I'm sure that the answer to my question is yes, however I'm still going to ask. Do a few furries (specifically suiters) show up a day or so earlier than the Con and just walk around in the hotel in their suits? I plan on coming up there a day earlier (on Wednesday) to beat the "rush" and to also just mingle around. I watched a couple of BBF's videos and saw that apparently some do. However, I'd just like to confirm. Do other suiters arrive a day early to kick start their vacation? I think it'd be cool to not worry about the events and just greet around. |

I have no clue but I do know that I am planning on getting to my hotel a day early. I'm sure others do as well. It just makes sense. You get out of whatever transportation you used, your groggy from the long trip, and just feel like crashing. That is how I feel anyway. I want a good nights sleep before the con starts.

permalinkIt's only a 5 hour drive for me. And, believe me, 5 hours is nothing. Now, driving 24 hours nearly halfway across the mainland in 2 sittings, that's another story.
I just want to start my fun 1 day early.

That is how long my drive will be. I'm either going to drive or take the train down. It would be my longest trip driving alone.

It's amazing that for such a small percentage, I seem to encounter fursuiters quite often at Anthrocon.
Soon I will be a full-fledged one myself, and add to the great population of furry critters. ^^

Hello Shy Wolf, I'm planning on getting there on Wednesday. I'll have my fursuit in time for the Con. I'll be getting it in April or May. It will be my first con. It takes a 5 hour drive from where I live also. If you want to take pics or hang out, I'm cool with that. I'm also a wolf, my colors are mostly black with some silver in certain spots. Hence the name of Raider (my fav. football team, even tho they stink). -Raider.

permalinkSounds like a plan. Just working out a few details to ensure everything goes smoothly. Once they're ironed out, I'll be more stoked.

There were people there as easly as Tuesday last year. I myself will be arriving late Tuesday night so that I can open up the Operations Office on Wednesday morning.
If you're arriving early and looking for something to do, why not volunteer? Service guarantees citizenship! Volunteering enough hours gets you a free t-shirt and free admission to the following year's convention.

permalinkI'm not wanting to volunteer at this time. This is the first [read: real] vacation I've had in.....a long time, and I want to get a jumpstart on it. I want to just arrive early, put on my suit and then go down into the lobby and walk around. Beat the rush that probably happens on the day of the Con. Kind of like going into the calm of the storm. See what I'm getting at?

I planning on getting there a day early to meet up with a net friend before we head off the Con the next day. Travelling a long way, you really just need some time to chill (and get over Jet Lag
).

permalinkI got in a day early for AC'07. That's pretty much what it's like---lots of furs hanging around in the Westin lobby, some in fursuit, new arrivals walking in constantly with suitcases in tow, BigBlueFox poking around from time to time with his videocamera, random "you just had to be there" fursuiter hijinks....
It's a fun, low-key way to meet/greet/socialize and ramp up to the events of the convention proper. For those who can afford the time and the extra night, I highly recommend it. (It sure is a heck of a lot more fun than an extra day after the con
)

permalinkIt is my opinion-backed up by nothing except my eyeballs glancing around
last year- that maybe 10% of attendees (or even 15%) arrive by Wednesday
evening-which is when I arrive. Up to 15% of whoever's in will probably
have fursuits, if they match statistics typically for the entire con.
Many of those will wear them early. So, I'd guess a handful, with access
to the hotel but not the convention center. (This will make them easier
to find, for you.)
THURSDAY has REGISTRATION and that's it for OFFICIAL events.
And if you do the smart thing and pre-register, that will put you on
a VERY fast line instead of a VERY long line. So, Thursday is generally
a BIG day to not worry about events. That's why the Zoo (right by
registration) is open by Thursday morning, and is a good place to meet
up with people. It's better than the hotel lobby, which the hotel
actually needs to use-imagine that! So, I recommend the Zoo and the
messageboard NEAR the Zoo for unofficial activities and hanging out.
Saturday morning is when it all gets busy for the attendees.

Actually, it's way more than 15% of people who show up on Wednesday. As per our post-con survey, which was completed by 259 individuals, the arrival dates for the 2007 convention were:
Tuesday: 20 (7%)
Wednesday: 77 (29%)
Thursday: 135 (52%)
Friday: 20 (7%)
Saturday: 2 (0.7%)
Sunday: 2 (0.7%)
Of course, Wednesday was July 4th, a national Holiday. It'll be interesting to see how percentages change this coming year.

permalinkThursday isn't IMMEDIATELY followed by Saturday?
I have a defective calendar!
Obviously I was typing too fast before.
Thursday's official events are basically Registration.
Friday and Saturday are the busiest convention days.
Sunday's schedule has some events, but generally not
as many as Friday and Saturday.
(Generally, I RUN a Friday event, but I was typing "Saturday"
when thinking of it. Funny how that happens...)

Pre-registration is the path to victory. It starts earlier, the lines are shorter, and it costs less.

permalinkActually, I already have my eyes set on SuperSponsorship and if my friend is still able to make it (who's currently in Australia hauling oil), I'll be getting him a SuperSponsorship, as well.
Quick question: The private registration room, is that accessible on Thursday and afterwards, or earlier than that?

