As I promised on another forum I'm gonna try and get together a westbound convoy of furs to AC08. The general startign point will be NYC and travel west via a yet unknown route but will probably be through Philidelphia and the PA turnpike (1/4/08). At this point I am puttign this out there as a possible mini pre-con event for those westbound who would like to meet other furs along the way. This is open to anyone who lives anywhere from NY state to Pittsburgh. If you are intersted leave your NAME, LOCATION, AND TRAVEL PLANS INCLUDING DATE OF DEPARTURE/RETURN AND WHETHER YOU PLAN TO BE EA PASSENGER OR DRIVER. If you wish to be a driver age, vechicle, passenger, cargo space, and personal startign point (where you are willing to start as RoadCon passes through) should also be given. I'm hoping that this will turn out to be a fun little kickoff to AC08 and a chance to meet some other furs who you may not normally meet at the con. Here's to a great trip I myself plan to be a driver Car: 2000 Crown Victoria (police interceptor) If anyone can come up with creative ways to keep the event interestign such as a Chinese fire drill and pitstops; or ideas for communications between vechicles and random thougts in general PLEASE say something!!!! |

May I suggest a particular restaurant called Hoss's, which is immediately off of exit 146 on the PA Turnpike. For me it is very close to the halfway point, and is a nice place to stop for a bite. It's an inexpensive steak restaurant with an immense salad and dessert bar, very good for groups of furries on the go.

*updates*
After a few days of brainstorming here's a few more notes:
1. Logo/Banner
2. Destiantion (hotels)
3. Pittstops and gatherign points
4. Communication between vechicals
5. Uh... Directions anyone?
1. Ok so simply put I think it'd be snazzy to have a logo or banner for this event. I'm goign to open this up to all artists (attending or not) to come up with some designs. 2 or three will be taken and broken down into categories of "event banner", "car logo", and possibly "badge/er something..."
2. Yes we are all going to Pittsburgh and eventually winding up at the convention hall BUT I'm gambling that not all of us have reservations at the Westin. The William Penn, Marriot, Econo lodge... ect. So in response it'd be helpful to know who adn when will break off from teh convoy, lest someone ends up following another car to teh wrong hotel.
3. As Kage suggested Hoss's will be one of the places we will be stopping every now and then for food/gas/stuff. There will be occasional (un)listed stops along the way at mainly rest stops and gas stations for those who plan on joining but don't know where to be or which cars are or what and also take a quick headcount. The biggest problem with this event will be "where the hell is it?!" I'd hate to see anyone who wants to join us but is running late or misses the convoy completely and keeps going down the road like a lost sheep looking for everyone. It is IMPORTANT to ease the trouble on everyone to give the location and general time you will hit the planned route.
4. This'll kinda wrap up a few of the previous notes. Should the pack break up or there's trouble or we rope in any stray furs I'm strongly considering marking up vechicals with temporary car paint. Whether or not it will be a logo or simple "ROAD CON 08 EAST YAY OMFGBBQWTF :D" or something it'll help with keeping tabs on things. Since we're not truckers or have CB radios we'll tape together some kind of haphazzard communications, but more on that later.
5. Probably the single most important thing. "How the hell do we get there?" AGAIN tell us WHERE AND WHEN you will be! Once you're signed in and part of our happy disfunctional roadcon family you'll be updated on the itenerary (if there's detours), labeled, and the like. Anyone with or know a good set of maps speak up; or if you have intimate knowledge of the planned route. I myself have a gps dash navigation thing but I don;t really want to rely on it in a pinch. I trust technology about a quarter as far as I can heave it.
FOR GOD SAKES SPEAK UP IF YOU KNOW OR WANT TO SUGGEST SOMETHING!

