New UK ConGower saying a little hello for the first time!
|
|
Im posting this just to say a warm Hello!, also if it will help, for UK ConGowers to commute to Pittsburgh. This is a little hello to everyone on the forums; Im Tazz from the Far North Of Scotland, UK. Im cross between a collie and German Sheppard. *** Edited *** A real representation of my character, my companion animal and Concept art can be seen here. http://www.flickr.com/photos/tazzuk/ ***End of Edit*** My Concept Character Fursuit Drawings are still maturing but hopefully is a working progress but I think its ok for my first real attempt. Im new to the whole Con scene and have decided to become a part off the Anthrocon 08 as my very first Con, making it a memorable one! This is a radical change and interesting trip for me, registered as a super sponsor to experience everything! I dont like the idea of commuting alone or unprepared. That being said id like for this Hello to become just that little bit more, for the rest of us from Britain to get together and have a joint commuting trip in safety and to make new friends before AC08. Id like to accompany commuters and help other on the travels so its not to much a burden when it comes to it. Or is there a list of UK ConGowers seeking travel companionship? Thank you in advance if you can help some of us newcomers and a big thank you to the help still to come! Kindest Regards, Tazz. |

Welcome Tazz. This will be my first con also, but I'm already in the states. Your concept art is awesome. I will be getting my fursuit in the spring. Mine is a black and silver wolf. I'm kind of excited about my first con, I can't wait. Maybe we can meet up somewhere and have a drink at the con. See you in 207 days.

*friends you over on LiveJournal*
I think your best bet for finding other UK furries would be to start at http://furry.wikia.com/wiki/Category:United_Kingdom and, after reaching out to folks near you, find out who is coming to Anthrocon.
Good luck!

Delta flies nonstop flights from Edinburgh to JFK Airport in the US. From there you could connect to Pittsburgh. Right now it is running USD1060 (about eight pounds and tuppence).

permalinkLoL!! I wonder if I can use my old collection of old 1902 Queen Coins to pay for the Flights! 4,200 miles in 13 hours will be new for me. Im looking at least $1k return direct from London ether way, selling car, working overtime, but 08 will be special! I have booked the Hotel and the Registration as Super.
Can I wear a band of some sort on my arm, or custom made Velcro strip saying 1st-Con-Noob or Con-Virgin, think ill get more huggs?
XD Grrrrr!
Looking forward to the opening ceremony!

permalinkI demand you give that car of yours to someone who'll take good care of it.
I'll buy it off your hands but all I can offer you is a stick of gum. I must warn you, it's already been chewed. ^_~ Man, I love watermelon gum........

permalinkDon’t think my bank will be happy about that one! "So Tazz your looking for an extension on your loan, as you sold you’re car for a piece of chewed gum?" Heh ok XD

hi. Look at the bright side I just saw on cnn people from the UK are coming over here to christmas shop just because the exchange rate is so good for you guy's.

I just returned from London. I was rather stunned to see the same numbers on the restaurant menu that I would see on a comparable menu in the USA, only to realize that those numbers represented twice what I was used to paying.
For example, a glass of wine in the US is $4.50. A glass of wine in the UK is GBP4.50. About $9.00. And it wasn't even very good wine!

permalinkMy taste buds haven’t matured enough to admire the taste of wine, it never occurred to me from your picture you liked wine! Am I right in saying you get what you pay for, £4.50 sounds cheap to me, but in exchange rates Im sorry to hear it wasn’t all that good. I hate our Taxes over here. Im not sure if you are aware but the fuels has rocketed, Its about $2.20 per litre of 95 Octane Petrol. How much does fuel cost you at pumps just now? I think diesel here is about $2.80? not sure though, relatively speaking.

permalinkIn my area, Regular Unleaded (87 Octane) is $2.88 per 9/10 per gallon. Mid-Regular (89 Octane) is $2.98 and Premium (91/93) is $3.08. That's the cheapest in my area. Other places, they're more expensive. Diesel, IIRC, is about $3.20.
Thankfully, I don't have to pay for diesel in my rig, but I feel bad for my boss. My saddle tank will take 60 gallons of that stuff when I'm down to 1/4 of a tank.
Heck, I just spent $41.00 on 14.3 gallons for my car last night.

permalinkI wouldn’t say no to more friends! AC08 will be slaying me about £3000 when every thing is paid for, suit, trains, boats, flights, accommodations etc. I hope you can make it too and that it cheaper for you! Im working overtime tonight (hopefully waiting on the call) and probably 6 days a week for the next 3 months so it should help.
Lol and try not to let intimate comments slip on the forum when your drunk, vie done that before and had a lot of explaining to do! Take care buddy!