If this year will be in line with years previous, and I expect that it will be, it will be open Thursday. Sponsor/Super-Sponsor typically opens first, followed shortly thereafter by regular registration, followed by new registration. As business demands, registrations are condensed towards new registration- usually Thursday is the only day a sepearate Sponsor/Supersponsor room is held, and then after Friday noon all registration is from a central location.
Opening registration on Wednesday has been bandied about, but generally there's so much work to do Wednesday- stuffing con bags, setting up computer equipment, etc- that it is logistically difficult, and not likely to occur.

Last year was my first AC and it was a blast. We (my party o' 5) showed up late Thursday and thanks to pre-reg...we were through the line within about 2 minutes (1 minute to find the right room, the other to pull out all the info needed) Though things are slow Thursday night/Friday morning...it's still a great time to meet and greet and see everyone (suits or not).
Showing early just seems to be a great way to start--you get your bearings and are well-rested (theoretically) for the start of the con.

permalinkMy fiance and I are going to be there at LEAST a day early - maybe more. We have a nearly 12 hour drive to get down there so we wanted a day to get some good rest and some good food before the party started! :3 plus it would be awesome to meet some awesome people and get some friends before the con.

This'll be my first con and I'm a fursuiter, at least I'll be one by that time comes. I'll be there on Wednesday. A 5 hour drive from where I live. I'll be a black and silver wolf. I might be wearing a Raiders football jersey, it depends on how hot it will be. I'm sorry, it was a long day. I didn't realize that I already commented on this question. Sorry if you read something similar twice.

at about 7-8AM wednesday morning, I arrive and get into my room(I usually arrange for early checkin with the hotel). from there, I will likely do a number of odd things including just hanging out, or maybe fursuiting. I dont think ill do a lot of suiting, because mine is hard to see in, but im sure ill slip in and occupy myself for a little while and still be able to find some other fun things to do wednesday, including getting in a little bit of volunteer time.

Both my friend and I probably won't be walking in the door until 2PM. Of course by then, we'd probably be either at each other's throats, wired up from Pixie sticks and Pepsi, or as soon as we walk into The Westin Hotel, we crash to the floor. xD

I'm torn as to what i should do.? i live like a half hour away so driving every day is no problem. but it sounds like getting a hotel room would be way easier, then again i have to concider my financial aspect of it. i have no clue how much loot i'll have.
it'll be my first con so i don't really know much of anything except the infinate wizdom i've been learning here.
Do they have a place to suit up?(other than a bathroom)? cause it would be nice not suiting up in the parking lot. if not i can manage.
and if you don't have a hotel room how or where do i meet people early if i was ganna head out wed or thurs?
haha i need a friggin mentor. i am lost. or maybe even a lost cause..

permalinkYes, it would be "way easier."
If you need a place to "operate from" for the convention, that's what you need. If you
don't need to SLEEP there, you may be able to work something out with a few friends.
(If one friend wanted to use a room to change and leave a fursuit, but not sleep there,
I'd be a lot more open-minded about renting them space..)
Preregister, rent a room if you need one, or share one with people you can trust.
Find the things on the schedule you want to do, and do some of them. Don't forget to
allow time to rest, and eat.
The official suiting up places are known as "hotel rooms."
How were you going to be meeting people in your hotel room? Were they going to be sent
up like room service?
I know "the Zoo" is open early Thursday. Before Thursday, I'm not sure, but there's
somewhere over a hundred (possibly hundreds) of furries around the hotel. I spotted
plenty in the lobby Wed evening. Of course, AC will have furries moving through
operations all of Wednesday, and they will need HELP setting everything up. I've heard
volunteering is a GREAT way to meet furries.
You need a little practice, a little experience. After your first con, it comes a lot
easier.

As for suiting up, we have two rooms known as "Headless Lounges." One is located in the convention center, and one is in the Westin hotel. They are kept quite cool and stocked with water, extra-long straws, and fans (though last year we had a few break -- need to get some more).
- Login or register to post comments
permalinkI thought the Headless Lounges are specifically for cooling down fursuiters.
Are they also available for use to change INTO or OUT OF a fursuit?
If so, aren't there limits, since some people might be wearing, say, a fursuit and
jockey shorts or something? The Standards say people have to follow normal
public dress codes in all the public areas, so I take it that anyone in the
Fursuit Lounge (which counts as a public area of the convention) need to do
so as well- thus, you can change in and out of fursuit, but not undress to a
publickly-unacceptable degree to do so. Is that how it goes officially?
(If not, may I recommend it?)

In the past, we have relied on people's common sense. There are some folks who have carried their suits into the Headless Lounge and changed there. Thus far we've not had any complaints.

permalinkI have booked the hotel from the 24th June 08 to the 30th June 08. Id like to get my feet first and take in what Pittsburgh has to offer, Im contemplating extending another week onto that for the second week of my holiday. Ill be 24 on July 3rd 2008, Id like to visit Canada or somewhere relaxing. If I had the choice of an extended Furry Frolics second week after AC of my vacation, id take that instead! It will be my first visit to the states & the AC.
If anyone is interested, I could do with a lift from the airport *nudge*

permalinkWell, it's still a little too early to decide on ride accommodations. Wait until it draws closer and the "Need a Ride/Need a Room" forum sections open up.
Otherwise, I hear hitch-hiking still flies in the U.S.

Now that I have Twitter working, I plan on doing updates to it from my cellphone during the con, so that people can more easily find me/what I'm doing.
It works in reverse, too -- if you get on Twitter and "follow" another person, you can have updates sent straight to your cellphone whenever that person updates their status.
At any rate, Twitter is an interesting service, and worth looking into before next year's con.
