How close is the Omni Hotel to wherever the Greyhound buses arrive in Pittsburgh? I'm trying to get here as cheaply as possible this year and will probably come by Bus or by Train.

Pittsburgh is served by Greyhound (+1 412 392-6513 or +1 800-231-2222 for routes and schedules) which maintains a station at 11th and Liberty, Downtown. Currently, the Greyhound station is undergoing maintenance; the temporary station is at 990 2nd Avenue. Pittsburgh is also served Megabus (1 877 GO2-MEGA) twice daily from Chicago via Toledo and Cleveland.

Go to maps.google.com

Plug in "990 2nd Ave, pittsburgh, PA"

Click on "Satellite"

Zoom to the third-closest image level.

The building right below the pointer with all the busses is the Greyhound terminal (a temporary one, while they're rebuilding the main one.)

Click on "Directions from Here."

Key in "530 William Penn Place, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15219"

You'll see that it's about 0.8 miles.

But if you click on the blue lines on the map you'll get a street view, and you'll see that it's highly ill-advised to try to walk.

Amtrak's station is almost literally across the street from the Westin. (I could see it from my hotel window: I had to look almost straight down.) From Philly, it's about seven hours to get there by train, if memory serves.

(Edited to remove information posted by Kage while I was slowly typing this post...)

Ah, another bus-travelling furre. ^^ Indeed, last year I flew into Pittsburgh, and NEVER ran into a problem. But now, I am travelling with a friend as I too look to save a bit of cash. We're coming in on the Greyhound bus lines ourselves, though the 18 hours of non-stop midnight ride is probably going to wear us out. x.x Or.... might even get us that more excited for AC. Eye-wink

Amtrak is a very pleasant trip to the convention, on the Pennsylvanian line
(which is the line that passes through Philly to end at Pittsburgh.)
It's a bit faster than the bus, and it ends about 2 blocks from the Westin.
(It is shorter to reach the Westin's front desk than to find a taxicab.)

That having been said, there's 1 train per day, so missing it means you're
stuck. And if you are watching your money, the bus is usually about 1/2
the price of the train, and even taking a taxi to the hotel from the
bus depot doesn't make up the difference. So, it's really up to the
passenger. (The bus is also cheapest when tickets are bought more
than 14 days before the date of use, with some discount if less than
2 weeks but more than 7 days.)

I LOVE to take the train to AnthroCon. Of course, I take the Pennsylvanian
where it begins (NYC Penn Station), and ride from the first stop to the
last stop. (It's physically possible for me to take Greyhound that far,
but I really prefer the train to that, and even prefer it over a much
faster plane.)

Amtrak is going to cost me $90 and gets into Pittsburgh later than I really want. Taking the Bus will cost me $75 round trip, but don't quote me on that. Flying out here is looking like it will cost me $145 round trip. But I need to go back and check my figures on that.

You have the price correct.

*checks* About $76 including fees, if bought more than 14 days before the trip.
Unless the price goes up.

I plan on buying tickets at least a full month in advance.
