Would my jacket be considered a weapon?

Hello, This year will be my first year at AC and my first year in a suit (partial). I was planning to include as part of my costume a leather motorcycle jacket (In June? What's the downside?) which would be customized with cone shaped spikes on the shoulders, collar, and down on of the arms. More specifically, the spikes are half-an-inch and come to a rounded tip, thus removing their ability to cut, scratch, puncture, gouge, and so on. I can't really fathom a situation in which my jacket could cause physical injury (unless a hemophiliac jumps from a second story balcony onto my back) but I just wanted to make sure I wouldn't be asked to remove my costume as per the weapons policy. As far as I know there are no city ordinances which prohibit the wearing of 'Punk' jackets. Has this ever been a problem before. I guess I ought to get the concept cleared before I land in Pittsburgh. Thanks!!! |

well if there was to be a stampede and you landed on top of some poor sole it would be painful...

I currently weigh over 300 lbs (hopefully less than that in June). That poor sole is going to be flattened regardless of my clothing situation.
God, I sure hope it doesn't turn into a mosh-pit.

permalinkThe Dorsai, giza, Sgt. Steve, and Uncle Kage will soon chime in on the proper attire. Obviously, you won't have problems wearing such a jacket during the middle of summer in PA? Also, keep in mind that the amount of walking you'll be doing during the entire con, so hope you have good shoes.
BTW, welcome comrade!

I figure a motorcycle jacket shouldn't be any hotter than a full body suit. Right? A least I'll have the luxury of jeans instead of fuzzy-britches.

permalinkTrue, very true. But, then again most will wear UnderArmour and some even stick little fans inside the suit head to keep them cool. And, for those that are used to the heat, it's no big deal.
I'm thinking your jacket will be close to borderline prohibited but possibly not.

I suppose I could wear UnderArmour underneath a jacket and t-shirt (the jacket doesn't really need to be zipped after all). Do you reckon it would do anything to keep me cooler?
Also, having never been to AC I feel this is a valid question. While it may be summer outside, what's the temperature like inside the convention center. I expect it would be quite warm and a bit stuffy due to the huge volume of people in close quarters, but it's not like 80-90 degrees (F) inside is it? Will I find some respite from the summer heat indoors?

The interior of the DLCC is "room temperature". The exception is the fursuit lounge there, which is more like 50 degrees or so. (We tell the DLCC to disable the thermostat for that room

That seems totally fair. So I wouldn't expect to be too beaten down my the heat of a leather jacket indoors. I'll try to avoid direct sunlight as much as possible. Jehovah forbid it! I might even get a sun-tan.
Thanks for the reply!

permalinkI've asked around about UnderArmour and it just wicks the moisture straight from your body. Your jacket will more than likely take all that perspiration but hopefully your jacket can be cleaned fairly easy. Oh, and you wouldn't have to worry about wearing UnderArmour under your shirt. I've seen some of their UA shirts and they look like any other shirt.

Hope this helps.

permalinkNo, if you're just wearing your jacket around and not purposely shouldering the spikes at people, then it is not a weapon.
Just, please, be away of other people when things get crowed. Don't take it off and start swinging it about.

Thanks for the bit-o-good-news.
"...not purposely shouldering the spikes at people..."
A skillful attack in indeed.
