Hey there guys, this is Keira. I’m quite new to the furry fandom and I just have a few questions and whatnot to ask anyone who is willing to fill me in.
I come from the anime fandom; I’m an avid anime con attendee, and I’ve been cosplaying for several years. I strayed into the furry fandom while looking for instructions on how to construct a fursuit for a fox cosplay (the Kyuubi no Kitsune, if anyone knows what I’m talking about).
I gotta say I’ve fallen in love. I’m a huge Disney fan, and I love the furry-cartoony art style. I’ve watched a few Anthrocon videos on youtube and I am so excited to enter this fandom.
But I’m kind of stuck. My parents hardly approve of my cosplaying fascination, and I doubt they’re going to warm up to fursuiting, either. But the good news is, college is only a few months away! Once I’m out of the house, I’m free to do whatever. So with hat problem solved comes another problem; where are fursuit cons? I know there are more than just Anthrocon, and I’m wondering if there are any closer to wear I live and where I’ll be going to college (Indiana).
Also, I was wondering about digitigrade stilts. Are they common at fursuit cons? I’m making a pair for my Kyuubi cosplay, and I was wondering if I should bother putting them into my first fursuit for Anthrocon or not?

Midwest Furfest is held every November in the Chicago area. Their website is at http://www.furfest.org/

permalinkMidwest Furfest was the first furry con I found, but they're moving to Alaska, which in my mind kind of makes the "midwest" in their name a bit pointles...
And I'm leaning more towards going without the digitgrade stilts because for Anthrocon I just want to be able to walk around easily...I'll just digigrade them with pads, I guess?
And I have another question. I saw some videos from Anthrocon last year about a small group of "protesters". Do many people really give fursuiters flack when you're at the con?

Uh, no. They'll be at the Westin North Shore in Chicago next year. I know. I have pictures.
Of course not. In fact, our Standards of Conduct prohibit that sort of harassment. These folks, however, were standing across the street, which is essentially public property, and engaging in a peaceful protest. It is their legal right to do so. In turn, it is our legal right to question their obsession with furries, for folks who say they are not furry.

It is also our legal right to laugh at them for standing out in the rain while we're having fun indoors.
I'm curious, though. Where in the world did you get the idea that they are moving to Alaska? I've heard some wild rumors in my day, but that's got to be one of the wildest. Also not in the slightest bit true.

{blinkblink} We are? Aw heck, the airfares are going to ruin me!
Actually, the theme of Midwest FurFest is "North to Alaska", but as Giza noted, we're staying right in the Chicago area!

Ah! That explains it!
Furry conventions like to have a different theme each year. Anthrocon has had such themes as "Furries in Flight," "Invention," and this year's theme of "It's a Jungle Out There!"
Furfest has chosen "North to Alaska" as their theme this year. Expect the fursuit population to be very husky-intensive.

Keep in mind most cons are fursuit-friendly. And I've seen a few digitgrade suits--i think they look pretty nifty! I didn't know there were stilts for that kind of thing.
I'd say perhaps, keep an open option--I've heard AC involves a lot of walking, and I don't know how comfortable those things are, having no experience with them...

permalinkMost of the midwest general SF cons have been getting their fair share of fursuiters these days.. ConFusion and ConClave near Detroit, Windycon, Duckon, Capricon near Chicago, Inconjuction in Indianapolis and more.
People love a good costume, regaurdless of theme.

where are fursuit cons?
Juuust to clear up a potential misconception, there's really no 'fursuit cons'. It's furry cons. In the same way that anime cons have cosplay, furry cons have fursuits and fursuit events, but there's a lot more than that. 10-15% of attendees have a fursuit, and another 10% will have ears or tail or such.
That said, we know the costuming is a big draw.
Midwest FurFest in Chicago and Morphicon in Ohio will be closest to you in Indiana; other cons can be seen at http://greenreaper.co.uk/wikifur/ConventionMap.html; http://furry.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_conventions_by_attendance has a list of other cons.

permalinkHahaha, wow, I can’t say I don’t feel a bit silly. I wasn’t aware of themes, thanks for clearing that up ^^;
Also, I didn’t mean to stereotype furry cons by calling them fursuit cons. What I mean is furry cons that are fursuit friendly. Sorry about that ^^;
And I don’t know if ‘stilts’ is quite the word I’m looking for. What I mean by that is what these people have made here; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JeJ1LimPAk.utube. I’ve seen some other kinds like that on youtube, as well. A friend and I have already started building them for our anime cosplay costumes, but I wasn’t sure if they common at furry cons or not.

All furry cons are fursuit friendly. I can't think of any that aren't. Fursuiters are one of the most prominent features of any furry convention.

The link works better as http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JeJ1LimPAk , by the by. (Nice to see the construction of such! I've seen a few like that about, including Cordite's horse costume.) And quite all right, I understood. We just like to keep confusion to a minimum, especially as furry=fursuit is a mild media myth.
As Kage said, every furry con is fursuit friendly, and we have fursuit panels, the Fursuit parade and masquerade, etc. Most other furry cons have similar events.

Hmmm... I came from the same idea... I've been going to anime cons for years and I wanted to make a better wolf costume - and I saw a very nice 4 legged wolf suit at Katsucon about 5 years ago. Sadly I didn't have a camera with me and I haven't seen the suit since then. But that got me started looking around on how to make a wolf fursuit.
I looked into this furry stuff and hooked up with some costumers and started collecting ideas. I've tried making 2 non-4 legged fursuits so far... they didn't turn out as well as I had hoped, but I'm still attempting to make another try at it this year.
As for Digitgrade fursuits - there's not too many of those, and ones with stilts are extremely rare, I've been to 6 furry cons now - and have only seen 2-3 fursuits with stilts built in. The real problem is making them work without hurting/injuring your feet or legs especially if you want a digit-grade look.
Yay Anime! Anime cons still take precedence over furry cons for me. Anthrocon is the largest furry convention, but it's quite small compared to most anime cons. (Katsucon & Otakon)
I hope you have fun! See ya at Anthrocon!

If you are willing to travel in April, consider Costume Continuum in San Jose:

As to digitigrade stilts, I have seen only a couple of suits featuring them (and they are technically stilts, but not what we usually think of when someone says "stilts"), but they involve some risk of injury, particularly if walked on for a protracted period of time.
The best 4-legged wolf costume that I have seen was made and worn by Lance Ikegawa, and it was for an Anime Convention somewhere, within the past year.

permalinkThere are more than a few furry cons spread throughout the world and a few more are popping up everyday. Some of these are small gatherings of around 50-100 people and some are monsterous.. like Anthrocon!
I have been in the fandom for around 16 years ... yikes.. that long?
If you have any specific questions you want answered please go ahead and ask. Would be glad to share any information!
Oh and the cons I go to are two, Anthrocon and Further Confusion. Anthrocon because it's a great convention , it's massive and there's alot of stuff to do and see and it's on the East Coast (originally from NY) and Further Confusion.. well.. it's big and it's like not too far from where I live.
