What is the best type of foam to make your fur head with? I'm new to making fursuits but I've always wanted to make one myself and save up the money to go to a furcon and see others as well as show mine.
Hit your local yellow pages, and find a foam store, or a designer supply or a furniture upholsterer... they all sell foam in sheets. You want a closed cell foam, medium density.
From experience, know what color the majority of the fur on your suit will be. If you're going for white a tan, avoid black and dark gray foam.

I get my foam from my local(ish...) fabric store. it's usually green or white and is used for chairs and such. it's kinda firm - That's something you need for a head - so the nose and ears kinda stick up like they are supposed to. And look for scraps! I get scrap foam from them for 25cents a piece - and they are big pieces!!! or if you need foam I may be able to send you some
Oh that would help quite well too! I was told to use a soft foam like matress foam for the whole suit except the ears where you use a more dense foam so that they don't flop all over the place. I was wondering if I need to use a more dense foam for the head too? Like the muzzle, eyebrows or anything else.
I use a somewhat sturdy foam. don't want my muzzle to start bending down... plus the inside of my muzzle is hollowed out a bit for breathing room. The stuff I use... will squish but comes right back the shape it was before. If you go out shoping for foam, bring a piece of the fur with you that you will use. I didn't have an issue with the green foam I used under white fur (though it's a very very very light green) I'm not sure how thick the fur you have is, or if the fabric under the fur itself is very "see throughy"
BTW - are you making a fennec head? If so - That would be UBER cute! (has a very strong liking to really big ears)
Another old trick from costuming from way back is to go to the fabric/craft store and get sheets of the plastic mesh they use for kids needlepoint. Its light and flexible yet very strong.. perfect for the cores of ears.

Oh yeah that would be a good tip, I don't want the ears flopping everywhere but I wouldn't want them too stiff to the point if you bump them they're permanantly done and ruined. Would be quite bad.
Make sure if you use white fur, to use white foam, as the green shows through sometimes.
I like to use closed cell foam for ears, and they make tubing style swimming noodles of the stuff that already have some curve to them if you can find those. (about 5 inch diameter for the ones I got) You may have to wait for spring to find swimming noodles in stock though.
Probably depends on the fur... you can try something of that color behind it to see. Its worse on the nose if you trim the fur short like most people do on the nose. White can definitely look greenish with that green foam underneath. They sell the white foam squares at Walmart. The last head I made I only needed one square in the pack of 4 of that foam but most use up the pack on a head, and more if you pad the paws of course.

Yeah I'm gonna be making a fennec
I couldn't resist, they're too cute so I chose the fennec as my very first fursuit.

On seeing the subject line on this one all I could think of was a fursuit that foams at the mouth.
