I just love my title for my posts on new forums. It's so amusing. Anyway, I'm new to the idea of going to Anthrocon, and at the moment it's on the back burner of my mind. As I have to get through with going to FC before I can even think about going to this convention.n But there is the possibility of going to this. Anyway, this post is to just say Hi to everyone. I'm Kaji Ryuujin (Or Ryuuko)and I'm a draolf, DracoLupine, Dolf, DragoWolf, or as I call myself A mutt. And this wouold be my second furry convention if I were to go. I also have a question. I saw on the Further Confusion website that there's a Travel Assitance Fund for some furs to try and help others get to the convention. Is there one for Anthrocon? |

Welcome, comrade!
I don't think there is a TAF but there is a Rooming Section of the forum where you can find roommates to split the cost of the hotel room, and another section for figuring out rides. I'm sure after making some new friends and talking back and forth, you might be able to cut costs down by room sharing and the like. However, seeing as how you're on the other side of the mainland, you might just want to try an airline like Southwest. I hear they're the econo airlines. Hope this helps.

I am afraid that we do not offer travel assistance at this time.
We do have a "room share" and "ride share" section of the website, which will be made live in January, 2008. (We don't see much point in making it live more than 7 months before the convention)

permalinkYou may or may not find the ride-share of use to you.
Given the distance, you may prefer to fly.
There's many, many ways to find a good airline discount.
I use Travelocity as my baseline.
According to that site, if you were flying from where you are
(closest airport-Portland) to Pittsburgh, and buying tickets now,
the price would be $474, round-trip.
It would take anywhere from 6:11 to 10:30, depending on where
you changed planes to get a direct flight to Pittsburgh.
There may be ways to get a cheaper flight, maybe much cheaper.
I'd look into them sooner rather than later.
Sometimes amazing discounts appear a few months before the
convention, but if not, the sooner you book, the better the
discounts that I've seen. (Uncle Kage's flown more than me, and
has better advice about discounts and flying. I actually don't
LIKE to fly.)

permalinkFlight prices are starting to scare me (route London-Pittsburgh 25.6-30.6), as they rose the past month and a half from 774 dollars (United) to ~815 (With Air India and Delta) / ~890 (with Northwest).
Any reason to get scared?

Yeah, I've been looking at the airline prices and regretting not having enough money to get a ticket for AC /now/. But, I'm hoping that they won't be too expensive after FC. ... But I'm sure that's a foolish hope anyway. *shrugs* I haven't flown in like... 10 years... So, this'll be almost new to me to even fly down to FC.
... And the time is another thing. :/ I better bring something along with me to entertain myself if I go to FC, or just sleep. XD And I've heard that Travelocity isn't the best. Farecast.com is a good site to go by if you're looking for cheap tickets within a three month span. Longer than that? Go straight to the Airline in my case.
...And I'm /so/ not going on a 2 day+ car ride with other furs. I'd go insane. XD

ou're right, a travel assistance system would be fantastic; travel and rooms are generally the biggest expense for most attendees to any con, from what i can see, and rooms are a lot easier to fudge than travel, especially if you're going a long way. Certainly there are some gathers i've passed on because i wasn't sure i was up to covering travel costs.
Right now, i have no reason to believe that a travel assistance system is on the horizon, probably because of sheer logistics. The board could consider whether putting up a travel assistance section in the forums (basically a place to say 'i need money, please help') at some point, though certainly not for this year. The hcallenge i can see is that if you gave money to it you would, essentially, be sending money over the 'net to someone you know nothing about and that most likely no one you know can vouch for. That's a bit sketchy, to be honest, and just opens the door for a lot of ppl to abuse it.
The other way i could see it happening is that the board could someday decide to set up a separate fund that furs can donate to on their registration forms, with the understanding that the money will be doled out to others who apply to it for scholarship assistance. That would be seven kinds of nifty, but... *sighs* ...the challenge i can see is person power. Something like that would require one or more people to check the balance at one particular time each year, read all of those scholarship requests, make decisions about who should get how much, send out acceptance or rejection letters (i'm positive that AC would receive more requests than they could answer), receive travel confirmations, write and send out reimbursement checks, and then record the whole thing for tax purposes. If furs want a receipt for the tax deduction, then that's even more that needs to be done. That's a huge job, and one that requires access to whatever bank account that fund money goes into, so you'd almost certainly need someone who served or could serve on the board that they trusted to handle that kind of money, and i don't know who that could necessarily be. I don't know if anyone has access to the AC account(s) other than our chairman himself, and i am *positive* that he doesn't have the time to administer a fund like this on top of his other duties.
So as much as i adore this idea, i think it's something we may have to think about for a while longer until we can find some reasonable way to make it happen.
Sorry if i've gone on a bit too long about this--i love the concept, but i work for the finance department of a nonprofit, right next to the grants coordinator no less, so i know way too much about this stuff.

permalinkOne other consideration: could this impact Anthrocon's non-profit status? If there's any possible impact there, it probably will not happen.

permalinkTravel Assistance Fund? Now there is a scary thought. People of all ages go to cons of all types, sometimes with their own agendas. Once they have arrived they are free to participate in whatever activites the con allows. They are responsible for their own actions. I may be wrong, but once the con starts subsidizing travel costs, (or helps to facilitate such cash payments), they may leave themselves open to certain liabilities. The words "minors", "crossing", "state lines", "for ***** purposes", come to mind.

Best bet is to start saving up in advance.
Funny thing though, even though the airfare is going up, driving is going up more.
I can fly to Pitt for a lot less than driving there from Omaha. It used to be the other way around. Of course I also lost a day and a half of my life driving there and back, so ya gotta figure that in too. Flying is definitely better for me.

Heh, I need to keep on saving up for FC. And I'm going to wait till that's over. See what I have left from that and then start to save up once more. To see if I can't get enough money to get a plane ticket to AC while they are still cheap. But, that's going to be a rather fun experience.
