Hey, I am new to furries. How do I explain them to my parents? My dad is kind of a Hank Hill dad, who dosnt want his kid to be embarassed. So, how do I tell my Mom and Dad? Thanks.
Unless they've already been listening to the media-
or YOU'VE been listening to the media-
that's all you'll really need.
If nobody's been doing that, it makes more sense, as others have pointed out, to focus
on what it IS. That's what that page does.
If someone HAS been listening to the media, say so and I'll repost my usual quotes from
people who WEREN'T trying to invent a story where there was none.
i dont want to frighten you but if your parents are like mine and your like me, it will be alot harder explaining things to them than just showing them the about furries page.
as they have already seen in the media "what goes on in them cons."
i wont say anything to give you an example of what to say as i have already screwed myself over with my family.
just some advice and i stress this is refrain from telling them about the bad side of furrydom that would be a good place not to go.

Sorry to hear it didn't go well. I am reminded of some good advice, and associated examples, posted here some time ago by Fenris Lorsai:
And really, hiding where you're going and what you're doing will make your parents more upset than just coming out with it to start with. In said explanation its probably easier to start with the positive and don't even bother mentioning the bad.
Example: "I want to go to a furry con. What's that? It's a collection of artists that are interested in art with animals. You know, like cartoonists and wildlife painters and authors and even some people that perform in costume. I'll get to meet all kinds of people with all kinds of neat jobs!"
Bad Example: "I want to go to a furry con. What's that? Well they like animals... but not like that... it's not really all about sex. No, its not like that CSI episode! Only some of them like to have sex with stuffed animals!"
Hmmmmm, which con will your parents let you go to... not #2! Once you've gone with explanation #1, don't forget to include that this is an organized event run by responsible adults and there is security around that can help you if you have a problem. (You'll learn to love the security. They're really good and really helpful) You don't have a chaperone, but if there is a problem, there are adults around that can help you sort things out. Parents always expect when you go far away you'll end up getting mugged and they'll steal your shoes and you'll end up with no hotel room and you'll have to sleep in the rain and you won't even have a quarter to call them to come save you...
Parents are funny like that. That there are adults organizing this whole thing is an important detail that will help reassure them.

Hey Giza, can you possibly make a sticky with the topic "Explaining it all to your parents"? This topic seems to come up weekly.