I'll be driving out on Thursday morning, around 10 am as soon as morning work traffic subsides, which ought to get me to the hotel around 2pm. I've got room for 2-3 passengers. We'll be departing from a bit west of King of Prussia. I don't mind picking someone up if they're on the way and willing to buy me lunch or toss in a couple bucks for gas. I don't mind anyone following me, either, as I'm familiar with the area. (and I'm sure a Vic's got no trouble keeping up with my Grand Prix). I've two radios that ought to work fine for when cell-phones aren't applicable.
Edit: "On the way" can include places that cause me to deviate little from my path, such as the York bus station or Downtown Lancaster rail station (and yeah, I'd try to be there early for you, since I wouldn't want to hang out at either for too long myself).

rar... 2/21/08 Alternate Routes
Did a little research for those of you who may miss out on a ride/get left behind/ or just need to how to get to a rendevous point; say downtown Phili, Harrisburgh, Trenton, NYC, ect.
Amtrak: There is only one train to and from NYC and Pittsburgh; the Pennsylvanian. Departs NYC (Penn Station) 10:30am, Arrives 8:30pm. Return trip departs Pitts 7am arrives 5pm. It stops in Phili and Harrisburgh. Check for updated schedules closer to the time of AC as sometimes there's a stop at the Newark Airport. http://www.amtrak.com/timetable/oct07/P42.pdf
Greyhound: Pretty much it's a similar route, I've done it and it's ok. This is much more flexible than amtrak who has 1 train a day vs multiple busses and stops inbetween. http://www.greyhound.com/home/TicketCenter/Step3.asp
NJ Transit: This is kidna tricky; you can easily get to and from anywhere in Jersey inbetween Penn Station in NYC and the 30th street station in Phili. Take the Northeast Corridor Line to get between NYC(Penn Station) and Phili; there is a train transfer somewhere however. *To get to Pittsburgh you need to hit either Amtrak Greyhound. ***To get to the Greyhound station you MUST take the R6(Norristown commuter to the Market East station and Greyhound will be right alongside the building. Naturally the Newark airport is a big hub.
SEPTA(Philidelphia): Since one of the planned stops is in/near Phili this should be helpful. SEPTA only services the greater Philidelphia area but you can in and out of the city easily. Unless I'm mistaken the 30th St. Station is the central hub for all comuter trains as well as services Amtrak and NJ Transit it also goes out to the airport.
CAT(Harrisburg): Unlike the previous all you'll find here is bus service, no rail that I am aware of other than an Amtrak station. Luckily both Amtrak and Greyhound have stations which are next to each other.
MTA(New York) HA! I'm sorry but this is a pretty complicated transit system; you need to figure it out for yourself. The two main stations are Grand Central Terminal and Penn Station and yes there is a big difference in service. Grand Central services local trains only; like the Long Island Railway and Metro North Railway(travels north and south along the Hudson River. Penn Station on the other hand services NJ Transit and Amtrak ONLY.
As for anything east of NYC Amtrak and Greyhound are about your only choices for traveling.

All Philadelphia commuter trains stop at both 30th Street Station and Market East. You aren't limited to the R6 (which doesn't run very often. The Market Street subway also stops at both stations. (You have to cross the street to get from 30th Street station to the subway.)
If you considering transferring from the Pennsylvanian to cars, you might want to consider Paoli station, which is near the Valley Forge exit of the Pennsylvania turnpike. This would avoid the need to navigate downtown Philadelphia traffic.

*nods* Also, 30th street is one of 3 central hub stations in ceneter city philadelphia; the other 2 are suburban station and market east, in that order.from those you can switch from any septa train line to any other septa train line easily.
30th street is also used by amtrak, yes; you just climb off your septa train and trot downstairs and down the hall to the main room, where all of the phila. amtrak trains arrive. Just be careful to make sure you go the the right track; there are 9 or 10 of them. *smiles*
Barring any changes, i'm expecting to take the amtrak myself, possibly after helping to load the truck down in malvern.

There's a possibility I could be convinced to pick someone up at Paoli, as it's about 25 minutes from me and puts me right down on 30.

Hiya! I'm kinda stuck up in northern VT during the summer, but I can get down to Boston most days and use the metro system decently well. I should be able to get anywhere by 1PM the latest.
Hotel? I can't foot it myself, and am having a hard time finding roomies. Likely to be at the omni.
I can drive if needed, and will pack light if able.
Please and thank you :3

