Well Im new here and if I can go to 07 con it will be my first. Well when I got to registeration the form for people under 18 (pdf) doesent work for me. It first freezes firefox then goes to a white page. Is there anyway to fix this or is there a different link?

Also Im only 15 and I dont really know how im going to get there. I live in Florida so I was thinking about taking a plane but Im not sure. I can't tell my parents because they would think im crazy unfortunatlly. Do any of you have any suggestions on how I could possibly get there? I would really like to come. I think thats all the questions I have for now, thanks in advance.

Hmm, the link worked for me. If you're not having any luck with FireFox, you might want to try in Internet Explorer and see if that works.

Coming from Florida, flying in would probably be the fastest way to make it to Pittbsurgh.

As for your parents, you WILL need to tell them so that they can fill out the parental consent form. FWIW, the Chairman's parents attend Anthrocon every year, and my parents have attended it twice.

Ok, I will try Internet Exploer. I was going to tell my parents but like not what it is exactly. They probably wouldn't approve. Also what do you think I could do for hotel wise? I know I need to be 18 or older to get one so I wont be able to do that. What do you guys think?

EDIT: Ok Internet Explorer worked. But I do suggest updating it unless you want me to. Just a suggestion because it still has 2006 dates on there.

*checks* Yeah, that would be a problem. Sticking out tongue I'll let the person responsible know about that. Thanks for letting us know about that.

Hey no problem Smiling. I will wait until you get that fixed before I do anything.

Your parents look out for you; that is the job of a parent. You do not want to lie to them, ESPECIALLY about travelling out of state to go to a fan convention! You might ask yourself, WHY you think that they would disapprove, and be honest as you ponder that question.

I am not associated in any way with the folks who run AnthroCon; I'm just an attendee, who has gone to only 6 of them. But the staff who run AnthroCon do their best to ensure that what is offered is a class act, all the way! And what they have control over, they control to the benefit and enjoyment of all attendees. What they CAN'T control, they must leave to the judgement and behaviour of those attendees, to be civil and upright, though they are quick to separate those people who are going to cause trouble from being able to attend the functions. I would heartily endorse AnthroCon as a pleasant experience...

...But I am fifty, and have seen something of this world. You are not; and it might not be wise to fly across several states to attend such an event on your own, unaccompanied by either responsible adults, or at the very least known and trusted friends.

AnthroCon is not the ONLY Anthro-themed convention, by the way; I believe that there is at least one in Florida. There are also many furry fans and artists in Florida, and I am sure that they stage Fan get-togethers - "Fur-meets" - of one sort or another. You might to well to check out who (and what) is available within your own state, first; and then perhaps consult your parents about involvement with Florida Furry Fans, or Sci-Fi/fantasy fandom in your part of the country.

Again - I don't think it wise to mislead your parents about what you wish to do; you do run the risk of them saying "no", but in the end, peace within the family - at least until you have the capability to make informed decisions for yourself, and pay for them - is perhaps more important.

Yes, I soppose your correct there. I will tell my parents when I have everything I need to discuss to them about it. Also I am trying to get a friend or two to go with me. So hopfully I wont be alone. But I do ensure you I wouldn't be one of those trouble maker's. Also I did check out the one in florida and it looked pretty nice but not alot of people attended. I liked Anthrocon because it had many people I want to meet and many activities to do. But I will tell my parents about it because I do see where your comming from. Thanks for the advice.

you might consider spending a few bucks to buy some furry comics on furbid. There are almost always some copies of old Furrlough somewhere on there. Furrlough is a completely clean comic, nothing to make parents worry and its a fair comic too. I might be putting some up for sale soon too. They can usually be acquired for a buck a peice most of the time on furbid, dont pay anything more for them unless you absolutely have to. They dont sell very well as Ive noticed they put out so many of them that their value is almost nonexistent.

