Ok....to the questions
I hope to volunteer,How soon can I do that? like before the con starts for set up? or during the con?
-I think you can just ask to volunteer at the registration desk and they will poitn you in the right direction, otherwise go under the left panel here and click VOLUNTEER INFO. http://www.anthrocon.org/volunteer
Is there motels or other hotels around the area?
-Tons, the OMNI is our secondary hotel and is AMAZING(Better than the westin if you ask me, just infinately smaller). Shop around on www.pittsburgh.us and you can find a map of the city, or go to various hotel/motel websites and look up on their site locator to find where in pittsburgh they are.
How soon does the con start in the morning?
-This party runs ALL
NIGHT
LONG! No official start date for social interactions, but I think the first events start around 8-9am.
How much money should I carry in pocket? -Give me a general range if you can-
Hotel is like.. 150 for shared room, or 3-400 if your rooming by yourself
Registration is 50-55 at the door
Parking is usually around 30 bucks
Food is about 40 bucks a day if you eat out or pick up
Dealers den? I spend about 60 bucks a day. One commission, a few comics and a print or two.
Can you direct me to a good place to get a tail made?
:3 I can make you one well in time for the convention, contact me or click on my website in my profile. Otherwise you can get one made from www.dragonsteel.org or www.mixedcandy.com.. theres a bunch of other places, too.
How long do events last into the night?
Officially, I think they cut off at 10pm-11pm. The unofficial events(Room parties, gallavants into the deep night) don't stop.
Shyness can dissipate in the con yes?
I should think so, I myself am not shy but there's a short forum post about it http://www.anthrocon.org/node/1786
Anyways I think you'll be just fine. Just walk up to people and say hello! 99.9% of us are friendly or indifferent so theres no harm in askin

I just need to interject that one of the things that makes Anthrocon affordable is that we ensure the hotels that they'll be booked full over our weekend. Whereas folks might save money by staying in cheaper (but far more remote) hotels, we really do encourage folks to stay in the offical convention hotels. Not only are they the closest to the action, but if too many people decide to save money by staying elsewhere...well, the convention goes away.

I understand that but its either like this for me....I go to the con flat broke or with some cash by staying somewhere else.
If I had the finances I would deefinently stay in the westin or the omni.
It not like I would be doing this over and over.
I understand your concern though

Consider that once there, you'll have to park your car; the cost of parking car at The Omni and leaving it untouched will counterbalance costs of driving in and parking anew each day. Also consider it's much easier to get roommate(s) for the Omni.

In Pittsburgh, there are ample opportunities to volunteer on Wednesday night, Thursday, and then throughout the con.
As for finances: The big expense categories are Hotel, Transportation, Food, and Dealer's Room. Hotel and Transportation you'll have to figure out yourself.
I personally budget $40 a day for the convention for food and beverages, which gives me room to have good food and good beverages. (Mmm. Port.) If you're driving, a well-stocked cooler with soda, juice, gatorade will help lower your costs, as will snack foods, energy bars, trail mix, and other non-perishable foodstuffs. Sufficient food can be done on $20 a day.
As it's your first con, you'll likely want to pick up an art badge of your character in the Dealer's Room at minimum; those run from $20-40. Other purchases you might make will add up. The Dealer's Room is where you will most consistently need greenbacks, as well; Most other transactions can usually be credit-carded, but only about 10% of the Dealer's room will take a credit card payment.

Actually, Gideon sells badges for a dollar.
He does them on index cards in about 20 seconds. But they are wildly popular. He sells hundreds of them every year.

Very true! I have two of them, and have purchased them for others- those are very fun. They're excellent for the price!
I shall addend and clarify: $20-40 is the typical price for a fully-colored art badge with a holder from a typical Dealer's room artist.

If you're comfortable doing it, this is almost certainly your cheapest option by far.
Last time i attended, i caught a ride up, shared a king room with 3 other people (they got the bed, i got the floor) and paid a little over a hundred for the entire hotel stay plus a twenty to help defray gas and parking costs. you'd be hard pressed to find even the cheapest, grungiest hotel for four nights for less.

I have no problem sharing a room with others.
Its not like Ive never done it before.
(I mean I did have to share a room, shower, and everything else with about....50-60 other guys during bootcamp >.< ugh)
I like sleeping on the floor anyway
I dont care if that room is chocked full.
As long as I have a place to sleep and shower.

