Dealer's Room Update!
|
Hey kids! (Hey Dr. Foxish!) It's the end of the first month of 2008, and with it comes some news from your loyal staffers in the Dealer's Room! Now we've seen from a lot of dealers so far--over one hundred and thirty dealers and assistants have already applied for our space, and we've processed the whole lot in-hand, covering applications with postmarks up to about January 17th. Notifications for about a dozen more dealerships should go out this weekend. With that influx of applicants comes the spectre of the sell-out. Now we're nowhere near completely flooding the room, so don't those of you out there who sent your apps after January 17 or who haven't sent them yet think you're up the creek just yet. However... Wall Space is completely sold out. This does not mean it's impossible to get these amenities. We have a miniscule number of powered tables remaining, but the number is so small that they will be gone in a flash during the next wave of processing. There is no guarantee you'll get one, even if your app was on its way to is just after January 17. Any dealers still applying should still indicate what they'd like, and pay the additional feature premiums; we'll most definitely consider any requests and offer up free tables as they become available on a first-come-first-serve basis. Cancellations are inevitable throughout the next several months, and things will come open. About half of the remaining tables are still open for dealers, with doubles and triples ripe for the choosing. If you've got any questions, as usual, please shoot a mailing over to and we'll do our very best to help you out asap! |

Damn! That many applicants already?!
I'm so glad I didn't wait another day when I sent my application! I might just have squeaked in.
I'm going to have to sit out by the post office next year the very instant it opens on the first day of application post-marking acceptance to be sure I get a space!

permalink"Powered Tables are virtually sold out."
Is a powered table not just a regular table with a power cord and power strip? If dealers are paying for it why not just get more?
I admit I don't know how the whole process works but I have trouble understanding why there would be a limit to the amount of available power, unless you guys are actually losing money on the deal.

Once again, the sentence that begins "why don't you just..." makes me scream. If it was so simple a matter, we would do it. But it was an honest question, I suppose, so here is the answer.
We no longer have the luxury of simply adding one more plug. Every single plug that is supplied costs us a heap of money. We charge dealers $30 for power; that is less than half of what it costs us to provide it. That is because we can't just shove a plug into an outlet in a union-controlled exhibit hall. An electrician must connect an outlet to the power sources in the floor. Electricians don't come cheap, and we pay them both by the hour and by the outlet.
And that is for tables that are situated very close to the floor-level power drops. The other tables, because of the way we are laid out, would require cables to be run from the power drops across the aisle where people are traveling, which would require carpenters to lay down those speedbump-things to protect the cords. Carpenters also cost a lot, and there's a surcharge for the excess cable, and...we're beginning to get into the realm of "prohibitively expensive."
Dealers are still welcome to pay for power on their own at "non-powered" tables. They may, however, suffer sticker-shock when we tell them what it would cost to have a single outlet wired in.

permalinkClumsy people like me who manage to trip over "do not trip" signs appreciate the lack of speedbumps in the dealer's room.