This is somethign I've been thinkign about. I'd love to see furs from farther east join in but I'm not sure how or where to start. I suppose anyone's best bet is to hitch a ride to New York and hope for the best. In your case 1pm would, unfortunatly, mean that you'd probably be missed. I absolutly hate the idea of having to leave anyone behind but it happens. You miss the train it doesn't come back around to get you; sorry if that sounds synical.
With that said I HIGHLY RECCOMEND that if you're a passenger or driver you have a backup plan. Don't travel alone unless you know for sure you cna make it to wherever on time; especially passengers. For drivers, remember this is a convoy... it moves... kinda fast... if you are missed/passed by/late don't worry just drive and keep an eye out; we'll have frequent pitstops so people can catch up. I can say from personal experience that being alone in the middle of Pennsylvania on foot because you have no phone and missed your ride is... pretty freaking bad and scarry. There's Amtrak, SEPTA, NJ TRansit, Greyhound, airplane, or a good friend as options for a backup plan USE IT!
In a way if you can by any means hook up with a driver before the event starts do it. It's less detours for drivers along the way and less hassle.

noted, i'm trying to explore all opportunities for ride and room, cause nothing's worse than (besides not getting to the con) being stuck at one without a room. cause then you're basically not allowed to sleep due to hotel policies.
...yeah, but anyways i did make a new firend in the locale that might or might not be able to help out with room and ride. but, if all else fails, and it's a week beforehand, i can always catch a bus or train.

permalinkI'd rather take a train than a bus. I've ridden a bus before on a long, long haul and it was cramped quarters, even for a tour bus.

hah! that's awesome :3
but, yeah, i know buses, have to take one when i'm going home for vacations and whatnot. I've learned that the difference of $10 on two exact same bus tickets means about 4" more leg room.
'Sides, it takes 22-26 hours to get from where i am to the con via bus, not a happy ride

Greyhound, Boston to NYC varies between 4:30 and 7:10, with buses leaving most hours.
Greyhound, Boston to Philly varies between 6:59 and 10:06, with buses leaving every few hours.
Greyhound, Boston to Pittsburgh varies between 12:40 and 19:35, with buses leaving several times a day, across the entire day.
Amtrak, Boston to NYC varies between 3:25 and 4:10, across the morning.
Amtrak, Boston to Philly varies between 4:45 and 5:47,across the day.
Amtrak, Boston to Pittsburgh runs about 14 hours, and goes from Boston to NYC, and
NYC to Pittsburgh, starting incredibly early in the morning.

And if it's a comfort issue, amtrak is a definite improvement over the buses. I've actually gotten a good solid sleep on the train, and only once have i not been able to find--and take over--two adjacent seats for the duration of my ride. Forward space isn't much of a problem if you can stretch out sideways.

permalinkFor comfort, NYC to Pittsburgh, Amtrak has it all over the bus. It's more comfortable
than coach class on planes, too. Myself, I've STARTED with an empty seat next to
me, but at Philly, all the seats usually fill up until at least 30 minutes later.
Then again, last year, I went in July 4, and I LOVED the 1/2 empty train, which made
record time arriving, since it didn't have to yield right-of-way to freight trains
like they usually do.
Normally, you can incline the chair and pull out the footrest, so you can set up a
fairly good recline. I prefer sleeping as much of the trip as I can manage, which is
easier on the way back.

I checked out the fares and schedules for Amtrak, and while I would still have to find someplace to stay overnight in Boston before and after the con (have to catch a bus up to VT) the whole trip is still way cheaper than travel by air and while not as fun as carpooling, is a great alternative and safety net for travel.

well, the way it's set up, you aren't likely to find a way to get off one train and right on another and get all your traveling done in one day. Going to Boston the day before puts me somewhere I know, and enables me to get to Pittsburgh before it's too late in the day.

Will someone share a ride for me?

I expect you won't have too much trouble finding one.
If you do, however, i might suggest the train as an alternative; kage has in the past tried to bargain us a slight discount on amtrak, since it's such a popular mode of transport. From new york there's a train that goes direct to pittsburgh, no transfers necessary. A lot of furs take to AC, so you'd be in good company, and i don't recall it taking significantly longer that way than traveling by car.

permalinkWill be heading out this year either Wednesday morning or Thursday morning from Northern MA (25/26) and back likely Monday morning though afternoon is an option route takes me I-495, I-90, I-84, I-80. It looks like a 9 hour drive, heh, maybe need a nice conspicuous but subtle fursticker for back windows to identify.
I'll have space for 3-4 passengers depending on vehicle, gas sharing is welcome. If folks have suits and the like there should be plenty of space. And with respect for all passengers, the 6-2-1 rule is much appreciated! Last thing would be time, in order to be fair, I hate kittenhearding, think of it kinda like an airplane, try not to be late, we'll figure out times well in advance, don't ask for a six hour delay. I'll be happy to drop folks off at hotels but I usually park at 13th and smallman in the outdoor lot.

