This isn't really furry related so it'll probably be locked down very soon...

But it isn't bull. There's been a lot of fuss over here about it, articles in the newspapers and so forth. There was even a testimonial in the newspaper that a woman had her cell phone seized, all her contact info was copied, and during the hour and a half she was detained her daughter tried to call her about 15 times. When she received the phone back, it had no records of any calls, missed or not. It wasn't until she finally got in touch with said daughter that she realized they had deleted that data.

The debate is on, apparently, as to whether it's legal to conduct these searches. That aside, I'm damned sure it's illegal to delete any data like that. Whether it be a cell phone or a laptop, that's destruction of information that may or may not be very important to you.

No. Just moved to the off-topic forum.

It has a vague relation to our event, since it is of interest to many of our attendees who will be traveling. I suspect, however, that such fears have been greatly overblown. In my many years I have learned that what is reported in the news is usually not the whole story. Naturally the people who tell such tales will claim that "there was absolutely no reason for the person to search me," whereas in reality there may well have been ample reason; and since I know human nature, I suspect that these "innocent" people know quite well what the reason is but aren't willing to admit it, perhaps even to themselves.

With the thousands of travelers who pass through Passport Control every day, I cannot imagine Customs inspectors having either the time or the energy to randomly pick a person and rifle through his laptop for the hell of it. They're busy enough as it is. To have them do such a thing without any cause simply does not make sense, and as Judge Judy says, "If it doesn't make sense it probably isn't true."

Thats why my entire computer (well, the file system) is encrypted with a VERY high bit encryption. Lets see them get into that. Laughing out loud

I'm sure they can't get into that.

However, another legal battle being fought right now is whether they can order you to decrypt/enter your password for them, with the consequence of non-cooperation being jail time or deportation.

Thanks Giza!

The article I read was in a local newspaper that scratched the surface of that issue, so I don't think I would have been able to produce a link for it.
