I have this bad habit with REALLY old items of mine... just today, I was cleaning up the outer area of my room (we moved a little bit ago) and I was THRILLED to find my bath robe and my GBA SP WITH the YELLOW VERSION of Pokemon =P. ANYWAY...no matter if the item has a use anymore or not, I just cant seem to get rid of it. Like this old radio thingey thats very junky that only had one battery in it with no earphones, or a Seuss hat (dont ask). Any tips on how to just, "Throw it away!"? (its haaaaarrrrddddd) P.S.~~ |

Sadly, I've never really come across finding something from long ago and wanting to keep it. I never did like being a packrat. It's all about clutter, which I cannot stand. My car, my room, my computer, I keep things as clean and simple. Things that I do come across that I haven't seen in awhile, I think back to when the last time I had it and if I'd ever have a use for it again. If I cannot think of a good reason, it goes in the trash and I never look back. It's worked for me so far. I've never really kept something just to have it. Everything I own has a functional purpose. Like I said, I can't stand being a packrat. ^^

Lucky you, I wish I had the urge to throw some stuff out. I think I get it from my mom. In the spring, I'm going to do some BIG TIME house cleaning. I'm going to get rid of a bunch of magazines and stuff I don't use. If it is good shape, can we say YARD SALE.

permalinkI keep my magazines for no longer than a year. Unless it's my MiniTruckin magazines, then good chance I'll keep them. Because...y'know....LOTTA good stuff in the MT magazines.
Asphalt is evil, it must be punished. Mine drags on the ground.

I'll take your Suess hat XD I love those silly things for some reason.
I do find odd things that I adored ages ago from time to time--like my old ratty "velveteen" rabbit from when I was a kid...

hi. i'm DasWulf.. and i'm a packrat.....
the first step is admitting your problem.....
naw.. heck with that. i'll always be a packrat. i save all kinds of crap. not garbage more along the lines of junk. i'm pretty handy with stuff, so i never know if i might be able to use it for something. on rare occasion i get into the "toss it" mode. then later on i realize i really coulda used something i tossed.
anyone cleaning house?, tossing some stuff? call me i have a pickup.haha

*looks around* Sheesh, i gotta clean up.
I'm a packrat too yeah, i find it hard to throw stuff away. But i store only stuff that i repeat to myself (has a function, or i will use it still) "anonymous" type afro (no, nothing to do with the raids though), Salora manager computer, AmigA computer, old PC, olde olde clothes which look dumb on me these days... everything is just pushing through my closets and desks ^^. Someday soon i'll make a big cleanup and think better places for most of the stuff. And even something i COULD throw off

My advice:
#1: Remember that you live in a fitinite space, and therefore have room for finite things. When you want more stuff, you need to make space.
#2: Don't keep it around 'because you might need it.' You probably won't. If things are in good, usable condition by others, your local Goodwill store or other collecting charity will benefit from the donation, and Ebay can help with more valuble things.
#3: If you aren't picky about it, you don't have a collection. You have a pile of things with a vague theme. A collection is maintained, displayed, and carefully chosen.
