What to Expect When Hotels Open on Monday?
Hi everyone, this is your friendly webmaster leopard here!
I'm sure there are lots of questions about what will happen when hotels open on Monday morning, and I'd like to go cover some of them in this post.
10 AM, Monday
Around this time, I will place the website into read-only mode. Any attempt to load a page from our website will instead show our hotel countdown page. The current countdown page can be seen here. The purpose behind the countdown page is to keep the website from falling over under the insane crush of traffic which is expected to hit at 11 AM. This level of traffic is greater than even during the convention itself.
11 AM, Monday
The hotel page goes live. This is an automated process handled by PHP code on the server side and requires no manual intervention on my part. This is important because with potentially thousands of inbound connections, my SSH connection may not be very responsive.
11:30 AM, Monday
If traffic levels last year were any indication, things usually calm down within 30 minutes. When that happens, I'll restore the regular version of the website and things will be back to normal here.
Now that I got a room, what do I do with it?
If you need roommates, we have room share forums for that.
But what if things go terribly wrong?
We hope this doesn't happen. But if it does, and our website completely falls over from the load and becomes unavailable, we have a backup plan. Also at 11 AM on Monday we will be posting the hotel reservations link to all of our social media presences. Here is the list:
- Twitter: http://twitter.com/Anthrocon
- Our Facebook Page: http://www.facebook.com/Anthrocon
- Our Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/49844448265/

If you're reading this before Monday, why not take the opportunity to bookmark these links?

Brace yourselves, furmageddon is coming!
It's the fur-fect storm!
I happened to check the countdown page in time to set up to get this screenshot:
Let me add in additional notes:
Sometime between 11:01 and 12:00: Westin Double/Double rooms will sell out.
Sometimes before the end of the day: All Westin rooms will sell out. Potentially the Hampton, Doubletree, or Omni will sell out.
This is not "Things going terribly wrong"; this is the pace we have when 5,000+ attendees need hotel rooms.
What time does room reservations open for those that are supersponsored though? I dont want to end up not having a room for myself and a couple of close friends like last year.
Room reservations opened on Friday the 30th for Supersponsors. If you registered as a Supersponsor before 9pm EST Thursday the 29th, you should already have received an email with instructions.
If you have registered as a Supersponsor since then... I'm not certain what happens, actually.
Friday the 31st* and registered before 9PM EST Thursday, January 30th
-runs off before Chef throws cooking utensils at me-
Dangit, since when does January have a 31st?
Room registration has ALREADY opened for Supersponsors. You shoild have received an email on Friday from Samuel Conway. Check your junk email. If it isn't there, send a private message to Unclekage or Sonicgod/Sonicgott ASAP!
Sorry XD I found the e-mail in my junk folder. I was able to get my room and stuff so all is good. Thanks all who gave responses ^^
Can I book a room with a debit card, instead of a credit card?
If your debit card has the Mastercard or Visa logo, it should work the same as a credit card reserving a room through the Passkey system..
Remember that the hotel may put a hold on your debit card in excess of the room costs and you may not have access to your cash in either your checking, savings or other account is is linked to. I found it best to use one credit card to book my room with enough available credit to cover anything extra like room service, long distance phone calls or the like, then have another card to use for other expenses, purchases, food, etc.
You have a great idea for our 2014 Fursuit Games? Post your thoughts and comments here!
The Fursuit Track team is looking for panelists. If you have any ideas/suggestions, click here!
if you only have a debit card to reserve your room take out enough money for spending leavingenough in your account to cover your stay. that way you dont have to worry about a hold keeping you from usin your card.
Reserving a room should be possible using any browser right? Like I am using firefox.
I used Firefox and had no problem when booking (SuperSponsor)
We cannot make guarantees. The folks at VisitPittsburgh have tested the system under a variety of browsers and on several mobile devices and have not encountered any problems. So we are going to hope for the best.