--Volunteering: I think you can click a link to have yourself put on an advance list of folks who'd like to volunteer, but this link has most of the pertinent info.
In terms of advance volunteering, i can think of two instances off the top of my head. One is that kage has, the past couple of years at least, asked if some folks might stop by before the con to help load the truck before it leaves for pittsburgh; there's also unloading that happens in pittsburgh, but since you're a lot closer to philadelphia...I have no idea where you are in delaware, so i don't know if that's a viable option for you.
The other option is that the registration and art show gangs often need folks to help with assembling reg packets, folding and sorting t-shirts, and setting up the art show space for the artists. For the reg stuff, i think you just have to show up, though you could always email the registration staff and ask. For art show setup, email petercat and ask him if he'd mind putting you on his advance list of volunteers for setup, so you can get past the dorsai. He probably hasn't started putting that list together yet--it's still pretty early--but again, it never hurts to ask.
For volunteering during the con, it's mostly just a matter of sticking your nose in at con ops when they've put out the bat signal and saying the magic words: "How can i be helpful?" They love it when people say that. *grins*
--Hotels and motels: Oh, my yes, there are lots. To help out the con, it's a good idea to start with the official ones, tho, namely the westin (which is full, unless someone lets you room with them) and the omni. The omni is a little farther, but really it's a nice easy walk and awfully hard to get lost.
Watch the room share board, if you're looking to room with someone; we're still at low tide right now, but things'll start to really pick up in the next few months.
--Schedule: I don't think any official events start before 9ish, generally. They want to give the staff a chance to wake up, make themselves presentable, and eat something. I could be wrong, of course. At night, almost all of the events and public rooms wind down around 11 or midnight. I can't remember if the dance goes until midnight or 1, but it's the last piece of scheduling to end every night. At least i think so.
--Moolah: I've generally been fine with 60 or 80 on my person, but then i tend to be pretty frugal. The best way i can suggest to figure it is estimate a rough amount for three meals--and make at least one a proper sit-down meal, just because most people want one and you may end up going out with friends--then add about 40, maybe a little more if you're expecting to shop a lot, that's just in case something tickles your fancy. If you're staying in the omni, you probably won't want to walk back there in the middle of the day for more money if you can help it, so figure that in. The total is about how much money you'll want to have on you each day. And make some of it in small bills--dealers love that. *grin*
--Shyness: I am normally an intensely shy person. If that didn't dissipate at least some during the con, i wouldn't keep coming back. I'm still an intensely shy person, and i can still get overwhelmed and nervous around the crowds, but i have my familiar faces, and folks have always been very welcoming to me. I always get sucked into totally random conversations while waiting in the registration line.
Volunteering helps a lot with the shyness, too. *smiles*
Whew, that's a lot! Hope that helps.

permalinkPennsylvania is a very long state and Pittsburgh is a good five or more hours drive at about 300 miles west of Philadelphia.
Volunteering is a good way to meet people so that shyness does dissipate.
As for cash ---it depends on what you plan to spend it on. There is a nice dealer's room, the artists alley and art show and you can spend quite a bit in these if you want. Then there's food. When planning for food I figure about $30.00/day but you can get by on less than that --especially if you bring bread and peanut butter, MRE's, etc.

Ooh....I still remember the MRE's in Boot camp
They taste really freakin good.
*Drools a bit*
Oh...Right...
The trip wont be a problem for me.
5,6,7,8 hours...Who cares..As long as I make it safely

The Omni is too blocks away. It's a luxury hotel.
The convention rate is cheaper than you'd expect.
Last year's schedule is here: http://www.anthrocon.org/schedule
The Pocket Reader PDF is the schedule grid.
Depends on how cheap you eat.
Not counting travel expenses and hotels, the next expense is food.
If you eat cheap, allow $25 per day, which should cover it with room to spare.
After that is "whatever you spend in the Dealer's Room."
You can post here and ask:http://www.anthrocon.org/forum/fursuit
or buy one at the con,
or do like I do, and not get one.
There's other options, most of which people will outline on the fursuit construction
forum.
I direct you back to the Pocket Reader schedule.
We discussed this in this thread:
