http://www.anthrocon.org/hotel/westin has the hotel's phone number, if you wished to call and ask about this. I would imagine that a money order would suffice, but you will have to inquire further; deposits are going to be partial payment of the room, yes.
Also, this sort of question is much better answered in http://www.anthrocon.org/forum/westin, where the Westin staff are far more likely to read and attend to them.

permalinkPlease direct your next hotel question to the hotel forum, or the
hotel itself. I shall answer what I know.
(You actually know something? Yes, now hush up.)
I know they're fine accepting USPS money orders, so I see no reason for them to
balk at a Western Union money order. I may be wrong, but a check in your hand
may or may not be "good", the money may not be in the account, whereas a money
order is money already there. So, I expect they'd be HAPPIER with a money order
from a REPUTABLE source like the USPS or Western Union.
IMHO, of course.
Any charges for a room will be deducted FIRST from money on deposit, AFAIK.
That means if you send in the entire amount of the cost of the room, plus
sundries and so on, they will deduct all charges FIRST from that, and either
will refund you the difference at the end (possibly in cash if it's minor,
more likely by check when bookkeeping catches up to it), or charge you the
difference to some credit card if you run over.
All of that's based on my experience with the Westin to-date.
Of course, they can change a policy when they want-for example, you now
HAVE to make the reservation with a credit card or something, but in
AC'06, you could send a deposit right after making the reservation,
listing it as "reservation PENDING" until the money arrived.
So, we know they can and WILL change policies when it suits them.
So, my answer, of course, is not official.

Actually, you can still make the reservation with a deposit paid by check or money order. Call the hotel directly and find out just how much, and where to send it.

permalinkThat's strange. IIRC (and I was paying attention to this, since this is my
preferred method of reserving), we were told that they didn't do
"deposit pending" any longer, and we were told that on this forum.
By someone official (as opposed to someone like me.)
(This meant my "Plan A" had to be completely redone.)

Ah, here's what was said...

me:
Jaime, official Westin person:
Uncle Kage:
Ok, so "deposit PENDING" isn't an option, but payment can be sent, and THEN a
reservation can be made, based on the payment PREVIOUSLY sent.
So, we can do "reservation pending", so to speak.
Dunno why I forgot that...