Not a fursuit, pack as light as able, anywhere is good, but I suggest Ayer or Littleton/495.
But yeah, any way I slice it, I have to be in Boston the night before, so I can get places easy enough once there. If you live close enough to one of the stops on the commuter rail, I might as well crash at your place before heading out ('s what I'll have to do with my relatives in Grafton anyways.)
Yeah, looking for a ride there and back,
Bonus: I can drive, and have driven across Mass before (and then up 93 to St. J) so as long as I know where I need to go, I can get there.

I will be departing the evening of Wednesday, 6/25 from Albany, NY. I plan to be a driver.
Car: 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser
Passeger: 3+driver, 4+driver if folks want to be cramped in the back seat (nobody does)
Trunk/Cargo: 3-5 duffel bags or 1 body in the trunk
Starting point: Albany, NY
Departure date: Evening, Wednesday 6/25
Return date: Afternoon, Sunday 6/29
Hotel: Marriott
If someone could please get in contact with me as to where I can join the convoy, that would be fantastic. Also, I am willing to drive as far as Boston in order to pick people up beforehand.

permalinkOkay, here's the rough plan, heading out Wednesday
mostly early, looking to have a total of 6 which is
fine for a big truck, cargo space is not a concern.
Route 495, 90, 84, 81, 80, down to the HWY 68 cut
across to Pitts.
Returning Monday morning sometime, 10-11 am.
Sofur, just to check, over 18 right?
Will be stopping every 2 hours or so for a bit just
to be kind to the passengers. If ya snack don't
make a mess, sucks to clean leather and carpet.
Convoy name? Do we have a name yet? Fuzzy Duck?
Could use channel 19 I suppose, perhaps if needed
due to traffic slide down to channel 15.
If there's a convoy sure a little fire drill could
be a way to meet new folks!

-Suggestions for (free) website providers or site builders?
-Road games?
-Convoy name? Fuzzy Duck came up as a suggestion but we're plannign on keeping it RoadCon. If you want to name your personal route that's fine, but for the general record it all falls under RoadCon.
-Car names/numbers? Panzier gets to be The Fuzzy Duck.
Communication channels: 19 is a possiblity but not all drivers (me) have radios. Cell phones are a bit more common and I'll probably be collecting #'s closer to the date.

Just a suggestion for you guys, you might want to try using FRS or GMRS handheld radios for your car-to-car communications. Even the cheapo models transmit far enough for convoy purposes, they're relatively cheap and easy to use, and it's unlikely that you'll encounter someone using the same channel, especially if you use "quiet codes" (aka PL tones or CTCSS). Plus, the people who have them can use 'em at the con, too, they're great for organizing groups for meals and other activities.

Just as an FYI, unless anyone posts on here saying that he or she needs a ride, I'm probably going to drop out of the convoy and go the route suggested by Google Maps, which'll take me west to Buffalo and then south to Pittsburgh, rather than south from Albany and then west through the northern part of PA.
This is primarily because I'm going to be leaving Wednesday evening no matter what, and I'm going to want to drive as expeditiously as possible, so having to every 2 hours or so just doesn't work for me.

Now I don't have a horse in this race; I'm just someone who likes to play around with Google Maps. I do note, though, that the I-90/I-79 route is 7 hours, 57 minutes/499 miles while the I-87/I-84/I-80 route is 8 hours, 3 minutes/475 miles. My recommendation is to keep an eye on road construction listings for both routes as the time gets closer and go with the one that has the least construction

Or if you're looking to save some money, I-90 is a toll road (the New York State Thruway) on much of its length in New York. The toll from Albany to Pennsylvania via Buffalo will probably be around $15. You can avoid most tolls by taking 88 to Binghamton, then 81 south into Pennsylvania to 80, west to 79 and south to Pittsburgh, but it may be somewhat longer. Gas is cheaper in Pennsylvania, though.

There's no need to guess - this is the Internet Age, after all! Taking a look at the Gas Price Temperature Map, you can see that gas prices in Pennsylvania are, on average, cheaper than upstate New York...though not by much, sadly.