as for speaking to your parents about furry, dont smack the whole thing down in front of them, try bringing little peices to them every so often and either discussing it or just showing them. By peices I mean art, furry related ideas, etc... "Peices" of furry that your parents might not have too much a problem with. You deffinitely dont want to bring a Doug Winger portfolio to them so stick with something they wont be shocked about. Slowly bring them in and show them you have an interest in it. If you basically walk up one day and tell them, mom, dad im furry and I want to fly to Pittsburgh to room with people Ive met over the internet next year, the answer will be no. I can garuntee you of this. If they actually did say yes to that, they your parents need counseling. Fact is, this is the internet and even tho we all know most furs are nice folks, you cant really trust the word of someone you met online. Talking with them over the phone, meeting in person prior to going on the trip, etc.... are all great ways to prepare for things, especially when you are underage. You might consider holding off this upcoming year and introduce your parents to the concept of you going to a few meets in the area. Get aquanted with the furs in your area before traveling long distances with them. Oh, and I know a bit of info about some of the furs in your area, I will IM you a bit of info you should deffinitely take a look at.

So all in all, take things slowly when introducing furry to your parents and dont lay the whole trip at their feet alongside the basic ideas of what furry is and expect them to say OK. I did that and I had just turned 18 and I only got to go to my first meet because my dad owed me some father son time and after some arguing agreed to drive me there.

You might consider "developing" an obvious interest in the animal(s) of your fursona before starting to show anything furry to them. It will make it look like your interest in furry is related to an interest in wildlife and make it more acceptable.

I might consider getting some comics, they are always fun to read. I hopfully can tell them about it soon, I will just tell them about Anthrocon and how I like the art and stuff. I might have to hold off this year as you said or mabye a couple more until im 18, but it depends what my mom says. I do have a interest in animals, especially Wolfs for some reason. When im older I will probably get a wolf dog or something like that. But if you want to contact me:

I would like to take C.J.'s comments and extend the theme a bit.

If you look in the upper right corner at the top of this page, there is a tab labelled "CON STORE". Enter the Con Store by clicking it, and then look at the Con Books. These are the souvenir program books for each convention, which is handed to you when you register and get your badge. They generally describe what is going on at that particular convention, are full of representative artwork and short stories written for the theme, and all sorts of advertisements for other conventions, and products - mostly comics, artistic offerings, and literature - of a "furry" nature.

And as you can see, they are relatively cheap - $3 or so, I think you need to add 7% sales tax, maybe postage as well - but you can get a tangible example of what AnthroCon (or at least, a _specific_ AnthroCon) is about, who goes there, and what there is to do. It might make a great reference when selling the idea that you want to actually go to one of these things, to your parents. Personally, I would recommend the ones from 2004 and 2005; no special reason, just my personal preference.

Want a better feel for what goes on? There is the 2005 highlight DVD; here you get to see the more visual aspects of the convention, with emphasis on the Fur Suit Masquerade; this, along with the 2005 con book in hand, might be the next-best thing to having actually gone to the convention, and might help you decide if you really wish to come; as close as you can get to first-hand knowledge, and such knowledge is rarely obtained so cheaply.

Again - I am in no way connected with the staff of AnthroCon; and I haven't seen the 2005 highlight DVD myself, but I have other products of AnthroCon, and they are generally of good quality; I merely make the suggestion that you consider buying these things as the least expensive means of understanding what AnthroCon is about, and for demonstrating this to others.

Assassin2684's picture

Ok, I might get one of those, but I have seen many videos from all the Anthrocons. There are many videos on Youtube and Google Video that show allot of what goes on there.

Hi there.

I'm the Programming Director for Anthrocon. If you have any specific questions about things at AC that you'd like for your parents, please feel free to ask. Many of the things you can see on the highlights DVD are not posted online, for example the Masquerade.

As a Florida resident, I can also help you with information on some of the events in our area (including Megaplex and Furloween) in case you want to attend one of the more local events as well. Give me a shout if there's anything I can help with.

Thank you. I checked out Megaplex and that looks fun aswell. So if I cant go to Anthrocon then I will probably go to that. But if I have any questions I iwll be sure to ask you.
