Dealer's room questions?

PapayaKitty's picture

I've never been to AC before, but I would like to be a dealer since I'm really into artwork and selling things I do. I've got a few questions though...

I want to sell prints, but I don't know how many prints should be made of various pictures-- can someone give me any sort of estimate how many prints the average artist sells over the con? I know it's hard to really put numbers on it, but I'd like SOME sort of idea of about how many things to print, if possible!

I also have another question-- I know that at a lot of cons, people sell fan art at their tables and whatnot. I want to know, is this out of bounds at AC? I mean, if it falls into furry, of course. But I just want to know if I have to stick strictly to my original works.

Thanks!

Hrmmm...i'm not sure we have any data at all on how many prints an artist sells on average. The dealer's room folksmay have some data on this, but i have a sneaking suspicion that they don't. Any veteran dealers want to weigh in?

As for the fan art, i believe AC's standard policy is that you can sell art of someone else's character if you have the creator's permission; otherwise i'm afraid they have to treat it as copyright infringement. :=8( Sorry. Wish i could say otherwise.

Welcome to the herd.

First, you are getting very short on time if you hope to get an actual dealer's table, you might want to consider starting with the Artist's Alley.

Second, most of the "big name" artist will bring 6 to 12 copies of each print, perhaps 15 if from experience they think it might be a hot seller. And most will try and get 12 to 15 new images done for con like AC, and of course stock older good sellers, probably two to three dozen different images.

As to selling other people's characters, probably best to avoid such whenever possible. If you're doing fan art of existing comic and cartoon characters, you're on shaky ground. Even an homage fan boy piece is technically a violation of copyright, but most studios and companies allow for a little wiggle room, just as long as it isn't brought to their attention.

If you're talking doing drawings based on other furry artist's work, again, best to avoid it also. (( Try and sell Chester drawings and you'll be LOOOMED over by a large and angry Glen, and NO ONE wants that. ))

Have a great time at the con, enjoy peddling your art.

Chester himself was also at Anthrocon last year, but he isn't so good at looming.

Since prints are pretty cheap, I'd shoot for 4-5 prints per picture, 8 tops if you think one will sell particularily well. Also, try the artist's alley, if you can't get a table! The 'alley is generally where people go to buy their con-art(From non known artists), conbadges and little things like bookmarks and such.

Funny seeing you here!

You actually have yourself a Dealer's Room Table all to yourself, assigned and such, but we need to discuss a few issues, but...your email address is bouncing.

I don't have it in front of me (and I would -highly- suggest not posting it here), so I can't tell you what I have on the application you filed.

If you could shoot a message to , we'd be most most most grateful.
