2,849 attendees attended AnthroCon 2007
AC doesn't really keep a record as to the number of fuisuters/fursuits present, except for the number of those who participated in the parade.
I believe it was over 350 fursuits, however I am not sure.
I should point out that it is not the size of a con that is important, its how much fun you have at it.

Anthrocon had 2,849 attendees and 353 fursuits in the fursuit parade in 2007. So FC, congratulations on having the largest fursuit parade!
..but don't expect it to last.

Now now, who knows what the future may hold?
Even so, I'm going to be sure to order enough water bottles this year. Last year I remember thinking, "300 ought to be plenty."

Uncle Kagé, not to be a nit-picker, but is it possible to have ice in the bottled water? Some were looking to have iced water (though I don't recommend it personally for the possibility of a system shock), but the sun shining through the windows heated up the water.
Still... the bottles were a nice touch. I didn't keep my bottle... shame, I should have. o_o;;

I second this! Warm water really sucks.
I know it's been mentioned in the past, just thought I'd say it again to keep it in the front of folks' minds.

I'd actually like to point out something that seems to get lost in all the hullabulloo surrounding the "numbers".
While it pleases me (and I'm sure Yappy) to no end that the numbers in the fursuit parade keep going up, I'd like to point out WHY it makes me happy. It's not that any one convention has the largest number of fursuits in it's parade.
The reason it makes me happy is because it means more people are discovering and enjoying fursuiting! It's something I've enjoyed for many years and it makes me incredibly happy to see others finding out why I think it's so much fun!
Perhaps AC will breach a new number of participants in the parade this year. That'd be wonderful. But nothing really tops hearing others tell me "You know, I never imagined being in fursuit could be that much fun. It's like a whole other side of me that I've wanted to express for a long long time." That my friends is where the real focus has been...and should always be.

Alot are the same people going to each con, more are getting suits, or some have many suits and let their friends wear them in the parade.

But if a person is enjoying themselves, doesn't that keep the spirit alive? I myself loaned a really close friend a fursuit for both MFF and FC. He's having his own suit built, but in the meantime he's having a ball with the one I don't regularly wear. He wore it in the FC parade...and I was happy he did. He also did so in the MFF parade. (And no..I don't lend my suits out to just anyone...this is a special situation for a really good friend.)
It wasn't about increasing a number. It was about letting a friend have an absolute blast for a weekend. That's all I really see as the issue. To some, yes they may focus on a number...but the only number I was worried about...was the 1 person who had a better con experience because he had an opportunity to fursuit. Perhaps that's a bit altruistic, but in the end...having fun and friends is why I'm in the fandom to start with. And it's where I'd prefer to see the focus remain.

permalinkYes fursuiting is quite fun. It isn't for everyone of course, but the more people that partake in it, the better it is. Fursuiters are cute and funny by themselves, but when they get into groups they get into all sorts of interesting situations they couldn't do alone (like a lot of husky fursuiters tugging along a Radio Flyer cart with a little girl in it at this past FC).
Therefore, the more fursuiters there are, the more fun they have interacting with each other and the audience, and the more fun and laughs the audience has.
However I think the biggest obstacle is the resources it takes to fursuit in the first place. Unless you intend to build it yourself, you generally have to commission an artist to draw up a design sheet, then commission someone to actually build it based on the concept drawing (which is the biggest obstacle by far).
But even past that, maintaining these suits can be a problem, during the cons and between cons too. Transportation is an issue, compounded manyfold if you're flying or in any other situation where you'll be separated from your luggage. Not to mention that prepping yourself for a quick run of suiting, and washing up/cooling down/cleaning the suit afterwards also takes a large chunk of time during the con.
...and despite all that it is SO worth it! There is nothing to describe the incredible liberation of spirit that happens when you don a costume. When you put that mask on, you suddenly feel like doing a dozen cartwheels down the hall. The world is now your stage, and every passerby is a potential audience that you can make smile with a few quick gestures and a hug.
But given what I listed, I think the best way to start is to borrow a friend's suit for a short period of time and see if this is something you really want to get into.
