I have some non-furry friends who are interested in going to Anthrocon this year because of the "Guest of OK", Floyd Norman. They are HUGE Disney fans, but don't know much of anything about the fandom, expect that my mate and I are members. Any suggestions or warnings to give them prior to attendance? |

You could point them to our About Furry page, and maybe to a copy of last year's schedule, so they get a better idea of activities which are held at the convention.
You can also point them to our community on Flickr, if you like.

permalinkI wonder, your friends being such big Disney fans that they'd want to travel to a con just to meet an esteemed animator, they may be furry after all

Not necessarily. My brother is going, he's a big Disney fan, and he really wants to meet the animator. But he is definitely not a fur. He knows all about the fandom, he's cool with everything about it, and supports its members. He jokes that he's coming along as a human ambassador and I'm his military escort.

I personally feel that Anthrocon makes everybody welcome. As far as people doing strange things, I've seen worse at science fiction and other fannish conventions. Just be sure to let them know that there are some strange stories going around and don't believe everything they hear. Tell them that they'll have a great time.

permalinkAnthroCon is a family-friendly convention, and as mild an event to attend as I've ever
attended. Any problems are rare and swiftly attended-to by the Dorsai. They'll see
some people dressed in fursuits, and some people wearing ears and a tail, and the
majority wearing neither (but still in street-clothes, of course.)
There's bound to be lots of things on the schedule they will like, if they try.
The main warning I'd give is against judging the fandom based on the rude caricatures
in the media.