Welcome, Tazz, to the world of Fan Conventions! Almost every one is different in character, though Furry Conventions tend to be similar in general theme and feel; each specific convention has its own personality, partly because of the specific staff working to set it up and run it, but as much due to the specific crowd that it attracts; very much like planning to invite the "right" mix of guests to bring a party alive.
I gather from your posts that you wish to go "Whole Hog" in attending AC08, with the supersponsorship, the staff volunteer (BLESS YOU!) and everything, and such enthusiasm is to be encouraged!
But such enthusiasm need not be quite so expensive. Unless you are a determined fursuiter, it isn't necessary to spend money and or make a fursuit; most Furry Fans do not own or wear fursuits, as much as we may wish to; that might cut down substantially on your expense, right there.
And then there is the matter of room expense - if you can hook up with other UK Furs who are AnthroCon-bound, consider sharing a room.
Depending on how much time before or after the convention proper that you can devote to travel, it might be cheaper to travel from New York to Pittsburgh by train; an increasing number of Furry Fans who live in the mid-atlantic states do this each year, but again, it eats time and is less flexible, schedule-wise, compared to air-travel.
Indeed, I would like to recommend that your planning be directed by the dictum, "Travel Light". Pittsburgh in summer is a hot and humid place, so light summer kit would be advisable; while the convention center and hotel are provided with air conditioning, just where you are and what you are doing and how many folks are around you will determine how chilly the artificial environment is, so a light wind-breaker would not be amiss. And - if you are staying at the Westin - you can practically experience the whole convention without having to step outside; but if you do, be aware that the seasonal weather may include summer thunderstorms, so the windbreaker may also need to repel a bit of rain.
A useful item, which doesn't take up much space itself, is a canvas "book bag", which is convenient to carry when in the dealer's room, to carry purchases around in. I tend to pack 2 or 3 of these canvas bags (usually purchased at other conventions, or promotional items - you can never have too many fabric bags with handles or drawstrings!), and if I buy more than will fit in my luggage, a couple nylon cableties secure the things, and I have additional carry-on capacity for the return home.
This raises the question - where is the best place and time to exchange money? I don't think that the Westin has any provision for that, though I may be wrong - and while you can put meals eaten in the better restaurants on plastic, you will need some cash to deal with the furry dealers, many of whom - most of whom - shall not have any ability to handle a charge card.

permalinkHi buddy, thank you for the welcome ^ ^
I’m not planning of going overboard, but rather to experience, for my first con, everything. My following conventions will be much cheaper as the suit will be taken care for. My visit also is to extend beyond the con and continue my vacation for another week to take onboard the states and possibly Canada. *Considers future immigration too*
The AC is a way of opening myself up, in moderation, and to make myself and others feel happy. I know the suit isn’t essential item to take, I know there uncomfortable to wear at times, but id be more self confident in my one : )
Ill be considering offers for roomies, anything to help others spread the cost. I’ve looked at the cost between UK to New York etc, and the prices are very similar for the sake of shaving 6 hours of my travels for £20 is worth it. 13 hours on the plane will be enduring.
Thank you for the tips about the weather, ill certainly be taking into account what to wear casually.
I was wondering about collectables and drawings, what would be best suited to carry them with me, that’s a good idea., TY!
Im sure there are ATM machines, about to withdraw from, I hope ?!
Thank you so much for your assistance, and help, I really appreciate it, its kind people like you that help not just me but others as well, your wisdom will go along way!

Yes, but please be sure to bring sufficient cash/travelers checks with you. ATMs have the unfortunate habit of going empty when we're in town.

Tazz,
I think it's fair to say that it's an honor for you to select Anthrocon as your first furry convention. Thank you for that choice and the staff will be doing everything we can to make it a truly memorable and fun weekend. If you don't mind, please take a moment to find me during the weekend (I'll be at opening ceremonies). I'd love to say hello in person.
Also, please consider attending the panel called "So This is Your First Furry Convention". it will give lots of good information (and try to be enteraining as well) on lots of things you can do at AC, and hints to make the convention more enjoyable.
Again, welcome to Anthrocon!

permalinkHello KP, and thank you so much! I thought to myself what would be the Con I should attend first, from timing right down to the atmosphere I am looking for. I researched for a long time into local UK cons and European Cons as my first venture, AC just feels the best first choice. Besides I wanted to treat myself as my birthday is the week after ^ ^ Id like to find something fun to do after the AC while Im in the states, Still time to plan!, as Its will also be my first time in America.
Ill certainly like to meet and shake a paw with you and say hello in person too!
Ill defiantly be attending the “So This is Your First Furry Convention” I think its going to be the best start of the day : ) Im trying to persuade a friend to come also, but I think he’s going to be a little stage frightened! (He’s going hate me for saying that HA HA!)
Im glad to hear from the board members from the AC that you do in fact reach out to your members, it makes the community far stronger and kind. Im on a committee panel that caters for the public and club members up to 1,200 head count (2006) spectators in motor sports, track events. We know communication with club members is a vital tool to keep the spirits up and to ultimately enjoy ourselves on the day, and it help us improve on future events. All Im say it’s good to hear from you guys involved in setting up the AC, taking the time to say hello goes a long way.
Take care!
Tazz.
