with peregrine recovery and conserving rattlesnakes. (reptiles need love too!) They have a tower cam set up for two peregrine nests in downtown Pittsburgh:

Plus community gardens and greenspaces to green up the city and provide habitat for urban wildlife.
Since Anthrocon is also very focused on art, WPC also happens to manage Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Water. I suspect there's a lot of furries that wish they could live in that sort of house.
I can't find whether they're a 501(c)3 or not on website. Keep running into "email us for more complete financial details." Their headquarters is in Pittsburgh.
Another option is the National Aviary in Pittsburgh. All kinds of birds from around the world. They support research and conservation of various species, including peregrine falcons. They work together with the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy on that project. http://www.aviary.org/
I suspect the furs that like birding would be all over this one.

The Western PA Conservancy does appear to be a 501(c)3 according to GuideStar: http://www.guidestar.org/pqShowGsReport.do?partner=justgive&npoId=436786
While the WPC appears to be significantly land, wilderness, and ecosystem oriented, they do have some animal-related projects. I'll add them to our list of candidates.
