Here's what I have handy.
The last official report on Fernando was Uncle Kage's report 7/27/07.
http://www.anthrocon.org/node/1506
"I'm in Pittsburgh, and I stopped by to see how Fernando is doing. I am pleased to say he is up and about."
etc.
Unless I hear otherwise, I expect Fernando has returned to work as normal,
since 7/27/07's post had a photo of him back at the sandwich shop.
I was VERY happy with the AnthroCon Special last con, and hope he
does the same this con.
As to making a special sandwich, I don't know if it would have occurred to him.
Would probably need a separate sign for the convention BESIDES the Special.
And there's no guarantee we'd like it any better than the OTHER sandwiches.
So, I have NO idea if he's planning it. My GUESS is "no."
Let me get back to you about any followup to the Furvey Survey- I think I have
the answer to that saved somewhere...

permalinkThe data on the 2007 Furvey Survey is still being collated.
Another survey appears to be planned for 2008.
I would be surprised if there was NOT a 2008 survey.

Actually, there have been some premlinary results posted to the survey taker's LiveJournal:
http://drg-kcgerbasi.livejournal.com/
Note that these are not final results (or conclusions), but she does do a fair amount of explaining on the current data set, and even talks a little about how statistics work ("p values", for example). Good stuff.

I was quite impressed with the work she had up there (hadn't actually clued in to the fact that it was only a preliminary numbers-crunch).
It struck me as particularly interesting that while furries are noted as being at risk for any number of major or minor psych problems, she found that her control group, regular college students, seemed to be even more in danger of them. I'm paraphrasing, of course.

permalinkShouldn't surprise you.
College is stressful, generally.
Hobbies remove stress, generally.
Generally, college students are more stressfull than furries or
any OTHER hobbyist.
Even those stressed DURING AC are generally unstressed by the end
of AC...

permalinkShe said she was still working with the 2007 numbers, so I didn't want to
confuse anyone-I was just going to make an announcement when she was
as done with the 2007 numbers as she's going to be.
(Something like what they say about movies- how you don't FINISH a movie,
you give up on doing more with it....)

i've got some results emailed to me too and was wondering of a follow up study hehe
as far as the sandwich i always thing it would be funny for a "brick on the head brisket" however....i'm not sure if brisket over there will be like brisket over here

I have to admit that as cool as it would be to have a sandwich. I really hope it's not called the furry sandwich that just sounds gross

This may sound strange, seeing as I've attended all the Pittsburg Anthrocons so far (and one in Philly) but I've never actually heard the story of Fernando. I seems like it might be a bit of a tale considering the list Kage gave. So what exactly happened?

permalinkThere story is there, you just have to look for it along the side menu. I remember seeing it somewhere but can't place where I found it.

permalinkFrom Dr. Conway's LiveJournal entry for July 12, 2007:
Anthrocon and Fernando
A lot of folks have heard how the owner of Fernando's Cafe was injured in an altercation with someone who had been bothering some Anthrocon attendees. Before the story gets blown up to the point that Fernando was killed battling a horde of zombie Nazi dinosaurs, I should like to offer the accurate version.
Some of our attendees were being accosted by a panhandler outside of the cafe (a panhandler -- not an anti-Furry local, not a Burned Fur, not a 4-channer, and not a zombie Nazi dinosaur). Now, Fernando didn't want someone like that driving away good customers, so he chased the bum away. The bum, however, felt that he should not have to be chased away, and responded by throwing a rock (or similar hard object) at Fernando. Fernando was struck in the head and suffered a mild skull fracture and a cut that required stitches. His insurance will cover the medical bills and he's expected to be back at work very soon.
The bum, indeed, was taken into custody, and reportedly was tazed while resisting arrest.
Fernando is still quite worthy of our respect and gratitude for trying to give his customers (our attendees) a happy dining experience and I am very sorry that he suffered injury from this brute. I shall be dropping by to see him in the next few weeks to tell him personally.
Just to clarify again: the assault was not at all related to the fact that the customers were Furry; it was, instead, the act of a mentally disturbed individual who was retaliating against a business owner for a perceived affront.
I accept this as the final word on the incident, although personally I prefer Zombie Nazi Dinosaurs...

rar...
Personally as a (soon to be returning) collage student and a fur the preliminary results were not too suprising. As anyone in my position who had a tendency during the last half of my previous school year to laugh myself to sleep while staring at the celing that when collage stress, furry sexual/artistic anxiety, and a couple drops/bottles of alcohol mix... Things arn't exactly... Normal.
Really I would have assumed without browsing through the prelim reults that furs (in general) were all kinds of wierd and conflicting in the reults. But now... It seems Collage students are more stressed out and have odd fascinatioins or desires? Is this just a normal cycle in growing up? Never know. But I will say that drawing an anthro orca on your paper is a bit more entertaining than listening to a lecture on Bordeaux regional grape varities; coming from personal experience.

And a year later...
You can find the on-line preprint here for the 2006 survey results: http://www2.asanet.org/sectionanimals/articles/GerbasilFurries.pdf
I think it'll be published out sometime this year but I can't remember when or where.
