tell me if i'm wrong your european? Generally hostels are almost impossible to find in the state save around the appalchian trail. but the good thing is in January Giza will start the share a room forum and that will help you save on room cost big time so just be patient and give it another month. I'm sure then some friendly fur will be moore than willing to split the room cost with you.

I'm actually Australian. The other thing is that the whole share room thing doesn't sit right with me, cause (no offense), you never know what kinda people there are on the net. I'd rather a cheap room somewhere by myself. I'm looking forward to meeting new people at the Con, but I wouldn't feel safe sharing a room with people I have never met face-to-face before, you know?

Ah sorry for jumping to conclusions. I lived in europe for a few years and thats the only place I've seen hostels. unfortanately like I said there are no real hostels in the states. I understand what you mean when you say about sharing the room with a stranger I had my own room reserved last year for the same reason but was unable to attend unfortanately. This year I figured screw it share a room if for no other reason than I don't want to go alone and it may help improve my experiance. But to each his own I'm not trying to chnge your mind just sharing my pov.

I am crying right now, because I know that somewhere, SOMEWHERE, someone in the US is reading this and saying, "but isn't Australia in Europe?"

[groans] Aww, mate. Don't I know it? I get that from net friends overseas all the time:
"Don't you mean Austria?" (there is no rolling eyes smilely big enough)

Ahh, Australia! Where everybody waltzes with Matilda on the banks of the Beautiful Blue Danube while the shuttle docks.... right?
Runs away!

permalinkThat's totally understandable-my first AnthroCon, I had a room to myself.
The next year, I planned well in advance, and began communicating with a number of
possible attendees, and became friends with one whom I roomed with. It worked out so
well that we've roomed together the last few years, and stay in touch all year between
the cons.
So, yes, caution is good, there's plenty of nuts, and many of us are nutty in a good way
or not in a good way. However, I think there's a LOT fewer "horror stories" of
roomies than there are "happy endings" with roomies. Just something to consider.

Thats cool. I'll keep a ear out in case I change my mind, but maybe if someone could tell me of some cheaper places around. $125 a night is pretty steep for one person.

A few comments:
1) Over the years, I've roomed with people who I had not met in person before. I found that if I got to know folks online first, that helped LOTS, insofar as cutting down on surprises. (For example, I roomed with a smoker one year, but because he informed me in advance, I made sure to get a room with a balcony so he could go out and smoke.)
2) Networking networking networking! With the con being 7 months away, now is the time to start asking your friends (and their friends) if anyone else is going to the con. You might just find someone that someone you know knows who is attending.
3) Roomshare forum. Yep, that'll be up in January. See my previous comment about networking.
4) On the subject of cheaper hotels in the area, I feel obligated to point out that Anthrocon's continued existence is contingent on filling our room block in the Westin and OMNI hotels. The way convention business models work here in the US is that conventions such as ours agree to give the hotel(s) a certain number of roomnights, and in return, the hotel provides its function rooms (and guest rooms) at a steep discount. In the event that we ever fail to meet our contracted room block, we are required to make up the difference in revenue to the hotel. Such an event would be a huge hit on our budget, and place the future of the convention in jeopardy.

permalinkI've done the backpacking-in-Europe thing before, staying in hostels along the way. I never came across any that offered single-bed rooms; it ranged anywhere between three and ten. Do Australian hostels do the one-bed thing?
Anyway, what the other folks above said. If you're really tight on funds, you can try to "overbook" a room, to split the costs five or six (or more) ways. For that, you need to agree beforehand on who's sleeping on the floor, and you have to be careful that the hotel doesn't find out that there are more than four people in the room. (The extra folks can't have their own room key, for example, nor can they deal directly with the hotel staff.)

I'll remind posters that the hotel staff DOES in fact check up on this forum, especially but not limited to Jamie, the convention services rep.
Not to mention that the AC staff themselves do have a habit of checking each and every thread for things they may have to reply to.

Wouldn't staying at a Hostel be the same as sharing a room with strangers in the hotel? If I remember correctly, Hostels are like dorms that you share with any number of people that you more than likely don't know. I'd say just wait for the room share forum to open up and try to find a roommate or two there

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll keep my patience till the forum is out. And in Aus, yeah, you can get single rooms at hostels. Guess it's not the same in the US. Ah, well (shrugs).

permalinkLook at it this way -
The way the Dollar goes, room prices are just getting lower and lower.
I'd bet by the time June comes, you could pay for it using Lindens...
